Hello! I’ve really missed being here. I have had a totally cra**y year. High blood pressure (check) High cholestrol (check) Overweight (check)! I have been getting back out there for 7 weeks now and I have to say hearing Scott on the podcast was amazing! I went away for a year and it was so good to get back and have a familiar voice to help me through this. I am signing back up for the premium membership. I have been listening to the last few months of free ones on my start. I have already lost 5 pounds, so here’s to conquering this issue! Conquering “To overcome or surmount by physical, mental, or moral force” It’s brining together my head, body, and a lot of determination!
Day 1 3.73 miles 581 calories
Day 2 2.99 miles 464 calories
Day 3 rest (alarm didn’t go off, setting 2 tomorrow. This wont happen again!)
All help and support is great! Thanks everyone! Scott, Joi and Carlyn please jump in! I appreciate any input!!!!
Welcome back, Candy. The past is the past. What matters now is the present and the future. You already know that exercising again will help with all your physical issues. And feeling better physically is great for your mind!
How are you doing your miles? Outside? Treadmill? Elliptical? something else??? Can you get any weight training in? I burn as many calories in the weight training sessions as in the cardio sessions and maintaining/growing muscle is really important too.
Got up with the two alarms I set ready to workout. My boss called and said the opening person was sick I needed to go in. Worked a 12 hour day 8 to 8. Exhausted. Damn!!! Not answering the phone tomorrow morning..... Joan, I am doing the miles outside using Nike Plus to track my miles. I know I need to add weight training. But I’m so tired after my miles. And,,,,, I don’t really like it.... I need to get over that!
Ask and you shall receive! I was noodling around the forum and sensed hearing a cry for help and found you
The forum is full of support so stick with it! It sounds to me that you are READY to get back on track, so get back on that wagon (or treadmill!) and just keep MOVING forward one day at a time.
As for advice, exercise as consistently as you can, use a food journal and log your food/calories (vitabot is great!), ask yourself “how do I want to feel” at every meal and just being more “gooder than Badder” can make a big difference.
Those are just a few to get you started on track....
Let me or anyone in the forum know if you need a “boost”!
Thanks everyone! I could use ALL the motivation !! Thanks for dropping in Joi! Any advice or help would be greatly welcomed! I am going to start incoporation strength training into my workouts this weekend.
Day 5 2.78miles 425 calories
Day 6 3.61 miles 562 calories
Candy, as far as I’m concerned, strength training is magic. Do you know how good it feels to carry my own bag of manure out to my flower gardens from the car and not have to ask my husband to move them for me?? And to be able to see my muscles (even though they’re not that big)? And to have one of the trainers at the gym I go to comment on the “definition” in my arms when I do a certain exercise??? In my earlier life I thought definitions just came from the dictionary!
Day 7 3.61 miles 562 calories
Day 8 Rest Day
Day 9 4.39 miles 683 calories
Joan, I know stength training is very important. I want to be physically stronger. I am going to start soon. I for some reason just really don’t like doing it. I can walk for miles no problem, but squats and push ups I dread. I need to get over it and just do it.
I hear you. I never would have imagined myself doing squats and push ups and other strength training.
Do you watch television? How about doing 2, 3 or 5 squats during a commercial break? Then do a few push ups during another break. Eventually they’ll add up. My trainer says that the most exertion on the biggest muscles burns the most calories. So 5 minutes of squats does a lot more for you than 5 minutes of walking (especially on the flat).
Day 10 4.32 miles 632 calories
Day 11 5.54 miles 862 calories
Today was my longest walk yet! The scale is bound to move soon! When I first started walking this morning I was listening to a fitness boost from last week and Scott was saying how he did a LSBBBBBBBBBBBB on the treadmill at 90 minutes. I thought no way am I going that long, maybe an hour. Then I got out on my walk, realized that this was time for only me. No phones, no boss, no gripping employees asking me 100 questions a day...... just me..... I felt the wind on my face and realized.... Hey! I like this! (was that a click I just heard? LOL!) I didn’t want to stop after an hour and kept going. Next thing I know I am back at my front door, 5.54 miles and..... 91 minutes! So today I learned I like walking and I need to not set limits on myself in the beginning or ever. Just get out there and see what happens!
And Joan, I am going to try some squats tonight......
Thanks for reading my letter Scott! You and Joi are awesome!
Thanks for checking in with me Joan. I’m so glad you are going to be a moderator now!
Day 12 Around 5.4 miles. Don’t know the calories, stupid Nike Plus lost my run.
Day 13 planned rest
Day 14 planned rest
Day 15 just totally slacked.......
Day 16 5.36 miles 825 calories
Well Joan, I didn’t get to the squats...... I have been logging so many miles because I am in some Nike Plus Challenges. By the time I am done, I’m exhausted. I was going to do them before, but I want all the energy to do as many miles as possible. Trust me I know how stupid this sounds as I am typing it......
Did I hear a “click” in your last sentence? I was pushing the squats because they will give you the strength that the walking won’t give you. Part of what sent me on my journey was watching elderly people be unable to get out of a chair because they couldn’t lift their body weight up. And I realized that when I worked in my garden I needed more and more of a push from my hands onto something to get myself from a squat to standing. I don’t know when it started that I couldn’t just stand up. It happened gradually. The good thing is that now I can squat my butt down onto my heels and then just stand up without using my hands at all. I’d like everyone to be strong.
Whewwww!!! The miles are getting to me. I started to feel light headed on the last mile today. I didn’t sleep very well last night though. I am definitely going to sleep early tonight! Oh, I also need to add an extra mile for yesterday and today. A part comes is for my car tomorrow so I am without a car for these 2 days. I have been walking to the store that I would normally just drive the 1/2 mile each way. I think when my car is working tomorrow though, I still might just walk sometimes!
Just not feeling so hot today. Trying to keep some dry toast down for breakfast. I think it’s because I didn’t pick up my prescription for Celexa my doctor has me on. I didn’t take it for 2 days and now I have all the withdrawl symptoms they list on the website!!!!! Yikes!!!!!! Who knew? After I get this weight and exercise business under control I am definetly talking to my doctor about how to get off this.
Thanks Clay! I don’t know if I am a good walker, but I am acting like one until I get there! Until 6 weeks ago I walked about 2.5 miles a day 3 times a week.
Feeling so much better today! It was nice and cool outside which is great to just listen to an audiobook and walk for miles..... The weight is creeping it’s way down the scale which is great!
