... really.

Here’s an interesting blog posting from the Broadsheet (women’s issues) Blog on http://www.salon.com:

Bouncy breasts seek better bras

Here’s a welcome development: Some sharp-eyed researchers at the U.K.’s University of Portsmouth recently completed a study of breast jiggle during workouts, and have concluded that the world needs better sports bras. Thank you, science!

According to a story in the London Times on Monday, breasts bounce just as much during a slow jog as they do during a sprint. And when a woman is running, her boobs tend to move in a painful-sounding figure-8 pattern, with “51 per cent of the movement being up and down, 22 per cent side to side and 27 per cent in and out.” ... Researcher Joanna Scurr says conventional sports bras reduce up-and-down movement, but aren’t designed to deal with side-to-side or in-and-out bounce. So it’s not terribly suprising that test subjects of all sizes—from A cup to the rather mind-boggling JJ cup—reported suffering breast pain during exercise. And such pain can discourage women from being active.

So why doesn’t a better bra exist already? The world’s research and development departments have turned their attention to plenty of non-life-or-death subjects already, so why not the problem of galloping boobs? Well, we’ve noticed before that bra-technology news tends to be long on advertising spin and short on data. Plus, as Scurr told the BBC, “Sports science has always been dominated by men and for them, studying breasts is seen as slightly laughable.”

I suspect the responses in our comments section may bear this out. But, of course, women aren’t the only ones whose naughty bits need support. The original athletic bra, after all, was made out of two jockstraps. And who can forget the bro (or, if you prefer, the mansiere)? Men’s support vests do exist, just as “Seinfeld’s” Kramer envisioned. So improved over-the-shoulder technology may wind up benefiting both sexes.

Anti-breast bias notwithstanding, Scurr’s research has spurred invitations to collaborate with lingerie manufacturers and the British military (!), with the aim of developing a “smart fabric” that will contain breasts better. In the meantime, she recommends that pained consumers seek out encapsulation bras, whose molded cups offer more sideways support, rather than smoosh-style compression bras. Happy hopping.

Wow…

Not much else to say ‘bout that.

So do we need to start championing for new support? (pun intended)

This totally makes me giggle, but really, it’s about time.  I could use a decent sports bra (especially when I’m tap dancing) tongue laugh

Aha, I KNEW that there would have to be some talk about sports bras here! The search engine didn’t work for me.

I was hoping someone could recommend a good one.  Since I started Jazzercise last January, typically I wear two bras, a regular underwire one and a sports bra on top.  Yes, I have need for that much support. And no, 70 pounds down, I don’t think my breasts are any smaller. They are maybe different because I’ve done pec presses and my posture is better. In some ways they look bigger because my shoulders and upper body look smaller around them.

I would recommend wholeheartedly what a kind older woman, a retired physician, recommended to me, that I go to a local boutique lingerie shop (not Victoria’s Secret) or a quality department store and have myself measured and fitted with some good bras. I must have been buying the wrong size for a long time.  I would still like to find an excellent, accommodating sports bra so I don’t have to sweat up two undergarments, and to wear with workout tank tops when it’s warmer.

I use these, and sometimes add a compression bra over it (I’m in between sizes). They last a long time, come in lots of colors, and look good under regular clothing if you want to just wear it all day before hitting the gym.

But I also saw this one, and will be looking for it on my next trip! I’ll rate it if I find it.

If I don’t see it on the shelves, I’ll order one. Uh, for research purposes. wink

The Danskin product looks nice. If only it came in a DD. Maybe it does, outside of Walmart’s stock. I’ll check.  Thanks!

I absolutely agree with the advice about going to an upscale lingerie store and be fitted by a professional bra fitter (or check with your local major department store - they often have trained bra fitters in their lingerie departments).  I have done that in the past and found that the bras I ended up purchasing, while more expensive, were well worth the added cost.  (I was then able to find the same bras, for cheaper at other stores!)

You might check out http://www.justmysize.com or http://www.title9sports.com as well (here’s a link to their DDs!).

I too wear two bras while working out, a regular one and a sports bra. I have been fitted so I know I’m getting the right size (I got fitted at JC Penney’s in STL). It’s just hard to find quality support on a college student’s budget.

I’ll chime in and agree with Judy. A good sports bra, although pricey, is worth the investment.
Think comfort in the neck, shoulders and back when excercising.

We have Sport Authority here in FLorida and they carry a line of sports bra’s called Champion. While they do carry
inexpensive models too, they have very good ones for large breasted women in the price range of $30-$50.

I don’t run, so I couldn’t tell you if you will still bounce, but the one’s I’ve had are great.  I did get one in London last year,
OMG, so advanced compared to our’s here. Very pricey though.

I just bought 2 new ones at Wal-Mart. One is medium impact (Danskin Active Sport), one is high impact (Bestform). Both are under $10. I’ll let you know how they work, and after having and nursing 2 kids, gaining and losing 50 pounds, I need all the help I can get.

Sorry Chad, you were warned. LOL

Good morning, ladies (and Chad).

I actually found a couple of great sports bras at Title Nine.

http://www.titlenine.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=2166&itemType;=PRODUCT&iProductID;=2166&RS;=1&keyword;=frog

It definitely holds you still and is pretty comfortable; it just doesn’t wick so you get rather moist, but if that doesn’t bother you I highly recommend it!  This looks like a standard sports bra.  The other one I tried:

http://www.titlenine.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=2148&itemType;=PRODUCT&RS;=1&keyword;=310109

This is an underwire bra, wicks, and supports.

In general Title Nine has a huge catalog of sports bras from light support to heavy, a bit expensive at times, but they work.

When I started working out, I bought an expensive sport bra that was well worth the price! Now that I basically have nipples at the bottom of my pecs, it is less of an issue, but I also like to make sure that I am not “showing through” if it is cold in the gym. I highly recommend the sports bras and sport tops from http://www.lucy.com/jump.jsp?itemID=270&itemType;=CATEGORY&path;=1,2,236,270. They are comfortable and hold everything in place so that I am more likely to concentrate on upping the intensity of my workout more so than avoiding a black eye ( but since I am now a 34a that probably won’t happen!)

I swear by the Champion Powersleek sports bra.  They are $40, but last a long time and keep everything in.  I have a large chest, 42DD, and I only have to wear this bra, no doubling.  http://www.championcatalog.com They are at Sports Authority, but usually not the larger sizes.  Well worth the money!
