Hi all,

I was listening to some old “minutes” today when I heard Scott mention an “emergency food supply” he keeps around for when he gets hungry.  Almonds are in it, but what I want to know is “what ELSE is in it?”

I picked up a 150 g (5-6 oz) box of almonds this week, and I try to keep at least one piece of fresh fruit on me at all times, but I’d like to supplement that with some other stuff for when I’m out of my residence and yet hungry.  So, Scott (or anyone), what else do you keep around for those unexpected hunger pangs?

OK.  I’m going to get my shy wife Sheryl to help with this.  She’s been watching the site but I haven’t been able to get her to jump in.

Here’s a couple

I always keep sliced turkey breast and some low calorie wraps in the fridge.  A little honey mustard and I’ve got a quick 200 - 250 calorie meal really fast.

I keep Morning Star Veggie pattis.  2 minutes in the microwave and I’ve got another 200 calorie meal or snack.

Bananas are always on hand.  One is just enough to hold me while I prepare something.  Of course I have to count those calories.  Still, it works.

I have 4 places in town where I know I can get a salad quick and fast that I also like.  If in doubt, I know where to stop.

Subway all kinds of sandwhiches with low fat.  I get 1/2 a turkey sub, no cheese, honey mustard.  Under 300 calories.  I usually get some Baked Layes Chips.  I like them and with my body composition I need a few more calories per meal.

Applebees has the Weight Watchers meals.  I get Mango Talapia.

Chillis has the Giltless Chicken Pita.  less than 500 calories and very good.

Whew-

There are more - can’t think of them right now but my wife WILL be in on this one.  It’s important.

It would be *great* to get to know your other half Scott!

Now Julie - you are a student - yes? So it may be hard to keep things around as you don’t have access to a full kitchen?

Try Fruit Leather, low in cal and made from the real deal: http://www.stretchislandfruit.com/

Pre-packaged fruit cups. You’re spending a tad more for the packaging but the portibility is what you need the most

Quaker Apple Rice cakes but there are many other flavors http://www.quakeroats.com/qfb_OurBrands/BrandDetail.cfm?BrandID=12

As for meal replacement types:

Pria http://www.powerbar.com/Products/Pria/

Luna http://www.lunabar.com/index_main.cfm

Krave bars http://www.kelloggs.com/brand/krave/index.shtml

Go Lean Kashi: http://www.kashi.com/category3.aspx?SID=1&Category;_ID=59&

Marathon: http://www.snickersmarathon.com/home.asp

I know - a lot of bars - but when you’re a student without a fully functional kitchen - anything you can grab and go works smile

Hope this helps!

As usual - Carrie comes through again… sick and all!

We also tend to keep bars around.  Not so much for “Emergency Food” but more for times when like when I fly.  I don’t want too much to eat and I need something that I can easily grab while still keeping myself in the air.  It also keeps me from landing and running for a $100 Hamburger at the airport snackbar.  (That’s a $4.95 Hamburger plus the cost of the airplane rental per hour)

Hi Scott, hi Carrie.

Thanks to both of you for your ideas.  I don’t generally have problems with meals, it’s always the “between meals” that get me.  The almonds and fruit are working well, and I’ll try implementing some of your ideas as well.  As Carrie noted, I don’t have a fridge, so thanks for thinking of non-refridgerator (sp?) stuff!

TTFN,
Julie
