My computer is almost full, mostly with podcasts on i-tunes.  I guess what I need to do is start transferring shows to CDs.

What are some of the things other MTMer’s have done?  Are there any other options?

I don’t keep my shows after I listen to them. Since I subscribe to over 75 podcasts, I can barely keep up with new episodes let alone go back to listen to old ones. There is an option in iTunes to delete shows automatically after they’ve been listened to.

For the podcasts I think I’ll listen to again, I put them on CD when my “podcasts” files reaches about 10 G (which, incidentally, is about now).  The ones I don’t think I’ll listen to, I delete.  I tend to work by podcast in general, not individual episode, so it allows things to go faster.

Karen, 75 podcasts!  Wow!

Cheers,
Julie

Hehe… Julie, yes!  At least 75.  I don’t listen to regular radio at all and don’t watch much TV either. And of course, as a podcaster myself, I know many of the people whose shows I listen to. grin

I maxed out my computer with podcasts also. I started burning shows to CD’s. Yikes, that’s alot of CD’s. I think the SMSM shows alone were 24 +.

My solution, after not being able to burn yoga video podcasts and deleting probably 30 plus shows was an external hard drive of 350GB.  So I just transfer over to that and don’t worry about burning or deleting.

Gosh Karen, how do you keep up.  I’m a huge fan of old radio shows and I find it impossible to listen to so many. And each time you open itunes, updates..........it just keeps growing!

My computer was maxed out so I started putting older Motivation To Move Shows on an external hard drive.  And from time to time I plan on rotating these older shows back into the mix.

I have all the MTM episodes archived on external hard drives.  In a way I’m a bit of a computer pack rat, but since storage is cheap, I prefer keeping things I might want in the future.  So my computer room is a bit crowded, 3 laptops one desktop system (all networked), and a shelf with USP external hard drives - one for pictures, one for music and podcasts, one for work stuff, (all are over 100 gigs so I still have plenty of room).  All are shared so they can be accessed by any of the computers.

I’ve started adding some of the older MTM stuff into the mix on my MP3 player.  I have the Creative Zen 60 gig player and that holds plenty of stuff.  It’s amazing to listen to some of the podcasts a year or more later.  Listening to Scott talk about his life, and knowing how he has progressed adds a new dimension to the material.

Wow… I’m glad I’m not the only one with too many podcasts to handle.  I only got into the whole iTunes scene this summer and once I found podcasts I quickly started finding lots of interesting things to listen too.  It started off with educational stuff, some music, but yoga and pilates take a fair bit because some of them are video.  I have been more concious of deleting stuff I won’t listen too again, but there are some with good advice that I want to hang on to.  Someone else suggested an external hard drive and I have one for backup purposes, but I don’t really need to have all this stuff.  I tend toward the pack rat side too and have been making efforts not to let things accumulate in the physical world… so I have to do it in the virtual world too.

Wow, this started out as a point of view and turned into a rant ...

If you insist on keeping everything you download, then extra drive space is cheap.  I bought a 2TB (2000GB) external drive for 400 bucks.  That is in addition to the 600GB already in my computer.  Most of the stuff on my computer is large, memory intensive graphics related to work.

As far as podcasts go, I tried keeping them all, then made playlists for everything (MTM Minutes for instance). After about 5 played, they just became background noise. I lost track of what I had listened to. OK, so I bought a notebook and started writing the main points down from each podcast. This takes a little time. However, once written, I remember the material longer and I don’t need a computer to find the lesson again. Most of my MTM podcasts are now noted like this.  Handwritten, not digitized.  I play something brand new, make notes and finish by reading the notes I have made of other ones.  I only need to read them a few times and they are committed to memory.  Then an occasional review to keep them fresh. This whole process of reviewing my notes takes less than 20 mins.  (I am keeping the SMSM program though).  In the end I spend less time with each podcast than I did before and get more out of it.

It is a good organizational routine and works for me, others will think it is whacked. To each their own.  Regardless, I spend less time loading my iPOD with “stuff” (because there is less to choose from), get to the workout faster and get it done so that I can still go live life.  I stopped being a slave to technology, and found that it is a great tool.

There are some things that I listen to over and over, but not many. Even if I kept everything forever, I still only listen to a few things again.  Most of it would just get lost in the clutter anyways.

I save the new podcasts for my daily commutes and listen to them there first, and again in the next day or two to make notes. Then I usually trash them. I now limit my podcasts to what I have the patience to archive this way, and the rest have been unsubscribed.  Like food, everything is best in moderation.  This includes, but is not limited to: sleep, work, sex and yes ... podcasts.  I spent the first 35 years of my life without podcasts, they are not going to dominate my time now.

This won’t work for everyone. I do not have a lot of time to listen to things. My job keeps me moving or on the phone and in front of clients.  Podcast time cuts into my personal time, therefore, every minute spent at the computer downloading or organizing is a minute not spent on execise or with my family.  I am inherently lazy, and will use any excuse not to work out, work, or get up an get moving.

I beleive I have beat this to death. LOL I must now turn off the computer and go exercise. I am only on Day 2 and I am already procrastinating my workout.  You can publicly lynch me later, but first I must workout. smile

Hi Derek,

Wow, I’m so impressed at your commitment to take notes on all the podcasts.  Maybe you should pass them on to Scott: he could use them in his new book!

Cheers,
Julie

I’m not sure he will be able to read my chicken scratch. Most of them are already written out verbatim on this website.  I didn’t realize that until I went looking around today. Imagine all my hard work, for not LOL

Don’t say that!  It helped the message stay in your brain, and it’s always useful to get things in your own words (even if your own words happen to sometimes be the same as Scott’s own words).

I actually used to do something similar: I’d listen to the shows, then email Scott my comments about it.  I don’t do it anymore, but it helped me remember stuff from the shows at least as much as it helped him by giving him feedback.

Cheers,
Julie

That is so true Julie.  I treat this just like any university course.  You get out what you put in. Study hard, work hard and play harder. It is actually a lot of fun.
