This will start this Saturday with an official weigh in at Weight Watchers and a workout.

I just turned 53 and have two kids, the oldest of whom is getting married next September.  How’s that for motivation?  My youngest is 14 and I regularly (4-5 days per week) drive him to school and then go to the health club and work out for about 90 minutes.  I joke that I am the most fit fat guy you know!  My problem is my diet.  I want to track not only my workouts and my weight; I would like to track my eating.  I will rate my eating each day on a scale of 1 - 10.  One is full blown “fat mode” (my wifes term) and 10 being completely under control.

I presently weigh just about 250 lbs.  My goal is 225 by April Fool’s Day.  Under 200 by my daughters wedding, September 26th.

Welcome, Jeff. I’m sure you’ll find support here. Food certainly is an issue since our bodies don’t work without it.

What do you do in your workouts?

I do at least 40 minutes of aerobic, cross trainer, arc trainer and the like, at a heart rate of 130 - 140.  Every other day I add a weight routine and always finish up with a stretching routine.  My doctor once asked if I work out hard enough to break a sweat.  I had to laugh as you can wring my shirt out after my workout.

Do you have any suggestions?

Jeff

Welcome to the forum Jeff.  This is a great place for encouragement and support.

It looks like you have a good thing already going.  Do you have a plan when you go to the gym for weights?  Do you follow a routine?

LOL about the doctor comment.  I’ve been asked if I’ve just gone for a swim after a few good gym workouts!  No - that is sweat not just wet hair!!

Good job on the moving.

Jeff, the only component that you didn’t list is my personal obsession--balance. Your profile doesn’t give any indication of how old you are but balance becomes increasingly important the older you get. If you were doing significant core work, that would develop balance, but what you’ve listed doesn’t indicate that you are doing core exercises. Can you stand on one foot without tipping over for a couple of minutes? Can you shift your upper body weight and still be balanced on one foot? You should be able to do these things. If googling for balance exercises doesn’t help, I’d be glad to make some suggestions. . . . And maybe your core is strong and your balance fine. smile

DAY 1
Got an earlier start than I expected.  Work till 5 and a card party with friends.  I usually work out early in the morning but could not this morning.  So… I squeezed a 40 minute cross training and stretching routine in before I went to play cards.  Card nights are usually eating frenzies.  But not tonight.  I ate more than I should have but a lot less than I typically would.  I guess I was “gooder”.  On my eating scale I would score it a 6.

To answer the question I am 53 years old.  I do work on balance, core and balance board.  My son (14) and I ski so I work to keep the balance going.

Thanks for your thoughts, comments and support.

Jeff

DAY 2

No workout today.  Busy around the house day.  And… getting ready for my first day of skiing tomorrow.. yeah!!!  Eating was pretty good all day.  The evening I went out to dinner with my wife after dropping my son off to see a movie with his new girlfriend.  His first date!  I CAN’T BE THAT OLD!!!!

I made it to Weight Watchers.  Weighed in at 252.  Eating I would put at a 5.

Jeff, it’s good to run into another skier on the forum. Just keep being more gooder than badder. . .  Where do you ski? Our local area opened yesterday but I have too much to do having just gotten home from vacation and having the family for Thanksgiving for me to go skiing this weekend.

DAY 3

ITS SKI SEASON!  My son James and I got out for 3 hours today (I am counting that as my work out).  I also watched what I ate and will give myself a 8.  I was going to give myself a 9, but I had a donut at church.

Joan.  We ski at 7 Springs resort in Western Pennsylvania.  A small by nice mountain.  James and I have season passes so we can go for just a few hours and not feel too guilty.  It felt great to ski.  We were in mid-season form.  Skiing fast and carving pretty.....

DAY 4

Very busy work day but still got my 40 minutes of cross training in.  I feel really good about that!  I was very good with food all day until I picked up my son at a pre-season high school swim team party.  I was offered a plate of pasta, that I shared with my wife and a cup cake which I also shared.  Not too bad (I guess I was gooder).  I would rate my food for the day at a 9.

I am sure you will be the Dad Hunk at your daughter’s wedding!  Congratulations on setting your sights on being the best you can be on the most important day of your daughter’s life.  Just keep going to the gym and your vision will come to life!

Jeff,
Try putting the treadmill at a really high incline and low speed for intervals.  I have bad knees but can get my heart rate really going with this method.

DAY 5
Thanks iamfit… I appreciate any suggestions!

Did not work out today.  My son had his first High School swim meet and it ran a lot longer than was expected.  I planned to workout after the meet.  Eating was good today.  Healthy and quantities reasonable.  I would score today a 8.

Jeff, it’s good to see that you’re still posting and more than that exercising and monitoring your eating.

We ski at Greek Peak near Cortland, NY. I don’t know when we’ll get there but I picked up our skis from the shop today.

DAY 6

My day was so hectic that I did not think I would be able to work out.  BUT… I drove my son to school and managed to get in about 75 minutes.  Food wise a pretty good day.  I score myself an 8.

I hear you on the fit fat guy thing ... that was me earlier this year. Your goals are totally achievable.

My problem is I fall in love, 7 times a day, with my fork and knife.  I don’t snack on snack food, but my portion size is a constant struggle.  If the plate is 8” across, I can get 9” of food on it.  I now eat from smaller plates, bowls, glasses, etc. Also force myself to eat only what will fit on the plate (i need to see the edge of the plate too), without piling it, and no seconds. This worked wonders for me.

Cheers!

hey Jeff!!  Great Job so far.  Stick with it and you’ll see results.  I’ve been at this for almost a year and I just passed my half way mark this week, so I know it works!!

How’d your son do at his swim meet?  I coach a high school team.  Our first meet is next Thurday and I am hosting it.... so much to do to get organized!!  We are still looking for a Starter - trying to convince the VP to do it!!

Day 7 Thanksgiving!

Eating today is a 4.  I was gooder than expected.  I did not eat breakfast or lunch and saved it all for dinner.  I am pleased that I did workout today.  My son and I walked briskly for 1 1/2 hours at a county park.  It was a beautiful day in Pittsburgh, PA.

Catherine,
My son is a freshman.  The meet was a scrimmage.  They divide the high school team into two.  His team won!  He swam a personal best in the 100 Free and anchored the 400 IM an brought in a victory.  His team was behind when he started.  I am very proud of him!

Day 8

Eating was good (8) and did a long walk (3-4 miles) in a county park with my Son and dog.

Day 9

Fantastic work out day.  30 minutes of weights, 40 minutes of cross training, stretching then a 3.5 mile walk in the part.  Dinner out as part of a Christmas dinner and did pretty well (7).  Got on the scale and down to 248 lbs.

Day 10

Day off from work out.  Still ate well.

All in all not a bad Thanksgiving weekend!

How could you not be a fan of Phelps?  My son’s first real high school meet is this Friday.  He is pumped and I am excited.  Swimming is so good for him.  He has my genes so the exercise is good for him.  He has the build that I have only dreamed about!  How know… perhaps in a year we will both look pretty studly. grin
