I spent some time reading through your thread last night, but didn’t leave a message because it was late and I knew I had to get up this morning to meet my trainer (.... too bad he didn’t remember I was coming at 10 - he thought my appointment was for 11 and I got him out of bed when I arrived at his house!! His wife had to let me in while he got ready!! But he still put me through a good workout
You are doing teriffic. I am impressed that you are so dedicated to your Jazzercize class - sounds like fun. What a great idea to become the CS rep for the class. I’m sure the sense of responsibility to them gets you there on days when maybe you’d be tempted to take the night off. And good job on moving up the the front of the room where everyone can see you. How many times do you go a week? I have my hands full with all the weight training my trainer wants me to do, but when it is time to change things up I wouldn’t mind doing some form of aerobics class again.
I’ve also got a few questions to ask my chiro after reading through your thread. My right hip as started bothering me a little in the past few weeks - I hadn’t thougt of asking him to check it out- normally he just works on my spine. Thanks again
It’s becoming clearer to me that I am going to have to step things up. But this doesn’t seem to be the week for it as I’ve been really tired with just this routine.
Catherine, how funny it sounds that you had to get your trainer out of bed at 10am. Good for you though! I would love to work with a different trainer for a bit. I’m still toying with joining the local Y and I believe they offer short term trainer guidance to get you started. I have done “Personal Touch” at Jazzercise which is additional half-hour resistance training, with lots of guidance about proper alignment and technique, was very good for me, but I know there’s more out there.
I do enjoy Jazzercise. Even like last night when I was tired and crampy, I knew I would feel better if I went. And being the CSR is something that was offered to me mostly because I was already showing up pretty reliably and early, but it has helped me feel really dedicated. Lately, when I can, I go straight from work and if I can get changed on time, I do the resistance and stretching portion of the workout with the end of the 5:30 class before I do my own. Meant a double workout of the delts and rhomboids and a few extra standing crunches.
For me, the classes offer not only a cardio/strength/toning workout, but also a great support group in having gotten to know a lot of other women of all ages and sizes who are interested in getting fit or staying fit. It’s fun and I really respond to music as a motivator. I used to go out either alone or with my pals to alternative music clubs, which was sort of like aerobic dance except with smoke-filled air (yikes, as a nonsmoker I would come home reeking!) If it isn’t your cup of tea, Zumba (based on Latin music and dance) is very popular and sounds like a lot of fun. My coworker’s wife loves it. I’d actually love to take ballroom/swing dance classes someday, as I never really learned those dances, and it sounds like fun and good exercise.
I haven’t been back on the treadmill in a while. Been taking my nights off Jazzercise as nights off, for one reason or another—work, tired, away from home, etc. I think I was doing better when I made myself do it every day. Might try doing one full week of getting up extra early and treadmilling it.
I usually go to Jazzercise Mon, Tue, Thur nights and the two back-to-back classes Saturday morning. My center is in a church, and there are no Wednesday evening classes. Last summer I was driving to another center for Wednesday and sometimes Friday sessions, but with the chiro sessions, I can’t get there on Wednesdays, and Fridays it was a dead rush to get there in heavy traffic.
And, Catherine, I would hope your chiro would notice if your hip was noticeably out of alignment, as mine is, but he can certainly check it out and see. Mine is constantly a little off, probably helped by compensating for the scoliosis, but it generally only bothers me if it’s way out. I had never heard of a chiropractor adjusting the jaw/neck for TMJ either, but I know someone who went to my doc and she said it helped loads.
I started taking glucosomine/chondroitin about a week ago, mostly to see if it takes the Rice Krispies sound out of my right kneecap. Wonder how long before I would notice a difference?
The one thing about being consistent in going is that I haven’t given up or slacked off. Even with having had a cold, wisdom teeth etracted, back pain, hip pain, work crises, and weekend trips, I’ve pretty much managed to go to class at least 3x per week since January of 2007, except for my week in New York, and I think the Manhattan walking made up for some of it. The flip side about consistency is that there’s a ceiling to how hard I’m working out in a class setting. Sure, the better shape I’ve been in, the more power I’ve been able to put behind my moves, and I’ve gone up in handweights from 3# to 8#. Plus I added the wrist weights. I just keep wondering if I need more. Probably a gym, with a more extensive selection of machines, would give me those options. I’m also trying my friend Jim’s suggestion of working out in little bits and breaks during the day. Easier for him, he trades stocks from his home and doesn’t have to wear dresses and heels. But a little moving for a few minutes during the day does keep the brain more alert, even if the calorie burn is small.
I’m rambling again. Maybe time for that little burst of exercise! --- Ann
Sunday, March 2 (Day 75): brisk walk with the iPod around Jax Beach. I had sneakers and jeans on; there were folks with their skimpy swimwear as it was quite a warm day. I stayed on the boardwalk and streets as I wasn’t quite prepared to shlep it through the sand. Kind of a light exercise, but relaxing and pleasant.
Monday, March 3 (Day 76): arrived to Jazzercise studio in time to finish the last 20 minutes of the 5:30 class. Mary’s back! She was out having her baby and is now taking over classes from another instructor who is six months pregnant or so and has to take it a bit easier. So I got to do some arm, leg, balance work with her and then a full class with Jeannine. Got a tad dizzy during one routine I hadn’t done in a while, and she said I looked pale, but that tends to happen at that time of the month.
New low on the scale Mon and Tue morning. 156. Not bad considering I feel as bloated as a congressman’s travel budget. Helps that I was too blech to eat dinner last night. On the other hand, I lost ONE lousy pound in the entire leap month? Okay, okay. As the horse Clover kept saying in Animal Farm, “I will work harder.” Or was that Jurgis in The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? Anyway, did the underarm flab check and the situation is looking better. My arms look massive to me because of putting on some outer arm muscle, but I guess that’s only to me.
It is great that you have been consitently working out since January 2007. That is great. Only 50 more years to go.
Ha, that sounds MUCH better than starting about 44 years behind!
One part of my current age that I feel acutely: my mother was only 47 when she was diagnosed with lung cancer, and 49 when she passed away. I was twelve when I lost her. Life holds no guarantees, but as long as I can and as much as I can, I want to secure my health, feed my brain, be good to others, and make my life meaningful.
Hi Ann. I’ve been unable to spend much time on the forum recently. . . .
Do you have a TMJ problem? My dentist with the help of my chiropractor managed to move my jaw to free the joint. It took over a year but I now have no pain at all in my jaw, free movement and normal opening. So such things are possible if you find the right people. In fact, the dentist met with the chiro and sent his dental assistant there!
Also, with the rosacea. . . . do you crave sweets by any chance? Have you been on antibiotics? Could you have a yeast overgrowth in your intestines??? That’s what the chiropractor discovered I had. I had to take a supplement, avoid sugar, and drink lots of water. For a while my intestines felt awful--but then they cleared up. I’m asking because another of my symptoms was a sensitivity to chemicals. Even now, the more sweets I’ve had, generally the more intolerant of chemicals I am. The friend that I substitute teach for has an air freshener plugged in and while sometimes I don’t notice it, other times it’s overwhelming. The detergent aisle of the grocery store can be murder--instant headache and upset stomach.
My point is that you can get relief if you can find the right medical person--if you have these issues.
Your consistency in exercising is great. Keep on going and you definitely will see results.
Fortunately, I’ve never suffered from TMJ. But when the woman from Jazzercise who happens to have gone to the same chiro as me (I heard her name mentioned in the office, so I discreetly brought it up) did. And so does a male coworker, so he might seek treatment in that way. It’s great that you could get your doctors to collaborate like that!
I do crave sweets sometimes. Though, I don’t have much sugar nowadays. I don’t know whether it’s just a mental/emotional thing (let’s face it, I’m not alone in liking cake) or something more ‘serious.’ I’ve been on antibiotics at times, yes, but not recently (maybe past five years I think.) Did you take some sort of probiotic? OTC or prescription?
Usually I’m not the one who’s sensitive to products. I have a few friends who sneeze at everything, have to use special tissue products, and can’t use certain soaps. That usually isn’t me. Certain things, though… yeah. Damp-Rid of all things. I found this out many years ago when I signed up with a temp agency and they sent me to a company in south Orlando which packages it. I nearly passed out, had the sweats, etc. I can’t chew cinnamon gum or use Lavoris mouthwash, though I can eat foods with cinnamon. Don’t know whether it’s the concentrated flavor oils or whether they’re fake flavors that does it, but I just avoid that. On the air freshener, for me on Saturday it might have been a combo of that and overdoing it and PMS, I’m not sure. But I appreciate your input! If you have any ideas about the supplement you tried, do let me know when you have a chance.
Jeepers creepers, girl, you’re CLOSE to your goal, aren’t you? Good for you. How does THAT feel?
Tuesday, March 4 (Day 77): Jazzercise class at 7pm, plus the last 15 minutes or so along with the 5:30 class
Thursday, March 6 (Day 79): ditto
I’m taking a road trip Sat-Mon and will probably not get much of a chance to work out, so I’m planning on doing the double classes tomorrow morning before I hit the road, and Monday evening when I get back. I’ll take some time to walk and at least stretch. A already know I’m allowing myself some of the great sweet potato fries I had the last time I was in Decatur, Georgia… glad they’re far away.
Saturday, March 8: Jazzercise classes 8am and 915am
Monday, March 10: Jazzercise classes 5:30pm and 7pm
In between those events I did a lot of sitting in the car, and a good bit of eating. Well, I didn’t do so badly on the eats, I just had richer foods than normal. By the time I got back into town from Atlanta, I was a bit stiff and a bit cranky (rare Monday off plagued by problems with work and I couldn’t get people on the phone), so I did the earlier class I can never get to. It was fun that I have actually had all five instructors in the same week’s time. I feel Mary’s lunges and the upper arm workout from both classes.
Got to Jazzercise early, but not early enough to be changed and ready to do much. I did one of the stretching routines from behind the counter, then just stretched and warmed up some more from back there. In the class, though, I was ready to hit it. I grabbed the 8lb weights and held them through the one leg routine, which doesn’t call for hand weights but they added a little extra. Then when we were to raise and lower one weight I used both of them, crossed and held together. I realized that that two-handed move didn’t have enough resistance in it for me, but with sixteen pounds it does. Wow, have to keep that up.
Way to kick it up a notch!! Good Job! I’m quite impressed with the double classes. I not sure I could handle that yet. But my workouts have been apporaching 2 hours when I have the time.

Thanks, Catherine! I’m sure if you can do a two-hour stint you could handle two Jazzercise classes. The thing is, after doing similar routines for over a year now, I know where I can push it extra hard and on the double classes, I haven’t used the wrist weights. The class is like an arc, warm-up and stretching, then increasing aerobic activity, then eventually decreasing. Then resistance stuff, stretching, and toning, usually working abs, glutes, legs/thighs, and upper arms/back. Every class has slight variations. I’m just glad I’m not bored, I still like the people and the music.
I think I tend to warm up a bit more slowly than most, as often when we’re coming down the curve I have just found my real wind, so in a way the double classes make sense for me. Plus, my weight loss/body changes have slowed down, so I needed to step it up. I’d like to start doing more targeted resistance work. I just haven’t quite made a new plan yet. If and when I do, I guess that means I’m serious about it.
Thurs, March 13, Day 86: 7pm Jazzercise class, with about 10 minutes of the 5:30 class and some warm-up, hand weights, resistance band while I was waiting in between classes. Doubled up on the weights again and used them more. My arms are feeling pretty darn strong these days.
I got one more class in (8am Sat March 15, day 88) before going to Orlando for the weekend. Got in a little walking down there but also a lot of eating, some wise, some indulgent. Back to it tonight, and I’ve got the green exercise top for St. Patrick’s Day… even though I had no green in my work wardrobe.
And 1 1/2 more classes, Monday, March 17, day 90): I arrived in time to do the last aerobic song in the set, plus the arms/legs/abs pieces and the stretching, then the full 7pm class. Once again I worked the arms and shoulders and back pretty well. Hot bath afterwards, and I was already tired at 4pm so right now I’m crawling into bed for a good night’s rest.
Tuesday, March 18 (Day 91): la-de-da-de-dum… another Tuesday Jazzercise class. And a half of the earlier one. Nice to work the arms and abs twice. I wasn’t totally on fire last night, had a bit of a side-sticker in the middle of the aerobic set, which felt odd as I wasn’t quite at the flat-out-of-breath point at any time. Made it through though. Discussed with the 530 instructor that I am getting too comfortable with the 8-lb hand weights, the highest they have, so I may have to look to see if anyone has a 9, if not a 10. She suggested I buy the tens, and grab a lighter set to switch off to until I can handle them more. I don’t know why I’m gravitating so much to upper-body work, when my belly and derriere need the work more, but a lot of it is waiting for the fat there to burn off more. When I lost weight, my upper body dropped it fast (except I didn’t go flat-chested) and my legs got more toned, but the problem areas are still the midsection and hips. We do abs, inner/outer thigh, and glute work in just about every class. I may need more of it… will have to start doing those crunches on my own.
