my race report from the WWHM day.....

13.1 miles....
8:00 am Sunday morning October 14th, 2007
Location: San Onofre State Park

Beatutiful morning.....spent the earlier part of the morning placing water bottles at the 3 mile, 6.55 mile 10 mile markers.....

Warmed up, stretched and at 8:00 exactly....started the podcast “cheers from the world” (and the race)...... first two miles were under 16 minutes ....and I felt good....
picked up the first water bottle at mile 3.....exited the park, and went towards Camp Pendelton....towards “Las Pulgas”.....listening to the podcast was great on my video iPOD.....kept me running strong....(the mantra’s were great)...the only problem with the video iPOD is that when you running you shake the hard drive, so about 45 minutes into the podcast, my iPOD stopped working......but that was okay, I had heard most of it...and it was a quiet beautiful morning...and I still felt great.....
Turning around at the 6.55 mile point, and getting the second bottle of water (with electrolites added).... about the 8 mile mark, I was feeling tired, but looking at my time, I knew I was trending towards a personal best (since I never have done a half marathon...any time would be!)....i started heading up this small hill...and felt my legs getting heavy, so walked for a minute.....then off running again....
At the 10 mile mark, I got another bottle that I had stashed, and put it over my head.......felt really good, and I kept pushing on....thinking, it’s only a 5K longer....I felt myself slowing down, and decided to walk for a minute again....as I passed what I thought was the last mile marker....so I walked a minute, and then took off to finish the race...i looked at my watch, and I was WAY ahead of my goal....and felt good, so pushed hard......until I realized I still had one more mile to go, as I passed the last mile marker (I had put out before the race)......I was breathing hard, having thought I was close to being done, so i walked for 1 more minute......and said.....I will push to the end.......which was the longest mile I think I have ever run.....I saw my car and sprinted towards the finish!.......

1 hour 53 mintues and 23 seconds!  YEAH!!!!!

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

HERE IS MY RACE REPORT:
--------------------------

I’m training my first Marathon.  It will be run at the Cross-Country Marathon in Tampa, FL on Nov 18, 2007.

http://www.tamparaces.com/X-Country/index.htm

So I found a local park that has trails across rolling fields and through woods.  The park is called the Miccosukee Greenway.  I drove by myself Sunday around 11am.  There were a few other people at the park.  I’ve run the half marathon distance last February at the Tallahassee Marathon, so I knew there should be no problem finishing. But as I got out of the truck, stretched, and began preparations I had a sense of excitement and nervousness.  Part of it was due to running an official race rather than training, and part was due to running in a new place.  Another new thing was that I was wearing my new Saucony Triumph 4 running shoes.  I know you’re not supposed to change things for a race, but my Nike Shox were completely shot and I got new shoes the night before.

The weather was beautiful.  It was sunny, without a cloud in the sky.  The temperature was about 69 degrees farenheight with a slight breeze.  I had prepared an ice chest with three 20oz bottles of Gatorade, and 2 bottles of propel.  There were also 4 powerade gel packs in there too.  I set the ice chest in the back of the truck, finished my stretches, set my iPod Nike+ to the half marathon distance and started running.

It was only then that I realized that due to operator error (mine), I had blown the podcast upload and wouldn’t be hearing phedipidations or any other podcast during the run.  Fortunately I had a 40 min music loop that I went through about 3 ½ times.  I loved the first time through, but by the end, it was pretty boring.

The park is a series of adjoining properties that have been pieced together.  This means the boundaries go back and forth with the park being a lot longer than wide and with it being very narrow in some places.  The trail was essentially a long oval, with many places where each side was separated by a few feet, and others where it was separated by several hundred yards.  It was very pleasing to the eye, and refreshing to be outdoors on such a lovely day.

My run began with about a ¼ mile uphill run. I always start out pretty fast (for my speed) and I completed the first mile in 9:08.  I turned back on the loop at 3 miles and was back to the starting point at 5 miles.  By this time my pace had slowed to around 10:13.  I chugged an entire bottle of Gatorade and started out again.  After 1 mile through rolling pasture, I started down a woodsy trail, and fell.  As I rolled, my iPod status button must have been pushed, because it told me I fell at mile 6.06.  Since I was going downhill, I fell downward pretty hard and landed on both hands and then rolled over my right shoulder.  I hopped back up and kept running, but now I had dirt all over my back.  This continued to be an annoyance for the rest of the run.

This time I kept the loop short, and circled back at only about a mile and half.  I didn’t seem to be sweating as much as usual, but I was extremely thirsty and didn’t want to get to far from the water.  I started out again, this time going 3 miles.  I was still feeling pretty good about the run and my pace.  As I came back to the truck for the third time, I stepped in a large pile of dog poop.  This pissed me off very much.  I really, really don’t like dog poop on my shoes.  So I was running along, trying to swipe my shoe sideways on the grass.  I was very hot and tired at this point, and wound up taking a walking water break and downing the rest of the second bottle of Gatorade.  I really lost some time at this point.  I grabbed up the third bottle, took it with me and started out on my last loop.  It was uphill again, through the fields and into the woods.  I think the cross country run is much harder than the street running I do in my neighborhood.  My mental toughness was fading, and I was having doubts about my ability to run.

As I ran my last mile (uphill by the way) I hit a peak of 10:21 min/mile.  As I forced my way uphill, my thoughts were on the marathon, and how tired I felt.  I really felt some dismay as I realized that at that moment I would only be at the marathon halfway point.  I was really feeling like I should be much stronger at this point in my marathon training.  I mean, I’ve only got 35 more days before the marathon, and here I am feeling wimpy about the half marathon.  I finished the race going downhill and hit an 8:20 pace, finishing strong.  My total time was 2:10:14, which is a personal best and beats my other half marathon time by 7 minutes.

At several points during the race, I though about how people all over the world were joining in to run together, and I imagined being shoulder to shoulder with them.  It was a nice feeling of camaraderie At another point near the end, I was passed by a group of 3 high school age boys running in great form.  I felt jealous of the easy smoothness and speed of how they ran.  Granted, I was at about mile 9 for me, and it looked like they had just started – so I should cut myself some slack.

I’m happy I ran this race with you runners of the world, and thanks to Steve and the race coordinators for making this event a reality.  Run long.

Oh, Brad, that is the most entertaining race report I’ve ever heard. Did you ever get all the poop off your shoe? Poor thing. I think you did great, and at the marathon there will be people running with you, cheers from the sidelines, and no dog poop. I know listening to Phed on the run helped me a lot. And you still got a PR, which is wicked cool. I’ll be cheering for you during your marathon, and I’m sure all of MTM will be too!

Julie, I heard you mentioned also, pretty cool! It was towards the end when they were listing off the finishers as they came in. It was great! I think I’m going to call in for the results show. Want to send love audibly to my team and other fellow runners!

Tom, great job!

And great job to everyone else too, Christopher, Julie, Judy, Carrie, Liz, Shawn, and everyone else I haven’t heard from. Off to view the race results!

Goal: to run the half next year. I can do it.

Good job all, I really got in touch with the feeling of us all being in a race together.  Thanks so much for all your support too.  I know you’ll do great on the 1/2 next year Bree.  Good point Tom, you’re right about this marathon being my personal best!  I think I seriously have a shot at a 4:30 marathon.

Poop update: I left the poop shoe on the driveway when I got home, planning on cleaning it up later after a nap.  My wife cleaned it for me!!!!  She is a pet person and for some odd reason doesn’t mind it.  I HATE DOG POOP!!!  I LOVE MY WIFE!!!  (Those two don’t necessarily go together!)

Description:  This was my first 5K race, and the first time I’ve done this distance outside. It was incredible! My goal was 35 minutes, and when I was within 200 feet of the finish line and saw I could maybe make it under 33, I sprinted for it, and got it. I’m only 5 foot tall, so my little legs were really spinning. I’m hooked.

WOW! I’m so stoked for you Bree!
Great job!

I’ll see you at next years Half! We can cross the finish line together

Hi Everyone,

Its wonderful to see that everyone had such a great race day.  This was the first time I have have run a half marathon, I’ve run 5k’s and one 10k.  I have been training for this race since I signed up for it back in June or July, but I haven’t been doing much other than my normal workouts and the long run on Sunday.  The long run basically was adding a mile or half mile on each week.

I was a little hesitant to run the race because my husband was supposed to run it with me and we were going to have a relative watch our daughter.  My husband was called away on a fire assignment just a few days before the race (he’s a wildland firefighter) and I could not get ahold of anyone to watch my daughter.  So I ran the race with her and my dog Gabie (who is always my running partner).

I haven’t been running with my daughter for over a year now because she always wants to get out and run too.  I think that is wonderful, but she is three and runs about 50 yards and then doesn’t want to run anymore and doesn’t want to get back in the jogger stroller.  It can be very frustrating when she does this at the midway point of a long run and can make the run very unproductive.  So this time I was ready, I had games for her to play, a movie for her to watch and all sorts of healthy snacks--its amazing what you can pack into a jogger stroller!  I am very happy to say that she stayed in the jogger stroller for almost the entire race!

I wish my race time would have been better, and it might have been had I only been running as planned, without the jogger stroller, and we had to make one potty stop (she is in the middle of potty training, and any parent would know why I would have to stop and let her use the potty). We also had to stop for a few minutes to admire a newt that was on the trail, we don’t see these except after rain, and we had to make sure he made it off the trail before a bicyclist came by (the trail we run on is a popular bike path.)

I also made a wrong turn heading toward Kent Lake which took me to a very very very steep dirt hill that was still part of the trail.  I tried very hard to get all three of us to the top, but when my Nike+ said that we had made it to the midway point I was very thankful that I could turn around.  I had to turn the jogger stroller sideways and unload my daughter so we could walk down the hill.  It was that steep!  I don’t know what I was thinking, thinking I could push her up that hill!!  I will never underestimate how heavy a 30 pound child and 10 or so pounds of jogger stroller & gear is again!

Location:  Point Reyes National Seashore & Samuel P. Taylor State Park (Cross Marin Trail to Kent Lake and back)
Date/Time: Oct 13, 2007 start 9:00 am
Distance: 13.1 miles
Finish Time: 3:14:30
Running with me:  Jamie (3) and Gabie (dog - 8)

What an amazing report.  You without question get the “Gutsiest MTM Half Marathoner” award.  It sounds like you paid attention to what is important (potty breaks, newts, 3 yr olds...) and still got your long run in.  Congratulations for doing it despite the natural flow of things that would suggest you let it go.  Good job!

It’s been two days since I ran the half, and my legs are a little sore, but I feel GREAT.....for me, it really proved that I could do the half ironman coming up in march...and compete!

What a great thing Steve ‘Runner’ started!

Way to go to all the MTM team!
