Episode Description
Everybody wants to be a rock star. Or do they? Some people only sing lead. Others are happy playing bass in the back and stepping up when somebody hands them the mic.
When my son was in his twenties, he was sure he’d be the rock star. I asked him one question that stopped him cold.
Today I share that question and why I ask every client some version of it by the second or third call. There’s no wrong answer here. The only mistake is not being honest with yourself about which one you really are.
Featured Story
When my son Austin was in his early twenties, he was bound and determined to be a rock star. He headed to Los Angeles, played guitar, sang, cut CDs, and worked the open mic nights at the Whisky a Go Go.
He was good. He just wasn’t that good.
So I asked him, what happens when you become a member of the band instead? He didn’t know what to do with that. Playing any other role had never crossed his mind. He told me he wouldn’t be happy with that.
He kept going anyway, and he found his stage somewhere I never saw coming.
Important Points
Decide early whether you want to lead from the front or play in the band, because each path carries its own price.
Some people only sing lead, and they’re special once they commit. Most people are happiest in the ensemble.
Taking a job isn’t failure if the business side drains you. Be honest about which rock star path fits your life.
Memorable Quotes
There’s a price to pay, and there always is. The lead singer gets one spot, and sometimes they sit on the bench.
It’s okay either way, but you’ve got to be honest about what you are: the rock star or a member of the backup band.
Some only sing lead. They’re special, but they’re only special once they finally say that’s all I do.
Scott’s Three-Step Approach
Ask yourself whether you want to lead from the front or play in the band, and answer honestly, not how you wish.
Weigh the price each role carries, like the ups and downs of owning a business versus a steady paycheck and time off.
Commit to the role that fits you, then build your plan around it so you stop chasing a spot you don’t really want.
