Heya all - I’m new to the community and when I saw a thread about music, I couldn’t help but join in!
Music is a huge part of working out for me… I’ve had a few times where I’ve been almost at the end of my resources during a workout, and then suddenly *just* the right song came on the playlist, and I found I had resources that had somehow been in hiding till that moment. Sometimes it’s the beat, other times it’s the sentiment - but it’s always an inspiration.
I grew up in the ‘80s, so a lot of ‘80s pop and rock makes its way onto my playlist - but that’s certainly not *all* that’s on there. Bon Jovi (Livin’ on a Prayer or Bounce, anyone?), Aerosmith, Guns ‘n’ Roses make frequent appearances, but so do more modern instrumental, classical-with-a-backbeat stuff like Vanessa Mae and Bond. I have the odd gothic track (Sisters of Mercy have some *great* workout tunes), Shakira, Live… oh, and I have some soundtrack music (like the Navy Seals theme from the Rock, and most of the King Arthur and Armageddon soundtracks as well - again, orchestral with a really great beat. Oh, and Pat Benatar, Jimmy Barnes, and the Eurhythmics.
I’m always looking for new track suggestions though, so I’ll have fun reading through this thread.
Hey there Tanja! Welcome to the forums… I love some 80s pop as well, there are a lot of songs that just take me back to childhood, those good old days when exercise was simply playing and you just had fun!
Oh man.. some of my favorite artists that come to mind right now are The Bangles, A-Ha, Cyndi Lauper, Wham!, Tiffany, Tears For Fears, Heart, Loverboy, Wilson Phillips, The Police, Go-Gos, Duran Duran… you know, all those random artists and yeah, even the one-hit wonders.
haha… “I Love the 80s” is a guilty pleasure of mine. There are tons more songs and artists that I love, but my problems is that I don’t know the actual title or the artist- I just know the song. I guess that’s part of the problem of being born 4 years into the decade.
Ooooh! Oooh! I used to *love* Tears for Fears… they’d make a great addition to my playlist. I have quite a few of Duran Duran’s on there already (Wild Boys, View to a Kill & Union of the Snake are three of my favourites of theirs)
Some of the other ones I really love are Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger”, Salt ‘n’ Pepa’s ‘Push it’, Power Station’s ‘Some Like it Hot’… *grin* - they’re all songs that not only have a *GREAT* beat, but the sentiment of the lyrics is just perfect for working out and pushing yourself to!
I also am a big fan of the 80’s music scene!! I have about 10 or more CD’s that I have bought that are 80’s mix CD’s. I am also a big fan of Metal as well and during my spin class nothing gets my legs going like some Metallica, Motely Crue, Guns N Roses, Def Leppard, White Lion, AC/DC, etc… Rock on!!
Wow, you guys have some awesome playlist ideas as well as some cool music podcasts. I got to have music when I’m at the gym or walking the neighborhood- Have too! When I first started power walking a few years ago I only had a small radio headphone set and I always used to listen to What Do You Know on NPR Saturday mornings and crackling radio stations the rest of the week. Now that I have my iPod I have several workout playlists. I am going to share one that I have been using lately. It’s a crazy mix, just warning ya.
Here goes:
MTM: Daily Boost or MTM Show (always first)
Gloria Estefan: Rhythm is gonna get you
Rage Against The Machine: Renegades of Funk (Serious heart pumping song)
Rihanna: Pon De Replay
Beastie Boys: Ch-Check it Out
B-52’s: Love Shack
Kim Wilde: You Keep Me Hanging On
Gnarls Barkley: Crazy
Sheryl Crow: A Change Would Do You Good
Nelly Furtado: Say It Right
Gwen Stefani: Wind It Up
Saliva: Ladies and Gentlemen
Fink: Pretty Little Thing
Blackeyed Peas: My Humps
Beck: Devil’s Haircut
Cake: The Distance
Joe Cocker: Feelin’ All Right
Godsmack: Whatever
Johnny Cash: I’ve been Everywhere
(I told you it’s a weird mix!)
Thanks for the tips on Podrunner. I’ll have to check that music podcast out.
I have heard that one too, Zig Ziglar refers to that throughout his tapes and CD’s. Zig is such a great motivator that I would highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t checked him out!! Thanks to all for the great music ideas I am going to put some of these to use as soon as I fix my ipod. The hard drive broke and so I am trying to replace.
