How often should you weigh yourself?

Hello everyone,

I know Scott says it isn’t so much about the weight, it’s about keeping moving. However, I have a weight loss goal, too.

So, how often should you weigh yourself? Once a week? Once a day (I know of people who do this).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I weigh myself everyday. But I use the weigh in on Sunday as my “official” weight. This helps me see what my body’s doing with the food and exercise I give it. And the official weigh in helps me to see the results more objectively. And I do my “homework” on Sunday, so it lets me know if I need to tweak something.

Like Bree, I weigh myself everyday (after my 16 ounces of water!).....it lets me know how the food I’ve eaten, and the exercise I’ve done effects that part of my health. I also check my body fat (on the same machine)....

On http://www.fitday.com, you can track your wieght, and it’s fun to see the graph going down....and when you hit plateau’s etc…

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

Hi

I don’t weigh myself everyday and I don’t keep track of it anywhere although I do know what I last weighed.  I think it all depend on if you can be obsessive about weighing.  If it will help you with your goals you should do it.  But remember that the body will fluctuate a lot over the course of the day.

At one time I was weighing every day, but I don’t do it as frequently any more.  Believe it or not, I usually step on the scale after a trip, vacation, or when I’ve been particularly bad with the eating, just to see what I need to do to get back to my maintenance mode.  And believe it or not, more often that not, I’m surprised that my weight usually hasn’t changed.  I guess that set points really work, and if you’re not stuck on a plateau while trying to lose weight, it can be a good thing.

Guess I’m the OCD one when it comes to weighing myself. I weigh myself twice daily, first thing in the morning and again in the evening. At 3 bills+ my weight can vary up to 5 pounds a day (!) I weigh myself so often just to track how my day to day choices are effecting my progress. When I’m consistently under a certain weight, then I consider that weigh lost. Mostly I use this as a motivator...I hate to see my weight go up, so as soon as I see it go up, I intensify everything to move in the other direction. Call it my “digital conscience”.

As always YMMV...so do what works for you.

I’ve had the same experience as Jeff. I weigh myself daily and found that I can easily fluctuate between 140 and 145 within a day or two. If I only weighed once a week, I’m pretty sure I would not get an accurate picture of my true weight progression. Right now I’m just trying to get my “low” reading below that 140 mark.

I think it’s a good idea to do the daily weigh-in for a week or so. It helped me to see what my range is, so I no longer get concerned about about single pounds or fractions of pounds.

After that last post, I thought I should also add that I’ve lost weight before (and kept it off for years) without even owning a scale. I just decided to eat healthy and the weight came off and it was obvious, LOL, I didn’t need a scale to tell me I was thin.

This time I decided to use a scale (and a tape measure) because I do have a numeric goal that I want to reach, and it motivates me to see the numbers move down.

But, a funny thing is happening… I’m barely losing, and my measurements have not changed, but my clothes fit better and people are asking me if I lost weight. I think it has something to do with my posture which may have improved since I’m doing lots of ab exercises. That’s the only thing I can think of!

I weigh myself two times a day.  The first time in the morning after I get up and then right before I go to bed.  I use this as a guide to see how my body is doing.  I make it fun and enjoyable for myself too!!!  I don’t look it at as “Oh no I am going to weigh myself again.” I have been known during the weekend not to weight myself at all, but then I will start back into it on Monday again.

Here is to moving,

Thank you for your awesome responses. First off I need a new scale. The one I have is a really old dial scale that doesn’t work very well. The “zero” is at 10 pounds because otherwise it’s 10 pounds less than the Dr.’s scale.

At the same time, I don’t want to focus too much on the numbers, but on feeling good and move move moving!

Thanks for the advice, and Fat Jeff, what does YMMV mean? I haven’t seen that one before. smile Your mind may vary? Heh.

I’ve gone with the daily weigh in, the first thing each am.  Once a week is my “offical” weight for tracking, but the daily lets me know where I am.  I heard about some research that the successful weight losers (who take it off and keep it off) weigh once a day.  grin

I weigh myself daily before anything but the bathroom… that along with my diary where I keep track of my eating habits allows me to see how different foods affect my progress.  It is all realitive.  Weigh yourself at the same time every day every week or even every month.  I write the results down so I can keep track of my goodness or badness.

The one place I do not ever ever ever step on the scale is while visiting my girlfriend in Florida.  Her scale says I’m almost 10 pounds lighter.  It’s like giving me a license to eat or drink anything and everything while on vacation.  Not a good idea.  rolleyes

I was just going to add that my weigh seems to fluctuate during hot, humid weather.  I can fluctuate as much as 5 lbs in hot weather.  Could that be because I’m holding my water in my system?
