I recently started subscribing to Prevention magazine and like it a lot.  Sometimes I get tired of seeing their “quick” ways to flatten your belly or lose weight for the summer, etc.  I’m wondering what types of magazines are good for those of us that are dedicated to fitness.  What do you read?

Hi Gina,

I don’t subscribe to any because of the subscription curse (whenever I’ve taken one out, the mag has gone bust or to trash LOL ) so I tend to buy after a flick through. I’m most like to buy Yoga mags because I get more understanding of the pose discussed and I actually find them calming, if that’s possible!!

I totally agree with you on the ‘quick fix’ thing. If those ideas really worked, then the diet industry would go broke.

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

The all-time best fitness magazine (for ladies especially) is Fitness RX for Women....it is rare to have a magazine that isn’t loaded with cheesy advertisements but this one does it. It features plenty of great little articles on health, beauty, fitness, nutrition research etc.  It also features some great workouts-I love it!!!!!!  Check it out!

I have a subscription to Men’s Health (it the magazine that helped me lose 50 lbs before I put it back on) and to Mountain Bike Action. I think they have some great tips and tricks and work well for me.

Cheers.

Run a marathon and I guarantee this Christmas someone will get you a subscription to Runners World. I’ve been getting it for about 4 years and have yet to pay for an issue. There are some tidbits of new information in each issue but generally they try to reinvent the wheel every month. I do like that they review a different city every month and give the best 3 or 4 places to run in that city as well as a brief discription of each course. Makes it nice when you travel.

i actually kind of like the Weight watchers magazine, even though I’m not a member.  It has lots of success stories, and none of them revolve around “I took this pill and *poof* lost 20 lbs in an hour...”

No magazines for me. I can’t stand the biased reporting towards advertisers… and the constant ads. Over the years I have let my subs go for all fitness, car and gun mags. If I see one on the rack that looks really good I’ll sometimes pick up a Mens Health or Flex. I saw one at the docs office the other day that I really liked, but can’t remember what it was. Oh well, no loss. smile

I subscribe to Self magazine - it tends to be a bit cheesy sometimes, but their excercises are sound and it gives me some good ideas.
