How do you get rid of a “beer Belly”, besides just losing weight?  I have 40 pounds to lose, and i am afraid that after i lose that weight , i will still have a belly.  will ab excercises help?

Unfortunately there is a myth about “Spot reduction"-you can to lots of crunches to build up those abdominal muscles but still need to burn off the fat (some good cardio does this).  If you continue core exercises along with cardio and a good diet, that tummy will flatten.  Belly fat just takes a bit (to put nicely) longer to lose.

Being fat is hard. Losing weight is hard. Maintaining weight loss is hard. Pick your hard.

As always, Julie is right on the spot with her answer....

The long slow burn will help with the fat.....(and 40 lbs should take you about a year or so).  After I lost 60 lbs.....I still have extra ‘skin’, but as I lose more body fat, that too tones up....but like Julie said....it does take time, but look at it as a lifetime, because it must have taken time to aquire that.

Also, less beer helps!

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

Yep less beer and more water is a great start to losing that beer belly!!  Also look at the kind of foods you are eating as well.  That beer belly may be there due to your food choices.  Took a good look at what you are eating and see if you can make some changes there too!!  And as the others have said some cardio along with some ab work will do wonders.  It may take some time, but in due time you will have a great looking ab section.  Keep that picture in mind and that will become your new reality.  Have some fun along the way with this as well!!

Here is to healthy living,

You have great suggestions already, less beer, more water, long slow burn to get rid of the excess body fat, and lots of core ab exercises to tighten those muscles and hold it all in.

It will take time, but in a year, you’ll still be a year older, why not be a year older with great abs.
