We all know that music brings a lot to our lives. It motivates us. Soothes us. Sometimes it makes us feel happy, or even angry. It keeps us company when we’re alone, or brings us together with friends and family. The point is, music is such an important part of our lives - and workout music is no different.

So, what’s a Power Song? I’m thinking it’s that special song that gives that extra kick on final leg on the treadmill, eliptical, or bike. It could be a song that brings you through your cool-off period. Or it could be that song that motivates you to give it all you got to get that extra rep.

Fact is, if you listen to music, you should have at least one song in your library that will get you through the toughest point in your workout, and would give you enough, ahem, power which might even surprise you.

So, what’s YOUR Power Song? We all have different tastes so it could be any artist, and any genre. It could even be the birds chirping in the forest. What’s motivating you NOW?

This is meant to be an open thread for you to add whatever song you like, whenever you want.

I’m guessing it should be in this kind of format (or any other format you choose)

{Artist}
{Song}
{Genre}
{And why it’s your Power Song that day, week, month, even year}

This could even be an interesting MTM community iMix on iTunes.

And....GO!

Ill take the plunge on the first post.

My power song for today was

Tiêsto
Adagio for Strings
Electronic/House/Trance

Why? Because it had that perfect beat and rhythm to get me through my cardio warmup.  The timing was perfect, and was long enough so I didn’t have to worry about another song mixing the flow. I dont usually listen to electronic music, but this song makes it perfect for getting a solid pace and gives you that natural ‘high’ and sense of accomplishment at the end of the song.

Hi Dave,

Great thread!
My power song for today (and most days)

Tom Petty
Won’t Back Down

Well, this song makes me stand up...take a step...and repeat. It just has that effect on me!

I have a couple, my workouts are really long LOL

For ellipticrack speed bursts

I like this song because of the super fast beat and is very agressive.
You
Bad Religeon
Punk

Has a nice steady beat,fast but not to fast. I also like the fact the whole song is done with percussion.
Way of the Drum
Tsuchie
Eectronic/hip hop

Weigt training

Song starts with traditional Brazillan Capoeira music and builds into a really heavy tune.
Riot Starter
Soulfly
metal

The song is 6 minutes long, slow and driving but very heavy at the same time.
Mammut
UFO Mammut
Doom/Sludge meatal

Fun thread, Dave!  grin

I’ve got a couple that never fail to get me to increase the speed on the treadmill:

Katrina & the Waves
Walking on Sunshine
Pop

This song is pure “pop” with a good beat that gets me walking at about 2.8 mph (which is a pretty brisk pace for my not-so-long legs) and the lyrics are positive and happy.

On my iPod this morning was my other favorite “power song”:

Van Halen
Jump
Rock

This song has a fantastic beat to it (again, it gets me going about 2.8 mph) and the opening lyrics can’t help but get me going ("I get up, and nothing gets me down").

I really like this topic, Dave!

The Pixies
“River Euphrates”
Alternative/Indie Rock
This is the power song that helps me get through the last couple of minutes of a sprint on the treadmill… it has a continuous rhythm and tempo thoughout the song (with different elements incorporated throughout the song) that replicates the running steps. It is also one of my favorite songs and puts me in the “zone” and not think about the timer.

I love this thread! Here is my power song. I love to play this when I’m really going hard on the cardio. You HAVE to move!

Artist: Rage Against The Machine
Song: Renegades of Funk
Genre: Metal
Why: Because you just can’t stop grooving to the tune. Most of Rage’s music is pretty powerful. Zack de la Rocha rules!!!!! I miss him!!!! Where did you go, Zack?

I don’t need to be angry for Rage. They just kick a$$!
How about Bulls on Parade, Bombtrack, Guerilla Radio, Pistol Grip Pump. Now it’s in my head I gotta play it.
Another group that gets me grooving is Saliva. The songs of choice lately are: Click Click Boom and Ladies and Gentlemen “Ladies and Gentlemen please............”

Cool thread! I would have to say that my ultimate power song is:

I don’t know the official title but I have it on my iPod as “Gears of War Theme” (Xbox video game).
Its off the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack.
As for genre, it would have to be classical.

I find this particular piece of music very energetic. It pumps me up for anything and it allows me to be incredibly focused when I listen to it. It draws out the energy I have and I absolutely love it.

I totally agree with you pookabead66. Rage was cool, especially with those unmistakable vocals. To get my fix, I like to listen to Audioslave to get Tom Morelo’s unique guitar again. Always puts me in a good mood.

Cheers,
