My Workout At Work

I’m a commuter to work so I spend over 2 hours a day just in my car going to and from work. By the time I get home it’s late - and I don’t feel like doing anything, well except for cleaning and fixing dinner. At 5:30 I get up, brush and repeat. I’ve tried so hard implementing some form of exercise routine into my schedule but it never works out for very long. I use to get up at 4:30 and walk before getting ready for work, never consistently, always tired and then winter came.

Well, I found something that worked. A few other people at my place of employment that we’re tired of being overweight and wanting some extra exercise. So we decided to begin walking during our lunch hour. As far as I can guess (which was grabbing a ruler, printing a map of the area and seeing the distance we walked) we’re walking at least 2 miles a day just at lunch time. Some days I want to die walking it and others I’m trying to shave off time but without my co-workers I wouldn’t be doing it at all! And on those rainy days, we don’t stop walking....we make repeat trips up and down the 3 flights of stairs in our building, talk about a workout.

Does anyone else have any good advice for a work workout?

Hi Brandi!  Welcome to MTM!

First, congrats on taking charge and starting that lunch-time walking group!  It was great thinking to figure out what time you *do* have and use that to do something good for yourself!

In terms of other “workplace workout” stuff, how about this link:
http://exercise.about.com/cs/exerciseworkouts/l/blofficeworkout.htm

It’s from about.com and lists a few workouts you can do while sitting at your desk.  How much easier can you get?

Let us know how it goes!

Awesome, I will forward the link on and implement it into my routine. I hate being stuck in a cube all day at least this will give me something to look forward to!

Its nice to see that there are other people with the same hectic schedule I have.  I commute 3 hours a day and also can only seem to fit exercise in during my lunch break.  I always keep a workout bag with my gear ready to go, so I don’t have any excuses.  I have a nice park area where I can stop for a few minutes and do some yoga or with a dumbbell or two do some strength training.

Good Luck!

Hi Aimee, welcome to MTM!

Great idea on keep the workout bag in your car.  I keep workout clothes in my backpack just in case I feel like going to the gym, so I guess great minds think alike!

I bet it’s lovely to move in a lush, green park.  (It is lush and green this time of year for you? *grin*)

Once again, welcome!

Thank you Julie!

I actually keep the workout bag in my office so I don’t have to go out to my car to get it (no excuses) and I have a visual reminder to exercise. This is because I can’t go to a gym to exercise - I wish I could, but with my busy day I can only really workout during my lunch break—and the nearest gym is 30 minutes away!

I am also very fortunate to work in a National Park, which when it isn’t raining is a beautiful place to workout with hiking and biking trails almost just right outside of my office.  It is lush and green most of the year, except in late summer the grass turns brown. smile

Aimee, I would gladly take your National Park setting any day, even with rain. So just “open” a little corner of your workout gear bag for an outdoors wanna be.
Great to hear how you are setting yourself up for success.

Hi Stepperup,

I’m not sure what you mean by “So just “open” a little corner of your workout gear bag for an outdoors wanna be.”

But thanks for the praise on setting myself up for success!

BTW:  I like your quote, “Script your own destiny” its very empowering.
