Hi, my name is Jo from Salt Lake City, and I just joined the MTM premium membership. I need some help staying motivated long-term, and I’m hoping this will do it for me.
Hi Jo! You have come to the right place. We are glad to have you here! I really enjoyed the 100 Days of Exercise challenge when I first began. Be sure to check it out.
Hi Jo! Welcome to MTM. You’ve come to the right place for support. There’s an abundance of it here. Be sure to poke around the forums. There’s so much good information available to help guide you on your journey. Be sure to join the 100 Days Challenge. You’ll be so glad you did! I look forward to seeing you around!
My main goal is to reverse the diagnosis of diabetes I just got from my doctor last month. :( I don’t have a shred of family history of the disease (that I know about, anyway), and that’s even with some pretty darn big people in my family. But I guess at 324 pounds even my 6’1” frame couldn’t handle it anymore. I acknowledge that this will sound negative, but I have pretty much given up on any sustainable weight loss because of my history of yo-yoing, and most recently I haven’t even been able to lose more than 7-8 pounds or so. I just want to be able to step up my exercise (I am far from immobile although some people assume it when they see my numbers) and combine it with some sound nutrition so my blood sugars can drop consistently. I will be 35 in March and have pretty much had no metabolism since I hit my 30’s.
Your numbers, except for the diabetes, are identical to my husbands. He held it well, and didn’t look near that heavy, but it was still very hard for him to get sustainable weight loss. The good news is, we’ve changed that, he’s lost 50 pounds and maintained that loss.
What kinds of exercise do you like? Find something enjoyable, or at least challenging enough to make you want to keep it up. Then get yourself a little notebook and start tracking your food. Don’t worry about counting anything right away, but this will give you an idea of what you’re eating that’s good, and bad.
We’re here for any advice, a place to vent, and definitely a place to celebrate!
I actually am rather active in spite of a sedentary job. I do enjoy doing things I haven’t been able to do recently due to working a night shift: volleyball, softball, swimming. Right now I’m focus on walking: I walk twice each work day during my 15-minute breaks. In addition I usually will do a 30-minute guided walk with my iPod, or walk my dog (weather permitting) for 30-45 minutes.
Do you have a HR monitor? If not, you may want to get one so you can keep yourself in the magic zone. Walking is a wonderful way to lose weight, that’s where I got my start. There is definite hope, we’ll figure out where the blocks are, and simply remove them.

Jo, you can do it. I managed to reverse my diabetes and I control it now with diet and exercise. No medications! With every pound you lose, it will become easier to control. Listen to your Doctor and be sure to MOVE. Good luck to you!
Thanks for everyone’s words of encouragement. I actually met with my doctor today and things were pretty happy. She is not putting me on any medication for now, so I guess it’s still in the “mild” stages, if that’s a possibility. I told her about my exercise regimen (walking on my two 15-minute breaks at work and then most days adding on a walk with the dog or a guided 30-minute walk I have on my iPod) and she seemed really pleased. The scale was also 6 lbs. less than my appointment at the end of December (even with the holidays and a cruise in the meantime), so she was happy there, too. Now I just need to keep going from where I’ve started, and I hope this program will help me do so.
Hi Jo!!! Welcome to the forum, you will definitely love it. The people are so friendly here, and since I joined I’ve learned so much. I’m still in aweeee.
Walking is how I started to loose weight, just the way you are doing in fact. It really works! So far I lost approx. 105 pounds; My goal was (is) to loose 2 pounds a week; sometimes I made it, and there was many times that I didnt. Just know that your not alone!
