The main meal in the cafeteria today was macaroni and cheese.  I find it a bit greasy, so I opted out and went for a big salad topped with tuna, and some sweet potatoes on the side.  As I was getting my salad, I saw someone come up to the salad bar and sprinkle grated cheddar cheese ON TOP of his macaroni and cheese.

It was one of those double-take moments.  I mean, doesn’t macaroni and cheese mean you’re already getting the cheese?

Hi Julie,
Its good that you’re noticing an unhealthy habit b/c it can add to your knowledge of eating nutriciously. But don’t forget there is always two sides to every story. Who knows? This could have been the person’s treat for the week because they have a weak spot for cheese. He might have eaten less calories earlier in the day to compensate for the extra cheese. I know when I let myself have a treat after being good for a while I also add extra cheese to my mac n’ cheese (what can I say? I love cheese!). Even though we are all learning about healthier eating habits, we should remember not to be too quick to judge other’s food habits. It’s something I find myself doing too. I know that when I started being more conscious and informed about eating healthy I found myself making comments about what my friends and family ate, which of course they did not like all the time. But of course we want to help the people we love eat better, but it should be done carefully so as not to put them off. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this situation? How can we help others reach their “aha! moment” without sounding like a reprimanding teacher?
