Doc: Exercise Pumps Up Brain Cells

Activity Could Help With Depression

POSTED: 9:52 am EDT June 29, 2007
UPDATED: 10:05 am EDT June 29, 2007
Exercise has been show to lift the moods of people with depression, and a Swedish researcher said that it is because the activity stimulates the production of new brain cells.
Astrin Bjornebekk said that both antidepressants and exercise cause the new formations in areas of the brain responsible for memory and learning.
She said that exercise could therefore be an effective form of treatment for depression, especially when used along with medications.
The experiments that led to Bjornebekk’s conclusions were performed on rats. Sometimes, results seen in animals do not translate directly to people.

Certainly another good reason to keep moving… not that I think we will find any to make us stop moving LOL

I know here in Australia, they encourage mums with mild post natal depression to get out and go for a walk every day as part of their treatment. It always helps clears my brain, that’s for sure.

That article makes sense!!!  When I had my baby, they told me to exercise afterwards just for the mental effects.....
