Easy listening?
Maybe you should talk to your gym about other options. My gym plays different satellite stations on different days.
Me, I just plug into my iPod and go. My taste in music is kinda out there and there’s not much of a chance to hear what I like on the radio.
Speaking of my taste in music...did any of you catch my girl, Imogen Heap, on the grammy’s tonight. She’s the one with the garden growing outta her hair. (Thats how the dude from CSI described her look on the E! red carpet show). God, I love that woman.
I’ll check her out, she sounds very interesting.
As for my gym, I think it’s for all the over 50 crowd (sorry, Tom ) that’s there during the day. I even heard Paul Harvey’s Good Day once. I do have my I-Pod in, but have to turn it way up to drown out their music. I’m thinking the radio control is in the free weights room off of the machine weights room, I’ll check tomorrow.
Bree - watch the over 50 comments - age is only a state of mind.
I don’t even know what my gym plays, I have the MP3 player going at a high enough volume to get rid of all the background noise. Fortunately the instructors in the fitness classes like good music, something with a beat, no matter if it is current or classic, or even classical. Ever listen to Bach Brandenburg Concertos - especially when played by Wendy (Walter) Carlos?
Paula, I forgot you were also in that age bracket, or I’d have made a dig at you too. Just kidding, put the leather away!
OK, I’ll behave now.
I really do love the older people I work out with. But they are more in the 60-70 range. I run into them in WalMart all the time and we talk and introduce each other as workout buddies. It’s very cool. That’s why I love my gym. But the music is a bit slow, probably the choice of the gym maggots, I’ve nicknamed mine Scorpio. He looks like the “hey baby, what’s your sign” type.
I had a 20gig iPod for the longest time, and finally upgraded to this 80 gig video iPod. Sadly, since one of my roomies threw a fit (silly boy that he is), I lost all of my playlists when he deleted iTunes from the community computer.
I bought an external hard drive, set up the new iPod, and have been tinkering with it since early January. Still working on those playlists - let me get back to you on that one, Tom :o)
In the meantime, here are some tasty tunes from last nights’ workout (Monday, 02/12/07)
ROCK ME AMEDEUS - Falco (extended remix)
LIVING ON A PRAYER - Bon Jovi
ALL THAT WE LET IN - Indigo Girls (great song!)
LONG TALL SALLY - Little Richard
THANK GOD I’M A COUNTRY BOY - John Denver
I DON’T CARE (SO THERE) - The Donnas (great band - check them out)
COME SAIL AWAY - Styx
SEPTEMBER - Earth, Wind & Fire
JESUS WALKS - Kanye West
ELECTRIC BLUE - Icehouse (Skipraiders Remix)
NOTHING AT ALL - Heart
ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK - Murray Head
INTO THE WEST - Annie Lenox
SWEET HOME CHICAGO - The Blues Brothers
Yeah, you can see I’m kinda all over the place ;o)
Again, anyone interested in suggestions based on a certain genre of music, just ask. I’m particularly well versed in the 80’s tunes.
Bree, you’re obviously going to have to hi-jack the gym’s radio…
I couldn’t find it, but it was playing some great 70’s rock today.
On my playlist today was Iron Man (live) from Black Sabbath, I was moving way too fast for my warm-up, but couldn’t help it.
Then Green Day’s Nice Guys Finish Last came up a bit later and I had the elliptical up to 11 mph for most of the song.
Those were the 2 that really got me fired up today.
I just purchases off of iTunes, a new playlist created by Aesop Rock...who I’m sure not too many of you are familiar with.
First about the playlist. It’s one created especially for runners and is marketed in conjunction with the Nike + iPod line of playlists that iTunes is offering...there’s currently another featuring The Crystal Method (I didn’t buy that one...it’s been out for a while).
Now onto Aesop Rock...he’s my favorite MC. I don’t listen to much mainstream hip hop, but I do like some of the underground and he’s by far one of my faves. This collection of music is not really hip hop, but just beat heavy, driving, pushing music with occasional vocal touches. He said that he comes from a long line of runners in his family and they all served as lab mice for the music and the “pushability” of it. He also said he felt the music should remain fresh with new elements coming in 30 seconds or so.
I can’t wait to test it on the elliptical tomorrow. I’m listening to it now and it’s definitely got my head bobbing, but it’s not quite the high BPM that alot of you like in your playlists, so I’m not sure if it’s for everyone.
Okay, Tom...I hit the elliptical today with my new iMix.
I was really impressed. It’s a lower BPM (beats per minute) than alot of cardio goers seem to like. This is definitely for the long, slow burn. But IMHO I don’t think loud, fast, pounding music is always the best for a good cardio workout. In the world of the Podrunner podcasts, it seems 140-150 is the way to go, but this mix is slower. I haven’t counted out the BPMs, but I don’t think anywhere it goes over 122 and alot of the times, it’s quite a bit lower than that.
Having said all that, I was worried that I would not hit my target fat burning zone on my heart monitor. But I actually hit my mark quite fast and I had to watch it cuz I kept raising into the 80% area (I like to keep mine around 75%). There’s tons of energy in the mix.
Now for the music…
I really loved it. I love the mellow warm up period and when that beat kicks in...nice.
There’s guitar loops, funky bass, squelchy synths and even some jazzy pianos at one point.
This is not a collection of 10 or so songs, it is one long song designed to mutate and change and keep things interesting. My only complaints is there is not enough of Aesop Rock’s vocals. I love listening to him, and the language he uses in his songs is amazing. Since this is more aimed at a runner, the lyrics are kept to a minimum. There are no verse-verse-chorus patterns, just a stream of vocals that move in and out at all the right times.
If you are someone who likes the faster techno-ey stuff, then I would suggest the Podrunner stuff...plus it’s free.
Amazing ideas, guys! I’m going to check ‘em out, as I get bored with the old stuff fairly quickly. I appreciate all your input on this board.
Believe it or not, lately the one that gets me moving, even at a slower temp as Mr. Danger’s been saying, is “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love” by Barry White. Of course the song of the same title, different lyrics, by Bad Company, isn’t so bad either.
Happy President’s Day. I hope some of you get the day off, I do and it’s unpaid, but I’m grateful anyway. I need the rest and I’m working today to catch up. That means I can play tomorrow. Tee Hee.
Won’t Back Down - Tom Petty
Alive and Kicking - Simple Minds
Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
I Don’t Feel Like Dancing - Scissor Sisters
