Hi! I’m new to the MTM family and pretty excited about it. I want to jump on the wagon with everyone else to start the new year healthier with this challenge. I have been exercising this past week, but I think I am going too fast too soon. Yesterday, I tried a 20 min jog on the tread that left me feeling pretty good. So I thought I would do more and moved over to eliptical and slowly started to go, but my heart rate shot right up and I started to feel shaky and tired. I got off and walked around to decrease my heart rate but it wasn’t happening. So I thought I would try the treadmill again only to have it happen again. So I stopped, and went to the locker to change and relax. It took awhile to calm down. (I believe I was experiencing some anxiety as well, as I have a tendency to have a slight panic disorder). As the day progressed I went to work and I started to feel better and stronger, although I was left feeling extremely tired. I know my heart is healthy as I have had some tests done by my doctor. This morning, I am still tired, but feel rested. I will not be going today and may take another day to recoup. I think I need to slow down and take it a step at a time. So how does one know if they are working out long enough and at a good enough pace? Any comments or help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Rachelle and welcome to MTM land!!!! We are glad to have you here.  That is awesome that you have started an active lifestyle this week.  I think we have the tendency to want to jump in there at level 7 when we should start at level 1 and work our way up.  When you start working out, it is important to look at what you are eating to help fuel those workouts.  I notice that sometimes when I don’t eat the “right kinds” of foods during the day and then go workout, my blood sugar sometimes goes out of whack.  Keep an eye on your diet so that you get lots of whole grains, proteins, and “body fueling” foods to help you maintain your energy during your workouts.  Just set mini goals for you, and it IS great to push yourself if you feel up to it, basically with this challenge, it is all trial and error!!!  The best of luck to you and keep us folks on MTM up to date!!!

Rachelle, you know when your working hard enough if you can still talk without sucking wind, you should work until you feel tired but not exhausted.

Welcome Rachelle

Remember to take things slow and don’t push too hard.  Maybe you should consider getting a heart monitor to wear while working out.  That way, if your heart rate starts getting too high, you will recognize it quickly and will be able to back down on the exercise intensity and possibly start some breathing relaxation exercises for the anxiety at the same time.

Workouts should be fun and should make you feel better.  It takes time to learn where you are, and to learn your limits.  We all have those limits (even Scott, but since he has been doing this for years, his are much higher than ours).  Don’t push too hard until you learn where you are comfortable.  There will be lots of time to start pushing harder, but if we don’t know whee we are now, how do we know what direction to take to reach our goals.

Thank you guys for all your input, very much appreciated and helpful. I am planning on going to the gym after work today and to take it much slower and to have fun with it. I am 40lbs overweight and this is the year to do it as I am turing 50 in November. That is my goal, to lose 40lbs by November. Have a great day!

Its awesome that you’re started! If it doesn’t work for you, you don’t need to do it all at once. Maybe it would work better to fit in a few shorter sessions rather than one big one.

I am starting off slowing. Thank you guys for all your input. I did 30 mins on the tread at a good pace and worked up a sweat. It felt great. I got myself checked up and had some blood work done and an EKG. Everything is normal and at very good levels. So I feel better about that. I just need to be more consistent and figure out how to try to fit this in my day.
