I’m getting frustrated with using body weight as a measure of my progress.  I’ve heard that body fat percentage is a more reliable measurement.  I could go to my fitness club and have it measured by a personal trainer, but there is a charge.

Can you purchase body fat measurement scales?  If so, do you have one?  Is it worth buying one?

I have heard Scott recommend the Omron Body Fat Loss Monitor and they also make several scales that do it to.

http://www.amazon.com/Omron-HBF-400-Body-Monitor-Scale/dp/B000FJQ48I/ref=pd_bbs_sr_10/002-2411371-2024804?ie=UTF8&s;=hpc&qid;=1188184086&sr;=8-10

There is a chart with a comparison of their different products including scales.

Thanks for the link - I have been thinking about purchasing a body fat analyser - Now I know where to look!  Thanks again…

I also have a Tanita scale, which measures body fat percentage, and I love it.

Here’s the one I use.  Probably about the same quality.  Definately the same price.  I’m pretty happy with it.

How often does everybody here check their body fat?

I have a Thinner scale that measures body fat. It has me at about half a percentage lower than when a 3 site skinfold analysis is done. It definitely helps me see that something is happening even when my weight isn’t moving. I do find that it is affected by how much water I am retaining because it looks for dense tissue and the water isn’t dense.

I weigh myself and do the analysis daily. I’m a bit compulsive about it but I don’t want weight to sneak up on me.

Bree,

I also have the Tanita scale, but I’m finding the body fat measurement to be a bit confusing.  I’ve finally managed to lose about 4 pounds over the last week (water weight, I suspect, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed!), but the bfp has increased from 39 to 43.  I know I haven’t added more fat to my diet, so what’s happening here?  Shouldn’t this measurement drop along with the weight scale?  I’ve been doing alot more weight lifting type exercises.  Could it be that?

Mine does that when I drop weight too. My guess is because when we lose weight, some is fat, some is water, and some is probably muscle. Then you put the water and muscle back, and the fat percentage drops again. Don’t worry too much about it, but that is a good question to ask Scott.
