Is anybody out there a fan of the show “Work Out” on Bravo? I watched the first season, and I’m interested mainly because of the setting...it’s fun to get a glimpse into the world of an elite Beverly Hills fitness facility (even through the distorted lens of reality TV). So maybe we’ll get caught up in the drama of it all and enjoy a dishy discussion here!

The show premieres on Tuesday March 20, check out the link for more information:

(don’t worry if you miss the premiere, it repeats MANY times throughout the week)

Or: if you have iTunes, follow this link for a free download of the season premiere:

I hadn’t even heard of this show until I started watching “Top Design"… it looks really interesting though, so I’ll be recording it tonight to watch it later. smile

Workout is one of my guilty pleasures.  I can’t believe Jackie is back with Mimi - she (Mimi) is such a spoiled brat.  In fact most of the cast are spoiled brats.  I like watching the workout parts more than the drama parts, but I like the drama parts too…

Yeah, it’s a guilty pleasure here, too. I could never understand, through all of the first season, why Jackie was so powerless around Mimi. She’s obviously a smart, self-possessed woman in the business world, but I guess love is another story. As Jackie said in the episode, Mimi is her addiction. But really, when they’re arguing they’re not anywhere close to being on the same page! And they pretty much constantly argue (if the show is to be believed). The scene with the therapist at the end was quite telling, there were some real moments there. I don’t think Jackie is particularly good at mugging for the camera (which I like) so when you see emotions surface for her, it’s real. Actually, it looks like Mimi might not be in this season very much, based on the looks of the previews and the outcome of this premiere episode…

That scene where Jackie’s poolside conversation with her mother (from last season) was shown on the big screen at the gala benefit must have been surreal. Something so private, and yet made so public, and shown while she’s being filmed for a second season of the same show...how very meta!

The new venture Jackie is planning--it sounds like a fitness bootcamp/retreat or spa kind of deal--called Skylab sounds pretty cool. I’ve long fantasized about a kind of place like that, where people go to learn about fitness and get whipped into shape. It will be interesting to see how much of that development they share on the show (and does NASA have a copyright on the name? hehe).

I was shocked when that one guy who was trying to gain muscle reported he’s been eating 4,000 calories per day! I don’t think I’ve been able to ingest that much even on the biggest binge days. Perhaps close, but that’s really pushing it. I guess it’s not easy being a hard-gainer trying to pack on the pounds, he said it made him feel nauseous by the end of the day to be eating that much.

They were teasing Jesse the trainer about being “fat.”—I guess with a critical eye, I could say that he looked a little out of shape compared to his hardbody coworkers. But that’s a pretty specific high standard. Do you think a trainer really needs to have 5% bodyfat to be worth his/her salt? Personally, I think I would take into account a trainer’s body when deciding whether to trust their advice, but only up to a point. I’d also take into consideration their demeanor and apparent level of knowledge. I know that a lot of trainers follow some pretty intense routines and strange eating patterns that I wouldn’t want to emulate, so I might be more inclined to choose a more “average” looking trainer. I dunno...I don’t see myself hiring a trainer anytime soon anyway.

I’ve seen some clips of the show on youtube. I don’t get it. What’s the premise of the show?

As for eating 4k cals/day, I know a few guys that do this. Of course they are competitive bodybuilders.

When it comes to trainers, somebody that looks “in shape” is a way of advertising. Do they need to be 5% BF? No. They should, however at least look fit. A good friend of mine is a trainer. He is tall, muscular, and good looking. He looks like he knows what he is talking about, and fortunately for him, he does. Consequently, his business does quite well.

It’s basically a reality show following this woman named Jackie who started a gym in Beverly Hills. It’s not for information, it’s pure entertainment with the usual reality-TV tricks of playing up the dramatic moments.

Yeah, you’re right, image means a lot when it comes to being a trainer. In a way, they’re selling an idea, a hope for the future, and they have to look like they know how to get you there. Of course there’s more to it than looking the part, but if they don’t look the part they may not get very far or inspire much faith in clients.

Episode 202 - Well, thank goodness Jackie saw the light and broke up with Mimi. I’m not really surprised that she seemed to get over it quickly...that thing had gone on too long!

Anyway, the SkyLab test run sounds interesting, when they introduced the clients and gave a little background information on each one. I hope they continue to follow this storyline, I wish they would give it more time than the interpersonal drama, which is pretty darn childish on this show, in this episode in particular.

The bodyfat testing was interesting. I’ve long known about hydrostatic testing as the most accurate method, but I didn’t have a clear picture of what it looked like to get tested. It was funny to see the trainers get nervous about having their results known--I guess they hold themselves to some pretty high standards--except for Jesse, whose bodyfat reading was darn near my own! I wonder if the show will cover that any further, to see if he buckles down and gets back in shape. He was in better shape last season; maybe his pseudo-celebrity fame following that season led to him putting on some party pounds.

Jesse claimed that “nobody parties harder than trainers” because they focus so much on health, food, and fitness all week long that supposedly they’re just raring to party on the weekends. That’s his theory, anyway.

As for Jesse being fat, well you know what, the best trainers I have ever had weren’t Rock Hard Specimens,, they were real people who overcame their history with the budge.  Part of the success of being a Great trainer is being able to relate to your clients...which for the most part, are people trying to work off their tails.  Literally.  I don’t know if I’d want to work out at Jackie’s gym.....

Hmmm...what to say about this show...I’m still watching it, I just caught up on the last two episodes. They aren’t spending a whole lot of time on the actual training aspect of things, but there’s been a lot of drama. Jackie is acting like she’s 14 when it comes to her dating practices (at least she admits that, but it’s kind of painful to watch). I suppose being with Mimi for so long didn’t do much to mature her dating skills.

It’s kind of odd how they can pair all this childish drama with the very serious situation with Doug’s health. It has already been reported that he has passed away, (this season was dedicated to his memory) and I wonder if that will be depicted on the show, and how. They’ve only gotten to the point where he’s in a drug-induced coma by the end of this latest episode. It was eerie that he said this was the last birthday he would be celebrating (both of his parents died before reaching their mid-40’s)...and he was right. So sad.

Holy moly, Doug died????  Oh my gosh, I just started watching (in part due to this thread) but you couldn’t help but like the guy.  I tell ya, my husband LOVES the show, it is his ticket to watch good looking ladies make out....*I roll my eyes* I do agree, from what I have seen, Jackie is a bit immature in her dating-but really, at one point we all were.

True, most of us have had our awkward adventures in dating (I probably still have some in my future, LOL). Anyway, your husband must have LOVED these latest episodes, with all the kissing going on, oh my goodness. And yeah, Doug was definitely a likable guy!

It was definitely heartbreaking to hear Doug sounding fearful about his upcoming birthday, talk about his parents’ early deaths, all the while knowing he was already gone.

I thought it was interesting that Jesse had the lowest body fat percentage.  I’ve seen a lot of big, not-ripped guys like him that I kind of assumed were a little on the heavy side.  But it looks like some people just carry all their fat cells right on the surface.  Or in his case, in that baby face.

...but, um, he had the highest bodyfat percentage! Or are you thinking of “Peeler?” He had the lowest percentage. Both he and Jesse have kind of baby faces though, heh. When they had their beach boot camp on the first episode, it was apparent that Peeler was in shape and Jesse was a wee bit pudgy..

You’re right.  I meant Brian Peeler.  Not Jesse.

I’m glad I’m not the only one watching this show.  I could do without the girl make-out sessions but I’m hooked on the people.  I’m sure a lot of guys are watching to see that.  I think it’s very inappropriate for Jackie to be dating an employee.  I wish the show had more working out going on than making out.  It would be great to actually learn something about fitness from these people.

Doug was my favorite and I’ve been glued to the TV waiting to hear what happens.  I’m so sad to hear he died.  I can’t believe it.  Did he die from an infection?  That’s weird.  There must be more to it.  It was sad and sweet to watch him training his old boyfriend.  Now I feel really bad for him.

Peeler is the one with the lowest body fat.  I like him too.  I think he actually gets the job done while everyone else is hanging out or flirting.  He’s nice to look at too.  I’d like to see more beefcake and less chick on chick stuff.  I’ll have to write in to the show.  “Dear Jackie, Could you please zoom in on some Peeler abs and glutes on the next episode?” smile

Yeah, while I have no problem with same-sex kissing on TV in general, it somehow bothered me that they really seemed to linger on the girl-girl makeout sessions, gratuitously. And yeah, it seems like there should be a clear line about Jackie dating an employee, but she’s ignoring it. I remember reading an article last year about the first season having perhaps “not enough drama,” so perhaps they were encouraged to make it more “soapy.” But I’m with you, Carrie, I find the actual training details interesting. I like Peeler too, it seems like he’s more of a straight-shooter and not quite so much of an “L.A. type,” if that makes sense. Unfortunately that makes him a bit of an odd man out in this crowd.

The scenes with Doug and his old boyfriend were poignant. I don’t know exactly what he died of, the news reports I read didn’t have that information. I wonder if the show will cover it (I’m one episode behind as of this writing). As for beefcakes, yeah Bravo must realize that their viewer base is composed primarily of women and gay men, right??
