Hello everyone! I’ve always been interested in fitness, but over the past 10 years or so, I’ve been struggling with
15 to 20 pounds that have crept up on me. I have 3 sons, and the youngest is almost 11. He is one of the many
overweight kids in America. Since he will be starting middle school this next year, he really wanted to lose some
weight this summer. He is my motivation! We both joined WW 3 weeks ago, and when we weighed in after 2 weeks
on the program, we had both lost 5.5 pounds. He is very faithful to his eating program, and helps me get out there
and try different kinds of excersizing that I haven’t done in years. I’ll keep in touch and let you know how we do
this week.
That is so cool that your son is motivated to get in better shape and is your inspiration. I know a lot of parents wonder how to get their kids motivated… I think it is great that you are exercising together, and I’m sure it will help you both be successful. Good luck and keep us posted!!
Hey Laura. Thanks for the reply to my post. We weighed in and Joey has now officially lost 8 pounds in 3 weeks. I’ll keep you informed. I’ve gone down 6.5. I’m happy with that.
We are going on a camping trip next week, so I’m a little nervous how that’s going to fit in to our eating program. We’ll be with a lot of other friends, who love to munch on unhealthy
snacks, etc. I know we’ll be a lot more active, swimming, biking, and hiking. Hopefully that and bringing along healthy choices will help us out on our journey. We’ve made it a goal to
just maintain for the week. Scott has helped me a lot with realizing we’re on a journey. We now don’t “start” a diet, or quit a diet, it’s a lifestyle that we just pick up and keep going every
day. If we mess up, we just “continue” tomorrow on our journey. That’s been a big help to me. “lose the drama, it’s just a diet!”
I’ll keep everyone up on our progress. It’s funny how he really doesn’t want myself or his dad to tell him how to eat, but as soon as we went to WW and someone else is telling us
how many points we should eat, or what to avoid, he’s ok with it!
Whatever it takes!
bye,

Hey Randi,
Welcome to the MTM Land. If I can make two comments? Please get the word diet out of your vocabulary. As you said a diet is something you can stop and start. A lifestyle change is permanent. Also as far as your 11 year old son. I too don’t like being told how or what to eat, in fact I just don’t like being told what to do period. When it came time for me to lose weight, I had to decided for myself that it was time. People kept telling me and telling me, but I did not want to listen. I had to make the decision myself that it was time to change how I lived my life for it to actually work. I tried diets before and they never stuck. Now I changed my life (with the help of my amazing wife) and it is working great.
You’re right! I HATE it when anyone monitors my eating, or tries to tell me what to eat or not eat! But, as a parent, you feel a certain responsibility to teach your children certain things, like good choices,
portion control, etc. And for some kids, it’s ok. But once weight becomes an issue, emotions start taking over. And instead of being open minded, sometimes we just fight back when someone wants to
help us. That’s why I’ve decided to do the program WITH him, and we’re partners, both of us being told how to do things. It’s been a refreshing change.
thanks for your comments,
randigirl
I did write this in “my journey” portion, but just wanted to keep everyone up to date on Joey’s progress. We weighed in today (friday)
and he’s officially down 12 pounds!
He’s feeling really great about his progress. He starts middle school in about 4 weeks, and is working toward a goal of 25 pounds.
We also see the doctor to moniter his progres in a couple of weeks.
I’m down 9 pounds too. It sure helps clothes to fit better, and feel more energetic.
bye for now.

I’ve been catching up with Scott’s episodes and around 46-48 he was talking about getting into shape with the youngin’s. It’s amazing how most children have the propensity to do what the parents do such as activity and eating. Kudos to you for making these changes happen at such an early age!
How much does Joey have to lose? What about your other sons?
Joey’s about 5’3 and started at 188.8. His doctor said to start out losing 25 pounds and we’ll see how that goes.
I think his goal is 150. And as he hits his teenage years, I’m hoping everything evens out. I’m just glad he has
the desire to learn how to curb it now. It will help him out so much as he gets older.
It’s weird, because nobody in our immediate family has a weight problem. I fight with the extra 10-15 pounds
on and off again, as does my husband. I have 2 other sons, my oldest is 20, and my next son is 18, and both are
6’2 and within normal weight range. I think Joey has always felt like he had to eat what he can before his brothers
got at it. (You know how hungry teenagers are!
ps. thanks for the compliment! Your picture is beautiful too
Just a quick update. We went school shopping, and Joey went from a 36” waist on pants and shorts,
to a 34”! That was a happy moment! He was very happy about that. He’s down 13 pounds, and
trying to exersize more. His brother took him down to the school and practised running around it (which
is a mile) because that’s what they do in PE in 6th grade. He’s been biking a lot, but running is different.
He doesn’t want to be the last one in class to finish. We have 2 more weeks to help him before school starts.
I’ll let you know how it’s going.

I’m inspired by your committment to your son and his success. Actually, right now I’m listening to some music for an uncoming seminar and what song pops up? Kool & The Gangs “Celebration”. Fitting isn’t it?
And.. I wanted to let you know that I was chatting with my Weight Watchers friends in New York and directed them to your posts. I just got this reply.
This mom’s recognition of the need to get involved is key. I’m glad to hear they are having a good Weight Watchers experience. The Program can be challenging for children as they are not often in control of their surrounding environments.
Interesting? Kids are “not in control”. Of course, we’re in control… but we can always lead by example and empower them to control more and more of their life. If parents do their job right - by the time our kids leave the nest they will be empowered, well-adjusted young adults “in control” of their life.
Keep up the good work. And thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks Scott for the feedback. I’m excited, and motivated!
The awesome thing about really getting involved, is that I’m getting
fit too. Everyone in the family is “working out” now.
Mom’s have a HUGE impact on what the family does or doesn’t do.
see you around,
randi
