As is often the case in life, the simplest things are often the best. So too with exercise. For example, one of the best forms of exercise running is a direct outgrowth of one of the first things we learn to do walk. And running, often forbidden us as small children (as in “I told you kids, no running!") can reap great physical benefits as we get older.

Indeed, along with swimming, running offers one of the best overall workouts. But running does have its drawbacks. Prolonged running, especially on hard surfaces, can wreak havoc with your lower body. And unless you have an indoor track available to you, extremes of weather and temperature can complicate or curb even the most ambitious running program.

Never one to overlook a potential market, the exercise machine industry has responded with all types of indoor running machines. One that continues to grow in popularity is the home treadmill. Why? Here are three key reasons:

Convenience - Most people prefer not to exercise outside when it is cold, inclement, or dark. Even if you have access to an indoor track or health club, finding a regular time to run during a busy week’s schedule can be difficult. Owning a treadmill solves these problems; people who own one can exercise more often. And, since most people are familiar with the basics of walking and running, treadmills are pretty easy to use.

Physical benefits- Exercising on a treadmill has wide-ranging benefits. As Gregory Florez, president of Chicago’s First Fitness Inc., points out, “walking or running on a treadmill...has great cardiovascular value for the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. It’s a very efficient way to lose body fat, and, since it’s a weight-bearing activity, it has musculoskeletal benefits as well.” And because running can reduce stress, you actually feel calmer and more relaxed (albeit sweaty).

Low impact workouts - Despite all its benefits, years of walking or running can take its toll on feet, legs and hips, especially if you exercise on hard surfaces like asphalt or concrete. Treadmills, particularly higher-end models with built-in shock absorption properties, can greatly reduce the stress placed on your feet, legs and joints.

Ditto.  WhenI want to get in shape, stay in shape and burn fat and stay safe, I choose the treadmill.  It’s quick, easy, adjustable and effective.  There have been many studies that back up your post.  Thanks.

Oddly enough, I much prefer walking outside, even if it’s raining, -15 degrees celcius, etc.  I find walking in place on a treadmill increadibly monotonous, even if I’m listening to a podcast or something.  On the other hand, if I’m outside, I feel like I can connect with people, the environment (even if it’s an urban environment), and the World in General.

But that’s just my position.  If treadmills work for you, fantastic!  Not everyone is my kind of crazy. *grin*

Julie - I’m with you. I’ll take the treadmill if that’s my only option, but I would rather be outside as well. I just find that time on the hamster wheel drags by, while time outside moves more quickly. The scenery is changing, I have a definite geographical goal in mind, and once I get there I have to walk home… hopping off the trail and onto my couch isn’t an option like it is on a treadmill!

I prefer the Elliptical to the treadmill - less stressful to my knees, my arms get in on all the fun, and far less noisy then their conveyor belted counterpart. I had a treadmill, a good one - I loved it for several years, until my eye wandered to another…
I am not faithful to my machines… grin I won’t even tell you how jealous my old wooden Nordic Trak must feel.

I’m with Adam...I prefer the elliptical over a treadmill. IMHO, I know I get a better workout with it than with a treadmill.

But in all fairness - the elliptical that I have is smarter than me - lol! It’s an Octane q45e. (Just in case any one is interested: http://www.octanefitness.com/ )

I actually love the treadmill.  The only time I have ever had success losing weight was when I used to run on the treadmill everyday at lunch.  I used it to get ready for 5K’s, which was my main motivation for running.  Now, I’m saving up for a treadmill of my own, so I can get back to running all the time.  I like the treadmill cause it pushes me to go a certain, consistent speed for a time period.  When I run outside, I tend to run slower than I should.  I just sort of space out and don’t concentrate on how fast I am running or the intensity of it.  But, on the treadmill, I can say I want to run this fast, and I have to keep up or I’ll fall off!
