Heya Julie and everyone - what an awesome thread! Gratitude is something I don’t believe I can ever choose to feel too much of, and I love the idea of having somewhere to share my ‘grateful fors’… so here’s my introductory gratitudes…
1- I’m grateful for having found this forum thread, so I can share my blessings with other people who won’t think I’m weird, and so I can be inspired by their recognitions of their blessings
2- I’m grateful to discover Julie’s an SCA-nik, so when I first post about one of my exercise sessions being a 3-hour training session at Auckland Sword & Shield (a medieval weapons group who train with longswords, shields, daggers etc), there’ll be at least one person here who’ll know what I’m talking about :-D
3- I’m grateful for my job - getting paid to write is pretty much the fulfilment of a dream for me
4- I’m grateful that my job is within walking distance of my house, so I can build exercise into my day even if I *don’t* get to the gym
5- I’m grateful to have found the MTM community, and for the inspiration and accountability it’s going to provide me with
6- I’m grateful for the background to recognise that it really is about the choices I make, not about anything else
7- I’m grateful for my wonderful husband who’s so different from me, and who supports and complements me in all the areas I’m not strong in
8- I’m grateful for the rain that poured down pretty much the moment I finished my workout - I got totally drenched on the way home, which made that hot shower when I got home that much more wonderful on my skin
9- I’m grateful for recognising that I had a choice in how I saw getting drenched - and for noticing that the moment I stopped thinking of it as a bad thing and just let it be a thing, the rain suddenly felt quite delicious and sensual on my face - it’s only when I was resisting it that it felt bad.
10 - I’m grateful to have a warm, cosy bed to head into once I finish posting, with a warm, cosy husband who loves me exactly as I am to curl up with

I’m just working my way through The Secret for a third time. It’s got me thinking about an ‘attitude of gratitude’. Then, I remembered this thread.
I’m not sure how long you’ve been going with the gratitude journal postings ... but I think the idea was to stay at it ... thinking about all the things you are greatful for ... for some thirty days. What are you noticing? Has the exercise provided changed perspective? Has the exercise generated unanticipated outcomes? Are you attracting things to you? Has it countered negative outlook?
I’ve been doing this for just over a month. I’ve found that, in general, it has made me aware of things in my life to be grateful for. At the very least, it allows me a few moments every evening to reflect on my day and why I should be happy I’ve lived it.
I don’t think positive thinking alone (for example, a gratitude journal) can take away all the negativity of life. I’ve had trying days, just like everyone else. On the other hand, if the only thing I record are the positive aspects, then when I look back over the month it seems very happy.
The other thing that has helped me about keeping a gratitude journal is the increasing ability to transform a negative situation into a positive one, by thinking about it differently. Yesterday I was caught out in the rain. Instead of cursing dumb luck, I instead shifted my focus to thoughts like, “I’m so glad I have dry clothes waiting for me at home,” “I’m so glad it’s raining and not snowing—it’s spring!”, “I’m so glad my hair is tied back and whisking the water away from my face.” And so on.
So the short answer is, yes and no. Life has not dramatically changed since last month. On the other hand, my thinking slowly has.
The best advice I can give you is simply to try it and see if it works for you.
