The rules applied to the race horses I was training years ago. I always used a lot of long slow distance work, even on the horses that would only be running shorter distances - 3/4 mile - 1 1/4 miles. The longer slower work really developed the muscles, strengthened the bones (very important in young horses running on those very skinny legs) and developed cardiovascular fitness. As they got stronger we would throw in an occasional speed workout, just to keep their attention, and always included some flexibility work (even for horses). By following this program we had fewer injuries, or the horses recovered well from the injuries we were treating. Unfortunately, when they went back to the track, most of the trainers went back to the old training programs so the good results didn’t last. One of my frustrations while in the horse business.
So keep up the long slow distance work - for triathlon or running. When it’s time to add the speed, you’ll have a reserve that will let you kick it up and come up with the speed when you need it.
At least I called you a young horse. Actually some impact is good for bone strength in both horses and people. We can do a lot to prevent osteoporosis just by doing workouts that include impact. Bone responds to stress by growing more bone. (Pulls out geek hat )
I’ve met a few runners that over the years of pounding the pavement, they have knee problems…
Yes, impact is important, and it’s different for everybody, but everything in moderation.....well except for kayaking, uhhh and biking.....oh yeah and swimming too!
“Live to ‘TRI’ again!”........a quote I heard today on a triathlon podcast....pretty cool!
Best of luck, Tom… I was just shooting for a 5K run this summer but you just may encourage me to shoot for a higher goal.
With your level of motivation and optimism, I am sure you can schedule the Triathlon on Thursday afternoon between a Marathon and a hike to the top of Mount Everest!!
Since the ‘sprint’ triathlon that I want to do in July (in Carlsbad), I decided to get some race time in.....
So yesterday did the Carlsbad 5000 5K.....
I haven’t run outside the gym all that much prior to the race and my two times have been 24 and 23 minutes (and some change).....
I need to be a little faster for the tri, so I set a goal of 22 minutes to finish.....when I crossed the finish line, they give the ‘clock time’, the time the race started, to the time you cross.....well there were tons of people there, so by the time I went over the start line, 5 seconds had elapsed.....so when I hit the finish line it read 22:01......I thought to myself.....one second faster and I would have been at 22:00.....but felt great......
Then the ‘chip time’ came out later on the internet posting.....21:56......for 3.1 miles....5K.......YEAH! I hit my goal......feels really good....
Now I have a training plan for the next tri.....May 20th...in Encinitas....this is not the tri I am shooting for, just a warm up to the Carlsbad one, but I should gain some experience from it......
