Lose weight, but please be healthy

I just thought I’d share an experience from the flip-side of the weight loss spectrum:

My cousin has type 1 diabetes.  She was recently hospitalized because she had gone off her medication, stopped eating properly, and developed a case of pneumonia.  She weighed about 80 pounds.

I know for many of you, the idea of being “too thin” is one of those happy fantasies, like being “too rich.” But too thin carries as many health problems as being too overweight.

I’m rooting for each and every one of you to succeed in your goals (weight loss and otherwise).  Just please be safe about it.  I want to get together with all of you afterwards, and see you bursting with energy, in great shape, and full of happiness.

Cheers,
Julie

Thanks for this perspective!!!  Have you seen the BBC special about the Size Zero? These 2 reporters try extreme diets to fit into a size 0....insane.

That one’s new to me.  You’re right, it *does* sound crazy.

It reminds me of the scene in “Mean Girls” when the girls are in a store called “1, 3, 5” which sells only sizes (c’mon guess!) 1, 3, and 5.  One of the girls can’t fit into the size 5 dress and the salesgirl—a stick-think Asian girl—tells her to try Sears, with an attitude that so clearly said, “if you’re not below size 5, you’re not worth my time… or anyone’s time!”

I’m so glad I don’t hang out with people like that.

Cheers,
Julie

I hope they realize that they aren’t gonna have a lot of friends, since most people aren’t size 5 or below!

I’m happy that you shared that with all of us, Julie. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of the fact that being too thin can carry consequences just as grave as being overweight.
