Good luck with your balancing act.

Have you considered eating more meals rather than skipping meal? Just make the “meals” healthier.

My husband has a hard time eating at work because he often can’t take a break. He takes two meals to heat up but often postpones eating for hours past normal mealtimes. He was then grabbing a bagel or crossiant (sp?) to fill in with. Or he skipped the meals and came home famished and became a human vacuum cleaner after 9:15. Now he’s taking baggies of baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, radishes, and an apple or two with him and eating them throughout the day. He eats less after 9:15 and his staff say he is a lot easier to work with.

Would something like the above work for you?

Great suggestion Joan! We order so much junk food for clients and other guests here that temptation was rife so now we order a weekly delivery of fruit and put it near our desks so that it’s the most convenient snack choice.

Keep up the great work. You are building habits, it takes time and a few bumps along the way are to be expected.

Judd,

Hello from a fellow newbie! It sounds like you are well on your way towards achieving your fitness goals, but I’m surprised you don’t get all your cardio in just trying to keep up with your boys! Seriously, I am sure your sons are your biggest fans, and would love to see their father achieving his personal fitness goals. Congratulations on getting 10% of the way through your hundred days, and I’ll see you at the finish line! (well, six days after you, anyway. I’m only on Day 4!)

Best of luck,
Verlin

Nice to meet you Verlin - from one newbie to another. Good luck on your challenge as well. Thanks too to Joan, Bree and everyone. I do try the apple at work thing - bring a whole bag from home. I must admit we do have the Costco 100 cal pack box as a snack - I limit myself to one or 2 (at different times per day) that has been working pretty well with the apples. I am surprisingly doing pretty well with the one diet pop a day - drinking even more water now that I limit the pops. I do drink some of those crystal light packets that go in your bottle of water. They even make a “Crystal Light Hydration” with electrolites and “Crystal Light Energy” with caffeine. Have not bought the Energy - get enough caffeine with Starbucks in the AM. Just the regular CL is good for me. But I drink plenty of water - really not an issue for me especially since the diet pops are down to 1 a day max. Joan I will try to work in the veggies too - thanks.

Day 11 was pretty standard for me - I like the comfort of my routine during the week - alarm goes off and I go down and get it done - 5:15 to 6:15 elliptical; shower then breakfast with the family they we all go our ways and I am at work by 7:30.

Today is day 12 - and I did plan ahead - 13 year old son is going to Cincinnati with my wife for a basketball tournament (the last of the year - WHEW) and 10 year old is in soccer tourney locally. I am working out in the evenings for the next 3 days - then Tuesday (a day off work) I will work out mid day then back to my routine Wednesday.

Thats the plan - will let you know how it goes.

Thanks,
Judd

Judd have you found out what time of day you like to workout best at?  I am a creature of habit, I need to workout at the same time everyday!!!!  I have tried the early morning workouts but unlike all the folks on here, I never get a good workout first thing in the morning.

My two cents.....

I love to work out anytime!, but morning just seems to fit my schedule right now....

My ideal day would be to wake up.....have a small breakfast....(some fruit, yogurt) and read for about 20 minutes…

Then do some yoga.......work in the yard a while......(maybe wash Fuji, my bike LOL)....

About 10:00 am - stretch a little, then...go for a nice swim, bike or run (notice the order).......

come home shower or take a bath.....go out to lunch with my bride, after walk along the beach.....

Go surfing for a bit, then home to do a few more things around the house

In the early afternoon, go get a massage, and home to watch the sunset while BBQing with friends....

Hey....that’s what I’m going to do today!!!  (well almost, I might not be able to fit in the surfing!)

oh shoot shut eye I have to go to work most days, but this sounds pretty nice....

After dinner, and nice walk in the nieghborhood and some stretching to end the day!

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

To tri is to risk failure, not to tri is to guarantee it!

Tom - I would be up for that kind of day for sure - is the swim in the ocean or the pool?? Enjoy your day today - I will think of you.

Julie - I really like the 5:15 AM thing - once I get there - the getting up thing at 5 is still a little tough! But I do not like missing those few minutes of family time in the AM standing around the island in the kitchen. Funny - yesterday and today - my internal clock woke me up at 4:55 - worked out yesterday, today - showered, helped by wife pack for Cincy - then at work by 6:50 on the weekends. So I will work out tonight after work.

Mondays are usually my day off - Tuesday this week with the Monday holiday.

Rainy in Cleveland today so the golfers are a little sour ......

Well - Day 12 did NOT go as planned - I gave a late unscheduled golf lesson about 6, had to re-shaft a broken driver and make a few calls to get a caddy for someone. By the time I got home and considered my workout, it was 8 PM (late for me) put in a DiGorgno Thin Wheat Crust pizza, ate some and went to bed about 9:15. So Day 12 became my second off day this week.

I am learning that for me to do this - I just HAVE to do it first thing in the AM - especially so that I know I got it in - I just feel better about myself all day.

Day 13 a work day for me—Sunday I did wake at 5 AM and got in 45 minutes on the Elliptical and got to work at 6:50 AM. It was not my hour - but I had to pack younger son’s soccer uniform (that I also washed) for his tournament soccer game at 10 AM - he spent the night at a friends house so he did not have to come to work with me that early.

I left work, picked him up - got to see a 5-2 soccer victory - brought him back to the course where I work, gave him a little golf lesson and our sitter picked him up at 1 so I could stay at work for the afternoon and evening. Older son went 2-1 at an AAU basketball tourney in Cincinnati and my wife (who took him to the tourney) and son are on the way home.

I hope to see them tonight before I fall asleep in my chair!

Livin’ the Dream!!..... and thankful the boys are healthy and happy enough to do so. But we usually sleep pretty well.

Funny how some days get well...out of our control.  I too like you HAVE to have my workout at a certain time.  I tend to get cranky if my day gets a bit jilted.  Nobody likes a cranky Zookie....it is ugly.  So the golfers turned sour in the rain heh?  Are they related to the Wicked Witch??  Hope you enjoy your Memorial day, let this be your healthiest Memorial Day yet!!!!

Finding the workout time that best fits your life is a huge battle in the weight loss war. For me, it’s midmorning or later. Have a great rest of the weekend!

It looks like early morning is best for you because of the unpredictability of the rest of the day. It’s a good thing your body seems to agree with that.

Thanks Joan - you are right - I did not think that I would be able to workout Sunday and Monday AM’s of this week and I got up and got it done after learning from Saturday and just getting it done early on ANY work day.

Week 2 stats
5 workouts
5 hours and 11 minutes
2700 calories

Week 3 begins with Day 14 - while a holiday - was a regular work day and thus a regular workout day for me with my hour on the elliptical at 5:15 AM (I watched the Sportcenter of the Cavaliers first victory over the Pistons - YEA!) and cranked my Ipod. With no Daily Boost and I already listed to the MTM Show and others at least one time if not two - I just loaded up the music today - really was fun.

Looking forward to a day off (from work) tomorrow and a mid day workout at the gym rather than the Elliptical at home. It is a BEAUTIFUL day in Cleveland today after a cloudy and rainy Saturday and Sunday - the Sun and 76 degrees gets most of the members I work for in a great mood. It is amazing that the weather and how well people play golf has such a tremendous effect on the golfers at our course!!

Maybe they should listen to Scott and remember that feeling good is a choice.

I do plan to get caught up on some of the threads of all of you tomorrow - but thanks for all your consistent support - I am really beginning to feel much more fit - got into pants today that I have not worn since last June (and they were not comfortable then - but they are now.) And one of our members noticed that my XXL golf shirt was hanging off me - so that helps the motivation as well.

I am also starting to view my hour on the elliptical as “my time” - the Long Slow Burn is awesome in that I am not panting so hard that I can’t think of anything else - can think of wife, kids. work. Still need to do my homework tomorrow as well.

Hope you had a rewarding Memorial Day!!

Finally - 2 glorious days back to back in NE Ohio.

I actually had a great workout today - spent 90 minutes on the Arc Machine (close cousin to the Elliptical) for the first time - kept my HR at an average of 132. I was a little like a weeble when I got off - but really feel good.

Am off work today after the long holiday weekend - so back at it at 5:15 tomorrow.

I investigated some exercise classes and may do something with a trainer - ready to start some light weights to help - but the LSB is working well for me.

Ironically - I have probably never been going through more stress personally with a lot of issues - and that is making me more determined to get the workouts in - where in the past I used it as an excuse to let them go.

Some clicks are even better than others - why didn’t I do this all along? I’ve got about 234 reasons, I guess.

I know that feeling! The “just drained enough” feeling. I used to get that after a good session on the treadmill, and I’ve been missing it for a few years. Glad to be reminded of it. Hope all is going well with your 100 days!

Judd… sorry to hear about the stress going on in your life… but one of the “clicks” I have had is realizing that being stressed is a reason to exercise. Just like how being tired is a reason to exercise. A lot of people use these two factors as an excuse to not exercise. Finally, I am sure you feel better after a workout, whatever your emotions may be.

One more thing… I also work out at the same time of day (like Julie) and start to get antsy and cranky if something is preventing me from getting my workout in. I also do my workouts at 7:00 or 7:30 PM (2:00 PM or so on Sundays)… so I understand how a workout first thing in the morning makes it less likely that something else will impede your scheduled workout.

Then again… I just have refused up to this point to do an early morning workout. From my viewpoint, the early evening workout (after dinner) is best.

Judd, I agree. My mood is definitely better when I exercise.

So how often are you now going to wear those pants that are a sign of your success??? Feel good every time you put them on and eventually they’ll be too big.

Sounds like you’re figuring things out.  Exercise is a major stress reducer.

Whoa!

I just bought an Arc Trainer last month, and so far, the longest I’ve been on the beast is 17 minutes.  It may not help that I get on after a long workout on the rowing machine, but once I hit my rowing goal, I hope to tame the beast like you seem to have managed.

Great job!!!
