My name is Karen and I turned 46 on Sunday and this is my birthday gift to myself. I’ve been listenining to Scott ever since I got an Ipod but of course I would start and stop all in the same week.  My problem is all or nothings.
The only time I’ve ever lost weight is with prescription diet pills I would purchase on the internet. Secretively of course. Everyone else thought I was just incredibly motivated and strong willed.  The problem with them, besides the enormous amount of money they would cost, is that I felt so unhealthy, wouldn’t work out due to lack of any energy and the weight would pile on so fast after I was done with them it was like a shock wave.  Now I’m cycling back up again to 176.6 lbs this morning at 5’7” I can carry it pretty well, but as typical looking at vacation pictures this past week, I ain’t carrying it as nicely as I thought!
I have severe depression without medication and the one failproof medication for me is movement and exercise!  I feel like a bizillion bucks when I’m working out....and yet....it’s all or nothing for me.  I’m the most religious exerciser in the world for 3 weeks and then boom, an injury, or a drama and I’m OUT.
Food is my drug of choice.  I’m lonely and depressed and fattening food is my only solice and friend.  I’m somewhat new in my big city and it’s just easier to curl up in my bed with my dog and a bag of chips then to put my big butt out there for ridicule.
I’m telling y’all nothing new, I realize that. But it’s mine.  I really, REALLY want to maintain the motivation to get and stay healthy without all the major dips and peaks.  Just one foot in front of the other.
I want to start the 100 days of exercise.  I actually started last Wednesday after my vacation.
Nice to meet y’all.  Any San Francisco members who may need a walking buddy?

Hey Carren, first thing you should do is stop beating yourself up, it doesn’t help! Second, get in that 100 day challenge there are a lot of people who will support you!You Can do this, like the old Japanese proverb goes, you fall down 7 times you get back up 8!(Thanks to Tanja for teaching me that one! wink ) Welcome to MTM land!

Welcome to MTMLand, Karen!

Amen to what Shawn just said!  Beating yourself up will get you nowhere fast!  grin Did you realize that beating yourself up is one of the essential links in the chain of the diet-binge cycle?  And it’s one of the easiest links to break.  The minute you hear that hateful inner voice start criticizing you, you have my permission to tell it to sit down and shut up.  grin You are a beautiful human being and that means you deserve health, happiness, prosperity, and anything else wonderful that you can think up and the Universe can provide.

As for getting your “big butt” out there and walking ... I’m 48, 5’ 6” and just weighed in at 221 pounds this weekend.  Even though I’ve lost just over 50 pounds in the past couple of years, my butt is still certainly bigger than yours.  If I ever ran across anyone who had a problem with my big butt being out in public, I’d just smile sweetly at them and say, “Deal with it, darlin’!” and walk away!  cool smile

P.S.  I credit much of my “butt reduction” to the 100 Days Challenge.  I highly recommend that you set up a thread for yourself in that forum and just start working at it one day at a time.  You’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to keep going when you know you’ll get so much encouragement and support coming back at you.

I’m glad you’re here!

Y’all are so kind. Scott said I would have 5 immediate replies after saying hi.  Of course my problem is not starting projects....but seeing them through.
I will take all of your ideas to heart and listen with wide open ears!  I appreciate it. I’m anxious and excited all in one.

Happy Birthday Karen!

I have a hard time resisting potato chips too. I’m glad that you made the decision to start moving again, and you are taking steps to get some motivation (the forum and podcasts.) Since things seem to get in the way of your training after three weeks, maybe you could plan some small changes in your training to look forward to at 3 weeks. Mix up your routine a little, or change the thrust of your sessions. I walk my dog every morning, she never lets me forget-can you get out with yours?

Hi Karen!

I’m a little behind everyone in welcoming you.  Everyone here is so great (including you wink ).

I’m in the East Bay (Lafayette), and there are several others scattered all over the area.  You already have a walking buddy, your dog.  Consistency is the key so don’t worry if you miss a workout occasionally, just get right back up and get moving again.  I’m looking forward to hearing about your success.

Welcome Karen! I’m an all or nothing person too, but after posting here for a while, it became more and more a natural part of life. Even when I fall off the wagon now its just less exercise instead of none at all. That’s such a wonderful change. Stick around and you’ll have it happen to you, too!

THANKS to all of you, Bree, Paula, Jen, Donna, Judy, Shawn and Zookie (and anyone I might have missed).
I downloaded all of the Start Walking plan 30 day (????) I don’t know all the names yet and started today.  No time like the present. I figured if I waited till after the weekend, I would just have that much more to go.
I’m pretty excited. Scott seems so genuine and sincere.  There is something about him that has drawn me from the first moment I heard him!  I really don’t know where to go from here, there’s so many options. But I wish all of you the best. If you see me in the wrong place or out of turn, please just kindly direct me.

It’s fairly hard to get in the wrong spot around here. The forum titles are fairly self expanatory, and you can always send one of us a PM (personal message) if you want some guidance. But certainly don’t be shy. We’re not.

Hi Carrun,
Welcome.  Happy belated birthday to you.  About that three week then drama routine - I know that one well too.  I have noticed that a lot of folks begin to struggle a bit at that point, Scott touches upon that pattern throughout many of his pod casts.  Keep listening and keep moving.

Hello and welcome!

Here’s my goal to stop perfectionism/all-or-nothing-ness: donate just 10 minutes.  That’s it.  If that means walking the dog, or folding that pile of laundry, or whatever- just do 10 minutes (and stop exactly when that 10 minutes is up).  I guarantee that after doing that daily for two weeks, your self esteem will have shot through the roof enough to accomplish something.  Later, if you just tell yourself 10 minutes when you REALLY REALLY don’t want to go (insert activity here), you’ll have a much easier time either just a) to keep going until it’s finished, or b) let yourself not be mentally beat up if you quit at exactly 10 minutes.

I have a laundry issue (hate folding), so that’s how I get it done.  I just tell myself, “you only need to do 10 minutes, then you don’t have to worry about it until tomorrow.” Strangely enough, the laundry now gets folded pretty regularly (although I have a basket that’s been sitting for a week now, but I no longer beat myself up about it).

Keep in touch and see you around the forums (oh, and also, remember that 176 on 5’7” isn’t that bad.  I was 172 in January; am 159 now- same height.  When I started exercising, I was 192.  It’s taken me five years to get where I’m at, and a lot of it was falling down, getting back up, and trying again)!

Hi Karen,

I just saw this thread and thought I’d chime in as well (albeit a bit late).  I’ve got your problem, too.  For so very many things in life, I’m an all-or-nothing person.  It’s taken me a long time to realize that in real life, just like in the stories, it’s the slow-and-steady tortoise that wins out over the rush-and-rest hare, every time!  Carrie’s “only 10 minutes” tip is great.  Another one that works for me is to just pause and start again, wherever I am.  Even if I’ve been bad one day, I can always start where I am right now.  (Note: not tomorrow, right now.)

If you start a journal in the “Journal of Your Journey” forum, you’ll be amazed how much wonderful support and advice you’ll get.  I use my journal to record both successes and obstacles, and also when I just have stuff to say.  The moderators of that forum, and all the people who chime in from time to time, are among the nicest, most encouraging people you’ll ever meet.  I highly recommend it.

And remember, we’re all cheering for you!

Cheers,
Julie
