The topic of what people listen to while working out has come up in a couple different threads recently, and I think it’s interesting.  Here is what my Gym Playlist on my iPod looks like:

AIR
Venus
People in the City
Lucky and Unhappy

Gorillaz
19-2000
El Manana
Rock The House
M1 A1
Last Living Souls
Slow Country
Re-Hash
O Green World
Punk
Clint Eastwood
Every Planet We Reach is Dead
Man Research
5/4

Franz Ferdinand
Tell Her Tonight
Darts of Pleasure
Cheating On You
Come On Home
Michael
Take Me Out
The Dark of the Matinee
This Fire

Joss Stone
Don’t Cha Wanna Ride
Killing Time
Right to be Wrong
Jet Lag
Young At Heart
Spoiled
Snakes and Ladders
Super Duper Love
Some Kind of Wonderful
You Had Me
Torn and Tattered
Fell in Love with a Boy

Basement Jaxx
Where’s Your Head At

Frou Frou
Let Go

Mates of State
What I Could Stand For

The Magic Numbers
Love Me Like You

Fiona Apple
Better Version of Me

That’s 45 songs, but I’m really just getting started.  In fact, I’m just getting started loading music onto my iPod in general.  I only have like 3 gigs of music so far!!  Techno-ish songs are good for when I’m zoning out.  Joss Stone is GREAT for when I’m struggling.  Hearing a strong woman singing gives me strength.  And Where’s Your Head At by Basement Jaxx is my absolute favorite for when I kick it up a notch and really kick my butt.  I actually think my playlist is pretty weak.  Not enough variety, not enough songs, etc.

SO!  What do you guys listen to?  What do you recommend?  Do you listen to different kinds of music for different workouts?  I’ve seen podcasts mentioned that have good music… do you know of any?

Thanks!!

Great thread idea, Squakykitty.  I seem to remember a similar thread a while ago, but your list is really detailed and a great motivator for the rest of us!

Personally, I listen to podcasts while I’m working out.  That way, I can set my own tempo for cardio and stay interested by listening to stuff I’ve never heard before.  I make a point of never listening to MTM while I’m stationary, so that’s definitely on my “gym listening list.”

What about everyone else?

I do a blend.

I have a music playlist with everything from Earth, Wind and Fire to Ciara and Usher.

But sometimes music gets boring and my brain needs a workout too, so then I turn to pod casts.  MTM, Strengthcast, as well as some other pod casts that are not related to working out.  My MP3 player has an FM tuner, so sometimes I listen to NPR.

Julie, I also never listen to MTM unless I’m moving!!  And since I really love it, and each week’s show is a motivator in itself.

I love to listen to MTM while walking on the treadmill, then I crank it up and listen to songs while running.  I like to run to anything with a fast tempo - some Offspring and the faster Gwen Stefani stuff, and a mix of others.

Happy Spring everyone!!!

I found what motivates me is my vision of myself looking good. And when I think or myself looking good, I think of myself wearing a particular brand of clothing, which I never was able to feel comfortable in when i was over-weight. Now that I’m maintaing my weight, I still think of my exellent image of myself. The clothing company, Abercrombie and Fitch, which has there own kind of music which they play in there stores, also has that music online to listen to. So I download that, and I get the idea of seeing myself in my perfect image even better.

I change my gym playlist around quite a lot but one of the current tunes that I listen to is
:
PINK - Stupid Girls

always brings a smile to my face when I think about the video....
I am beaming away on the treadmill when that comes on!

and anything by EMINEM always gets me going too....

I used to listen to Queen’s Greatest Hits all the time, but I hadn’t listened to it in a long time.  After American Idol (yes, I watch A.I. ... ) did a Queen night, I remembered how much I loved them.  As I was listening to their CD again, I kept thinking, “wow, these would be great workout songs!” I think I’ll be adding them to my gym playlist soon.

I haven’t seen the video for Stupid Girls, and have only heard snippits of the song (I never listen to the radio anymore), but some of Pink’s past music has been just the kind of music I like for working out.  I should check out more of her music!  Thanks for mentioning her!

I tend to enjoy listening to music that is either hard rock, metal, or some dance hip hop.  Just as long as it has a good beat, also love some good guitar licks thrown in too.  I will list some of the bands I tend to identify with while working out below.

Metallica
Ozzy
Iron Maiden
Whitesnake
White Lion
Rush
Motely Crue
U2
Steve Vai
Queen
Led Zepplin
Ratt
OMD
AC DC
Survior (Eye of the Tiger- that song alwasy gets me going when I need a lift)
Kelly Clarkson
Kanye West
Beastie Boys
Duran Duran
Depeche Mode
Def Leppard
Black Eyed Peas
Aerosmith

yes I am a child of the 80’s and I love the 80’s hair metal bands!  But for some reason I do like some of the new dance stuff coming out now a days.  Muscially I am strange because outside of the gym I listen to the following types of music; Blues, Jazz, Classical, Reggae, Metal, Rock/hard rock.  Just depends upon my mood.  anyway hope this helps for what it is worth.

While I’m on the bike for cardio I watch The Fit Show (http://thefitshow.com), and when I’m training with the weights I listen to Spin180 podcast.
