You are so sweet, Tom. I am sitting here in my robe after a long hot bath that followed my 4 mile run! I felt fine, got a bit overheated, but will set up some fans around the treadmill so that doesn’t happen again.

I figure I can always pull in the training if my knee starts to feel iffy, so on with the training! And I very much look forward to running outside again, but it was in the upper 90’s today, and tomorrow is set for over 100, I’ll stay inside.

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

Thanks Tom! I have to remember that my body isn’t built like other runners, and that a 5mph pace is wonderful for me. This half is about doing it, gaining the ability to do it, the confidence in my abilities, and enjoying the runs. After the race, I will have gained tons of knowledge and experience, and can from there will work on my pace.

Breath, relax, run.

Wow, a 4 mile run, that’s unreal to me! What an achievement! I manage a 0.7 mile lap every morning, but I collapse straight after! Am hoping I’ll be able to extent the lap by a little every month, that would be great. Good luck on your race, you’re gonna do so well!

You can get here too, Nienke! 4 years ago I smoked over a pack of cigarettes a day, and was very overweight. If someone then had told me I’d be training for a half marathon, I’d have laughed myself into a coughing fit. You’ve gotten quite a jump on my starting point. Why not join the World Wide Half Marathon Challenge, and run the 5K event? You can walk some, no biggie. And there’s plenty of time to train. I recommend the podcast for running by Robert Ullrey on iTunes. It is a 9 week program taking you from no running, to running a 5K (or 30 minutes of running, I run slower than that pace).

Dare ya!

I’m so happy I did! It’s a lot of fun, you feel like you’re a part of something wonderful without ever leaving the comfort of your regular training path. Also check out the Phedippidations podcast. It’s a goofy podcast (his term) all about running.

I look forward to reading about your training!

You’ll love it!

School starts tomorrow, and here I am debating taking a shower when I should be in bed. We haven’t gotten the supplies list yet, so none of the fun of getting the back packs together and the smells of all the new school supplies. But clothes are laid out, and if the girls have fallen to sleep, I imagine they are dreaming of seeing all their friends tomorrow.

I’ve agreed to babysit for the local MOPS (Mothers Of PreSchoolers) group. It’s just one Tuesday a month, and they are hard up for help. That’ll be fun, and give me something else to do.  I already know some of the kids from vacation bible school which is super helpful.

mmmm.... the smell of new school supplies.  I noticed the grocery store had set up a new school supply display when I stopped by there today.

Well, they’re off. Today is just a half day, and they didn’t have to stay. Both of mine chose to stay. Skeeter even took the bus this morning, the house is so quiet.

The other night at supper the word Twinkie got brought up. (I used to adore Twinkies.) We have had this Twinkie pan for years, never used it, and almost threw it out (it was a gift). But we kept it to make individual loaves of banana bread. So in talking about this pan, Mouse asked “what’s a Twinkie?” She’s 6, and doesn’t know what a Twinkie is, I have done my job.

So cool!

This weekend was packed with activity, yet not a single workout. “Life getting in the way” has been too frequent in the weekend workouts lately. And since that is when I schedule my long runs (I’m tired of pushing it back to Monday, though I always do them), I decided to give my schedule a make-over. I jumbled this week’s runs (took out a tempo run) so I could do my long runs on Saturdays. Now though, I’m thinking Fridays would be so much better. I’m going to give the new schedule a chance before I change it again.

Wednesdays are going to be total craziness. LOGOS starts in a couple of weeks, and now Skeeter is in the Junior High club, while Mouse is still in Alpha. Both groups would like me to help out, and I love volunteering for it, so I had them talk and decide who gets me when (the times overlapped). They did, and I’ll be working Alpha 4-4:45, Jr. High from 4:45-6:30, then Alpha from 6:30-7. Most is kitchen duty, but part of Jr. High is a bible assistant. It’s fun working with the kids. I’ll miss being table parent at Alpha, but they have tons of volunteers for that, maybe I’ll sneak over once in a while. smile

Is LOGOS like a youth group?  It seems very early in the evening.  Sounds like a great thing to be part of.
