Do you guys know that Elvis song “A Little Less Conversation a Little More Action”? I’m talking about the remix that was done a few years ago. I have that in the rotation and whenever it comes on I always pick up the pace. Especially right after the part where he says

“Come on, come on
Don’t procrastinate, don’t articulate
Girl it’s getting late, gettin’ upset waitin’ around”

OK, I’m a geek.

Well now that I have my MP3 player, I can list some of mine.

“Brainiac"-Chevelle
[Very angry, and actually faster than Chevelle’s usual stuff.]

“Get Some"-Chevelle
[This one always gets my heart pumping really well.]

“Breach Birth"-Chevelle
[OMG!!!!]

“Family System"-Chevelle
[I strongly relate to this, having grown up with a brother only two years older than me. But the song gives me a lot of energy and releases anger very nicely.]

Okay I’m gonna stop with the Chevelle songs now, I promise!

“Wide Awake"-Audioslave
[This song kinda MAKES me angry, and that can give me a big boost of energy.]

“Drunks, Lovers, Sinners and Saints"-Alexisonfire
[Fast and furious, very high energy, as with most Alexis material

“This Could Be Anywhere In The World"-Alexisonfire
[OMG!!!!]

“We Are The End"-Alexisonfire
[Very very fast, great drum beat, and the whole thing just has a really energizing sound to me]

“Get Fighted"-Alexisonfire
[Really inspiring and empowering message wrapped in a really fast drum beat and obviously amazing vocals]

By Alexis, I’d also add “Accidents”, fantastic energy about that song. And the lyrics are great.

“A Favor House Atlantic"-Coheed & Cambria
[Straightforward for these guys, and super fast. So it’s good for increasing speed.]

“Fire Woman"-The Cult
[Oh man, this one gives me goosebumps every single time I hear it, without fail. Amazing amazing energy.]

“There And Back Again"-Daughtry
[Great hard rock song. This gives me a lot of power.]

“Decided To Break It"-Marianas Trench
[Really nice, energetic song.]

“Just Stop"-Disturbed
[Wow WOW WOW.]

“Stricken"-Disturbed
[I find this one always gives me a boost. OW! AH! AH! AH! OW!]

“Sacred Lie"-Disturbed
[Powerful lyrics, with awesome speed and vocal style.]

“Famous Last Words"-My Chemical Romance
[I AM NOT AFRAID TO KEEP ON LIVING! I AM NOT AFRAID TO WALK THIS WORLD ALONE!]

“This Is How I Disappear"-My Chemical Romance
[WOW!]

“I Caught Fire"-The Used
[Great guitar part in the beginning. Awesome emo song that makes me wanna jump around and pretend I can play an electric!]

“A Box Full Of Sharp Objects"-The Used
[Off of their first album. Pretty raw sounding(like a lot of emo stuff), amazing screaming by Bert McCracken. One of my favorite rock songs.]

“Killing In The Name"-RATM
[OMG!!!!]

“Freedom"-RATM
[ANGER IS A GIFT. COME ONNNNNN!!!!!!!!! k I think I made my point, haha.]

“Vietnow"-RATM
[Really catchy, amazing lyrics, with an appropriate dose of anger.]

“Know Your Enemy”
[Obviously I wasn’t gonna forget that one. Little Maynard James Keenan in there too, for any Tool or APC fans out there.]

“Calm Like A Bomb”
[OMG!!!! Nothing else can be said.]

“Sleep Now In The Fire"(maybe with a little “Bulls on Parade” as an awesome intro, like the Audioslave concerts)
[I’ve thought about mixing those two songs into eachother or something. But “Sleep Now In The Fire” is one of the stronger tracks on Battle Of Los Angeles, it helps ratchet up the speed.]

“The Pot"-Tool
[Words cannot describe.]

“Intolerance"-Tool
[Nice and angry, as was commonplace on Tool’s earlier work]

“Eulogy"-Tool
[Amazing buildup, good for warming up before getting right into it.]

“That Song"-Big Wreck
[Of course!]

“Screaming"-Tupelo Honey
[I have the live Band of the Month set they did for SONiC in Edmonton.]

Today’s song

Paperthin Hymn
Anberlin…

Don’t know why, I just like that song.

-Dave

Because it’s a great song!  tongue wink

Why: Because you just can’t stop grooving to the tune. Most of Rage’s music is pretty powerful. Zack de la Rocha rules!!!!! I miss him!!!! Where did you go, Zack?

Apparently he’s done some unreleased work, but most recently(and notably) he’s played some shows with Tim, Tom, and Brad. I believe they are getting back together, but they aren’t saying anything other than “we currently have no other shows scheduled.”

Interesting. Thanks for that info. It would be great if they came to the North East if they do indeed tour but that is wishful thinking. I heard that RAGE is doing a reunion show in southern CA with several other artsts very soon if not just recently but Zack is not with them for the reunion. My understanding of Zack is that he’s not into the commercialization of his work and that’s why he disappeared when RAGE became so popular. He’s not a sell-out. What a typical artist! I still love his music. It’s very powerful and thought provoking.

Brandon,
You mention a lot of songs and bands I have never heard of.  Just curious what type of style music would you clasify those bands as.  I am always open to listening to interesting new bands that I have never heard of, especially if the music has a good beat to it that will add to my workouts.  Would this be classified as either metal, hard rock, or industrial??  Ok you need to educate me on this one a little bit.  If I have time today maybe I will try to see if these bands have websites where I can check out their stuff.  Well thanks in advance for any help you can provide on these bands.

Brandon… I like your list of music… especially RRRRRRAGE!!!! (Yes, I am a suburban, yuppie, family man who loves Rage Against the Machine! grin ) I just never gotten into Tool’s music… I don’t know why.

Actually, I have gotten into so much alternative rock in the past few years and that has expanded my musical horizons immensely. Based on the type of music you listen to, Brandon, I highly recommend Dinosaur, Jr… an amazing hard edge indie rock band who peaked in the 90’s. I also recommend a harder edge band called Fugazi who is more punk… but definitely more of a melodious punk band (with amazing lyrics).

Love this thread Dave.  I have very eclectic taste in music.  Most of the time I listen to what matches the mood but when I exercise or get ready to go to the gym I try to listen to must that gets me excited to move.  Here are a few that I like just for that purpose:

Now, don’t laugh!

Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous
RuPaul
Dance
It’s got a techno beat and makes me feel SEXAY (that’s for you Shawn)

Jump Around
House of Pain
Hip Hop
Just cause it’s fun and makes me wanna jump around

Tell M “Bout it”
Joss Stone
Pop
funky and fun

Wonderful Night
Fatboy Slim
Pop
Cause I just like it

Just a note...I have “My Humps” on the iPod too.  It must be a chick thing Dave.  “Get you love drunk off my humps..lovely little lady lumps...”

Right on, Tim!

I’ll check out those bands, thanks!

Scooby

Although I will listen to almost anything, my list is primarily made up of bands that would classify as rock, or subgenres thereof. But to be more specific:

Alexisonfire: “Post Hardcore Screamo” is what they are classifed as. That genre kind of bred out of Punk. Sometimes associated with Emo. Generally Alexisonfire relies on a lot of hooks, speed(especially on their new album).

Audioslave: I’m sure you’re familiar, mostly straight Hard Rock.

Chevelle: Alternative Metal/Hard Rock. Crunchy guitars, a lot of screaming(though the vocalist sings “normally” most of the time), and generally fairly heavy in general. Yet very focused on melody, which is what’s so great about them, I find.

Coheed & Cambria: My personal favorite band. They’re a Progressive Rock band with Emo elements. They kind of do a bit of everything, very unpredictable. You’ll hear Metal in there sometimes aswell. It’s one of those bands that doesn’t really fit very well into one classification.

The Cult: Most have heard of them, just a goth rock band that was big in the 80’s(recording a new album right now).

Tupelo Honey: I don’t believe they have a record deal yet, but they’re a really fantastic Rock band out of Edmonton here in Canada. Amazing vocalist.
Marianas Trench: Emo/Pop Rock/Punk style band out of Canada.

My Chemical Romance: Although they sort of disown the idea, they are considered by some as Emo. But basically they’re a Pop/Rock band. A lot of hooks on their new record, though I couldn’t speak much to their past work since I don’t own any of it.

The Used: Alternative Rock/Emo. Successful, but to it’s audience(like most emo). Most people I know either do, or would hate their work. That’s similar to the situation with MCR, Marianas Trench, and Alexisonfire. Observe(and beware! Haha): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGE5r0joz3I&mode;=related&search;=

Tool: Progressive Rock, a lot of experimentation. Super artsy. But when they do more straightfoward stuff, they’re amazing.

And I’m sure you know Rage Against the Machine. Rap/Rock, pretty evolutionary. I’m not a huge fan of their last two original works, but they have some great tracks on them. Mainly I’m a fan of their first album, which was a lot funkier and bass driven. A lot less “noise-making” by Morello, too. I think he has a tendancy to over-do it on their later work.

All of these bands have work on YouTube, and they all have websites.

Tim, I saw Fugazi live! Tim you would probably like Bad Religeon

I saw Bad Religion live, Shawn. (Actually, I saw them when they opened for Pearl Jam in 1995.) I have never been a huge punk fan… but I do hear their stuff from time to time and it’s all right. I should give them another chance.

Brandon… you are ANALytical about music like I am!! I love progressive style rock, I should check out Coheed and Cambria. I have heard them before but would need to refamiliarize myself with them. Speaking of progressive rock… check out Silversun Pickups and Porcupine Tree. (We’ve got a vicious circle of bands being suggested, don’t we?)

Oh yes, love myself some Porcupine Tree(good for them on signing with Roadrunner). Though right now I only have In Absentia. I need Deadwing and Fear Of A Blank Planet, their last and latest albums. Obviously they have a ton of earlier work that I need to look into aswell.

Get ready for some diverse stuff with Coheed. I think their best work is probably their first album(but it’s all amazing), which is more of a focused, straightforward sound. A little less “produced”, too. Which kind of adds to the music in a different(not better, just different) way. But their second and third albums are awesome and definitely take on different styles(and mix things up a lot).

I’ll check out Silversun Pickups!

Oh yeah......Note: Those bands I refer to as being “emo"-aren’t strictly in a genre sense, but they have elements of that and sort of appeal to that whole scene. If we’re talking “real"(or straight) emotive hardcore, that’s bands like Senses Fail, Hawthorne Heights etc etc. But “emo” really isn’t very well defined as a specific genre of music. Especially not these days. So I’m loose with the term.

Awesome music discussion guys!!!

My power song today was

Mi Swing Es Tropical
Quantic & Nickodemus…

Yes its on the new iPod commercial. But it just has that ‘Summer’ mood.
Ill probably get sick of it in the next month or so… AHAHA!

I don’t think I mentioned this, but I find myself listening to Tiesto’s Club Life podcast during my workouts. Yes it’s electro-dance music… but great beats and keeps the mood goin!

Brandon - Ill go to youtube and check a lot of those artists out… sounds AWESOME! I, however, refuse to listen to anything by Fall Out Boy. No offense, but *cringe*.  tongue wink
