Smell is such an important trigger of good memories...home baked cookies spring to mind! Certain aromas can have a calming effect on us as well.
I love the smell of sandalwood. I find it exotic and interesting. I also like lavendar because it is something I used to use when I had my babies. Lavendar reminds me of facials and massages..an instantly relaxing memory if ever there was one! The aroma of coffee beans is usually a trigger for me of conversations with friends.
So, do you have a favourite aroma? And do you know why it is a fave?
There are lots of triggers - the smell of fresh brewed coffee at home always starts me moving for the day. I almost always set it up the night before and start the timer so I can smell the coffee before I even get up and out of bed. Bring me coffee in bed and I’ll love you forever.
Lilacs in the spring - brings back memories of living in New England - it meant that winter was over - time to put away the skies and get ready for summer. Every Spring, I bring fresh cut lilacs into the house, sneeze a few times and enjoy the scent.
The are after a thunderstorm when the air smells clean and fresh.
Unfortunately, I have almost no sense of smell. I’ve actually had this tested, and the best anyone has been able to tell me is that it’s due to residual cat allergies (I’m very, very allergic to cats).
That said, I’ve always loved the smell of vanilla. It’s an instant calmer for me. (Even if I *do* need to put my nose right into it to smell it.)
For me, it would have to be the smell of freshly cut grass. It signifies the beginning of summer for me, which means I get to crack out my bike, inlines and run outside. I also like the smell of sandlewood. I have incense of that smell that I use to meditate.
I love citrus scents, mango, tangerine, orange, etc, yummy.
My fav is probably apple. Just palin apple or apple pie. Remidns me of picking apple when I was a kid.
I think I’ll pass on the lavendar on the nose. I had an icky allergic reaction to some lavendar bubble bath and have since avoided anything lavendar.
All this sweet scent talk make me want to pour a bubble bath with some mango bath salts. Yummy
Your comment about lavendar reminded me of a funny experience I had a few years ago.
I was out with friends and one lady offerred me a taste of her drink because I said I’d never had one of that particular mix. When she passed it over, I caught the smell and it reminded me of one of my favourite great aunts. It was gin and tonic. Now I know why that aunt was so much fun!!
If you have a lavender plant, try cutting off the leaves into small pieces. Put the lavender on a saucer. Then put the saucer on a warming plate (or on a warm setting on your oven - make sure it doesn’t get too hot). It will make your whole house smell wonderful for hours. And it’s inexpensive.
Lavender plants are a hardy outdoor plants in many regions of the country.
Hmmm, that’s good advice! I had a row of lavendar plants when we lived in Melbourne but haven’t planted any up here. Maybe that would make a nice weekend project.
On a street nearby me there is a bread factory, and sometimes if I’m out very early or very late I can catch the smell of bread! If it weren’t for all the cars the whole street would probably smell like it. I love the smell and it makes me want to buy a breadmaker just so I can create the smell in my own apartment
I also love lavendar smell, probably something passed on to me from my mom and grandma.
I love the smell of rain, freshly cut grass (especially if it starts to sprinkle as soon as your done mowing), lilacs (had a lilac bush growing under my window when I was a teen), and lavender. And the smell of my children, but my favorite is the smell of my hubby—instant calm, peace, and joy.
I like the smell of the woods. Not just the pine trees either. The needles on the ground, bark on the trees. When I was in the marines we would spend alot of time in the woods. Even the dirt smelled clean.
I don’t smoke a pipe but I love the smell of them. Whenever I smell a pipe I think of fishing with my grandpa, dad and uncle Ron. Those were some fun times.
