Hmmm. . . The idea gets my heart racing.

My supervisor has put me in charge of putting a potluck together for this Friday. Oddly enough it’s to welcome new people to the office. . .and well. . .I’m one of those new people. smile

Anyways, I have seen the list of items that are being brought to this event and I know that it’s all very fatty and delicious and most of it is not very good for you.

My question is . . .HOW AM I GOING TO SURVIVE THIS AFTERNOON OF YUMMY FOOD!!??

I could NOT go, but then I would 1> be stuck at the office all day by myself (I really don’t have any major responsibilities so it’s not like it would give me a chance to catch up on anything) or 2> it might send a message that I don’t care about it (which would be bad because it’s for me and some other memebers AND I planned it!)

*sigh*

Make something healthy to bring to the potluck, and just eat that, and if you think it’s not going to be enough food, sneak in a healthy snack.

A Veggie and Fruit tray with lowfat/nonfat dipping sauces would be easy to make a meal out of.  Going light on the dipping, you can easy fill up on fruits and veggies, no problem.  Maybe even allow yourself a little bit of the bad stuff, but just a little.

That’s what I would do.

Good luck!

Sarah -

Pot lucks are tricky.  I agree with bringing something healthy.  That’s a good first step. Bring a bottle of water (potlucks always have lots of soda).  Then, remember that you don’t have to take a big serving of anything.  A couple of chips, one small spoonful of something sweet, will give you a little taste without getting you into too much trouble.  And then fill up the rest of your plate with your healthy contribution and any other healthy stuff that’s there.

And be mentally prepared: if you eat one food you’ll get tired of it quickly.  If you are faced with a big table of food you may want to try everything.  So go in ready to pick out a few things, focus on the healthy stuff and then stop! If your office is like mine, the food will stay out for the rest of the afternoon, which can lead to grazing.  So again, be prepared.  Decide that you won’t go back in for seconds or thirds or fourths throughout the day.

Good luck!

I thought you should know that as I’m writing this I’m looking out my window at the Juneau USCG station.  :-)

Plan on being just a little bad that day.  Eat really well the rest of the day, hit the gym for a extra workout, and then give yourself a little treat at the potluck.  Oh and above all...DO NOT go hungry!!!!  Have a little healthy snack before you go...it will make it easier to not go overboard!
