Episode Description

Some days you can't tell if you're burnt out or just excited. But when it's real burnout, you know.

When you own the business, the work never stops. There's always one more email, one more call, one more thing.

Today I'm sharing tools I've taught for about 20 years and just taught my inner circle again this week. Default behaviors that take the thinking out of your day. Rock-solid boundaries that cut the drama. And one shift that changed how I run my whole business. Listen in and get your energy back.

Featured Story

Years ago I did morning radio. I'd get to the station around 5:15, go on the air at six, and be off at ten. Four hours on. Seven hours in the building, tops.

When I walked out, I turned it off. I was done.

Then I became an entrepreneur and did what everybody does. I worked from the moment I got out of bed until I fell asleep, then dreamed about it all night and woke up exhausted.

So I went back to what radio taught me. Now I put on my hat, grab my coffee, and work my shift. I run this whole business on about 20 hours a week, and it starts with one decision.

Important Points

  • Set default behaviors for your day, your meals, and your business so you stop burning energy on the same decisions.

  • Build rock-solid boundaries and be ruthless about them, because without them the drama of every bad day wins out.

  • Work your business like a shift. Show up, do the work, then shut the door and walk away, even from a home office.

Memorable Quotes

  • Everything is a pattern. Your business is a pattern. Your money's a pattern. You're a pattern. You should live in one.

  • When you can default to a certain response, you've been trained. The training kicks in, and you have no emergency.

  • I walk in, put my hat on, grab my cup of coffee, and get to work. As soon as I'm done, I shut the door and leave.

Scott's Three-Step Approach

  • Notice the default behaviors you already have, and get yourself back into the daily rhythm that works best for you.

  • Lock in rock-solid boundaries around that rhythm, and plan your responses so surprises don't knock you down.

  • Treat your work as a shift with a clear start and finish, then walk out the door and leave it there for the day.
