How to Transfer Files From Computer to iTunes?

Hello,

I finally broke down and bought an iPod to use while exercising.  While looking at podcasts at iTunes I found MTM, listened and decided to subscribe to MTM.  I love it!

Here is my issue:
I have an iPod nano 3rd generation.
I’m using iTunes 7.5.0.20.

I downloaded the MTM archived files to my computer using the instructions listed on the MTM website.

I’m trying to transfer MTM #110 to #117, that is not on the iTunes premium members feed, from my computer to the iPod.
This is what I’m doing.

In iTunes I click on “File” and “Add File to Library”
In the folder where I saved archived files I click on “The_MTM_Show_110”.

Nothing happens...the file doesn’t transfer.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

So you got pulled into the iPod gang, huh? I’m glad you found your way to MTM - and Welcome to your new Premium Membership!

Here’s one important thing to note when you’re downloading programs from the “Podcast Archives”:

When you download a program onto your computer, it becomes just a plain ol’ audio file - just like your music files. So when you import them into iTunes, they will be listed under “Music”, not in the “Podcasts” section.

It sounds like you’ve taken all the right steps so far. Now, just go look for The MTM Show #110 in your Music Library (or use the search bar at the top right). You should find that the program has been uploaded into your Music section.

An easy way to keep your MTM programs organized - create an MTM Playlist:

If you’re going to downloaded from our website, I’d recommend creating an iTunes playlist to hold these programs. Then, you can simply sync that specific playlist with your iPod, and you’re good to go. When you’re cranking out a sweat, you’ll know exactly where to find your shows.

You can even “drag” some of the current podcasts from your “Motivation To Move | Premium Members Feed” in the “Podcasts” section into that playlist if you’d like.

I hope that helps! Enjoy your new programs, and let me know if you have any more questions.

Carlyn, thanks for welcoming me and for the reply.  I’ve been researching this since I posted and I still haven’t resolved the situation.

I checked the “Music” section of the library and the files that I try to add from my computer is still not there.

In my research I found this from the apple website:

Adding content on your computer to iTunes

iTunes lets you add digital audio and video files on your computer directly to your iTunes library. You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes can convert these files to one of these formats. Video content in QuickTime or MPEG-4 format can also be added to iTunes. To learn how to add these files to iTunes follow the steps below.

1. Open iTunes
2. From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
* Mac
o Add to Library
* Windows
o Add File to Library
o Add Folder to Library
3. Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add

If iTunes is set to “Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library”, iTunes will copy all content that is added to the iTunes library to the iTunes Music folder. To adjust this setting or change the location of this folder, go to the Advanced tab in iTunes preferences.

I have done this too and I am still not able to transfer files.  I must be missing a small but important thing.

Sigh...frustrating but I’ll continue to work on it.  Do you or anyone else have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Hmm.. this is a strange situation. You’re right; there is likely just some tiny detail or setting that is not correct here. Just to make sure I’m seeing what you’re seeing, I am testing your methods using iTunes 7.5.0.20 on Windows as well. When I follow the steps above that you found in the Apple website, I am able to successfully add the MTM #110 (or any file) to my Library.

This should not be a factor in whether or not you can see your new MTM files in iTunes. This option simply means that you can create a backup copy of all “added” content in your iTunes music folder (My Music > iTunes > iTunes Music).

It does not matter if this option is checked or unchecked in your Advanced Preferences (as mentioned above) - any added content should still be visible in your iTunes Library. However, I’d still recommend keeping this option checked in order to keep a backup of your files.

Here’s something else you may want to try - the “dragging” method:

1. Create a new playlist in iTunes named “MTM” (click the “+” in the bottom left corner of iTunes to add playlist). Select your new MTM playlist so that it is open (there should be no files in this playlist at this point).

2. Locate the MTM #110 file (or any MTM file) that you have downloaded to your computer from our website.

3. Click (and hold) the file, and drag it into your new MTM playlist in iTunes. You can either drag the file directly into the empty white space of the playlist, or simply drag it over the title of the MTM playlist on the left.

Note: When you release the file into your new MTM playlist, you should see a similar message briefly displayed in the window at the top of your iTunes program: “Copying 1 of 1: The Motivation To Move Show...”.

4. With your MTM playlist open, you should be able to see your new MTM file in the MTM playlist.

I’m going to go do a bit more research on this. Try the dragging method above and let me know if it works for you.

Carlyn,

I figured it out!!!  It really was a simple solution.  It was the Mozilla Firefox.  I downloaded the MP3’s using Firefox and for some reason the MP3’s will not transfer to my iPod, via iTune, when using Firefox.  When I use Internet Explorer to download the MP3’s and then transfer the files via iTunes it works!  Shees!  Thanks again Carlyn for your help.  I guess I should have mentioned that I originally used Firefox to download the MP3’s.  (I can stop banging my head on the desk now and waking up my twin daughters LOL!)

Thank You,
Dennis

P.S.  How does one become a charter member?  Now I wish I got my iPod (and MTM membership) sooner so I can take advantage of the Master’s vault price.

Great! I’m glad to hear that you’re not banging your head anymore smile

The Charter Membership was the very first batch of Premium Membership to join MTM. Some of them have been around as early as October of 2006, and in exchange for their support through our ‘growing pains’, we promised we’d throw a few deals their way in the future.

As it turns out, with the launch of The Master’s Vault, we’re also extending the $200 Charter discount to the first 100 listeners who take advantage of our coupon deal.

I just peaked at your account and it looks like you’ve already found this info in time to grab your Master’s Vault at the discount price. Very cool - I know you’re going to love catching up on all that MTM!
