If the purpose of the exercise is weight loss, what is best? A two hour power walk at heart rate 115, or an our of spinning at 154?
Fast or slow, that’s the question. I do both, by the way. But what´s best?

Working on your next set of after pictures I see.

What is best depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  The long slow burn, longer workouts at a lower heart rate are great for burning fat.  The muscles are receiving enough oxygen to maintain fat utilization for the entire workout.  This type of exercise is good for burning fat and for building endurance, but doesn’t provide much cardiovascular conditioning or contribute to increased strength.  Spinning at a higher heart rate is more intense and will help improve cardiovascular conditioning.  You also burn fat, but not as consistently through the workout since you may slip into an anaerobic zone where the muscles can’t burn fat effectively and need to break down carbohydrates and protein for energy.  It will take longer at the slower pace to burn the same number of calories, but those calories will be primarily fat.  Both workouts help boost metabolism, but the higher intensity workouts may give a little extra boost since the body needs to keep working during recovery.

Doing both is actually the best workout strategy.  You are spending time in the fat burning zone, and spending time improving your cardiovascular conditioning.  I say keep doing what you’re doing and the weight will continue to come off.  Remember with your exercise program, you will be adding muscle (heavier) while removing the fat.  As you get in better and better shape, your weight may not be the best indicator of overall fitness.

Great reply, Paula!
This one should everyone read! It is really clearifying. I do both, slow and fast, and the weight is coming off, as I have showed everyone at this forum in the before and after picture. But, I am wondering what’s my direction from here. More on the slow training (fat burning) og more on the fast stuff (cardio). I’ll figure it out… grin

I’ll echo Paula and say both, split about equally. Do you do weights? I’m sure you’ve said before, but I just can’t remember. And I prefer to think of them not as after pictures, but as the current pictures. We will never really have after shots.
