I started working out about 3 months ago.  Got a nice bonus at work and decided to use a tiny bit for a gym membership!  The gym is accross the street from my job so it makes it easier to go on my lunch break!  (I eat my lunch at my desk an hour before I go work out).  I’ve been eating right...or so I thought!  Turns out I wasn’t eating enough calories and now I’m stumbling over myself trying to figure out how to add more calories w/o eating something bad for me!  I got this heavy b/c I would eat too many calories using very bad choices....mainly, sugary things were my vice....hence I am a diabetic!

So begins my journey to drop many pounds, shape up and hopefully kick diabetes in the butt!  I know it’s reversable so why not reverse it!?

The plan......

Continue working out.  Just recently upped my workout by 10 minutes and added some hills to my treadmill workout
Added a lot more water to my day
Going to see my doctor at the begining of Feb and will ask to see a nutritionist for further advice

One step at a time…

Hi Viki,

Good luck on all your plans so far.  I’m sure you’ll do great.  Congrats on adding the little bit extra to your workout—I bet you’ll see results in no time!

In terms of adding calories to your diet, have you considered things like fresh fruits, whole grains (breads, pasta, rice), or nuts?

Cheers,
Julie

I have been using http://www.fitday.com to track my food intake....

It’s all about a balance...the right amount of protein, carbs and fat....oh, and calories....

If you eat less than 500 calories every day for a week, you will lose weight, but every calorie should be healthy....

Scott says it “how do I want to feel?”....I KNOW when I’m making bad choices, but pay close attention to my body, and can tell what causes it, so next time I think twice.

keep moving!

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

Here’s an update on my journey!

Start weight and inches around my waist:
248 and 44”

Today’s weight and inches around my waist:
241 and 38”

So the weight loss is slow (although now moving) and the inches are peeling off!  So this must be attributed to the old “muscle weighs more than fat” thing.  I hope so.  Also, I’m more motivated to move than ever before.  I’ve never looked forward to working out like I am these days.  Thanks to Scott with his MTM and the gym that’s too close to work for any excuses not to go!  I’m on my way!

Two new things I’m begining on my journey are:
1) more water
2) turning my mouth off at 8pm.  Only water and maybe some tea before bed.  Not a morsal after 8pm tho.

Hi Viki,

Congrats on your progress!  In terms of poundage, I wouldn’t be too worried.  If you feel great and look great, the pounds will take care of themselves.  You’ve got fantastic progress on the inches: I’m so happy for you!

Good luck on your new resolutions.  Let us know how they turn out!

Cheers,
Julie

I haven’t updated my journey in a while.

My doctor put me on a new medicine for diabetics, called Symlin.  It slows down the process of food so that my blood sugar doesn’t spike...an awsome side effect though, is that it makes my appetite close down when I’ve had enough!  For example, I was eating dinner on Friday night and half way through, I just completely lost my will to eat!  Just couldn’t eat any more!  And if I eat too much, I can get naseaus and barf!  Oh joy!  So far, it’s been great!  I’ve been eating right (with forced portion control) and working out too!  I can’t wait to jump on the scale today!  I’ve dropped another inch so now I’m down to 37 inches around my waist!

Working out has been fun.  I’ve been challenging myself to walk faster, longer and even run for a minute or so.  I’m up to 20 minutes on the eliptacle machine and never did think that sweat dripping down my body would feel like such an accomplishment!

Anywho, more soon!

Wow Viki you are making some outstanding progress! 1 inch is great, soon you’ll have a stunning hourglass figure. smile

That medication sounds like it’s really helping you, I’m glad your doctor was able to get you on it… keep up the great eating habits!

As for exercise, that’s so cool that you’re realizing how fun exercise can be. I haven’t fully grasped that concept yet, it must be so empowering to feel like an athlete! You’re doing great all around- thank you for posting all of this.

See you soon, keep on moving. smile

Viki, it sounds like you’re doing great. Working with diabetes is no fun, but it is possible. Great job on your improvements on your exercise and body so far.
