Eileen, my elbow isn’t any better, but I was reminded that my shoulder felt this way a couple of years ago and it took forever to feel better. I don’t know if the exercise hindered my progress or assisted it. Anyway, I decided to stop my moping and just get back to work. We’ll see what happens. Today I could only manage 2 sets. I feel pretty weak today. We’ll see…
Usually elbow pain is caused by inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis) as they pass around the elbow joint. Have you thought about using a support band like you see on tennis players with Tennis Elbow. It helps keep the tendons aligned and gives them a little support. You could try wearing that when you work out, and even during the day when you are moving around.
Hope you feel better and good luck with your workouts.
Deb, it’s good to have you back with us. When I had tennis elbow (a life-time ago), I used the type of band that Paula describes and it definitely helped. I gave up the tennis but used the band when gardening, another activity that’s hard on the elbow.
I use straps to support my knees now and they seem to help alot even if they do look a bit funny under my pants. You just have to find a way to train around your injury and not through it. You want to take it easy on the elbow while still being active. Have you been working in other forms of exercise along with your new kettlebell passion? Mixing it up will give your body some vairety and give the elbow time to recover between bouts of more stressful exercise.
Thanks for all the great info guys! It’s always nice to have a name to attach to the pain, makes googling a lot easier! I’ll do some research and look into those bands. Thanks.
I have been dreading getting back on the treadmill, although I always planned on going back to it after I got over the initial learning curve of the kettlebell. I haven’t given my knees a thought for, what, a month now? It was almost like I was normal or something. But 3 minutes on the treadmill reminded me of them quite effectively. And I have never been able to get my heart rate up very high on the treadmill because of my knees. And I feel it is an awful lot of effort for the results I get at that speed. And besides, as my treadmill so kindly tells me, a half hour burned up a whole 104 calories...sigh… But, in an effort to spread out the stress and resulting pain, perhaps alternating knee/elbow will be better in the long run. We’ll see… Thanks guys! I appreciate your input.
Sorry to hear your knees aren’t healed. That’s a bummer. Does walking outside hurt as much? You may also want to get the book Chi Walking, it’s a wonderful book and helps you to walk pain-free!
I don’t think walking outside is a good idea. If my knee starts to hurt on the treadmill, I get off and sit down; if my knee starts to hurt halfway through my walk, I have to walk home on it. I did wear a band on my elbow today. I didn’t notice any difference; it didn’t feel better, but then again, it didn’t hurt more either. I’ll give it more time and see. Right now I’m icing it too, just in case that will help. I’ll look into that book, Bree, thanks.
Icing should help - I have to ice my knees religiously to keep them in check. So long as I keep up with it my knees are not too bad and I can keep training. I am still going to physio therapy occasionally but I can’t afford to go very often. Only part of the cost is coverd by my health plan.
So how did your weekend go, Deb? Every time I read “RICE” on your thread, I think of the food and then shake my head at myself when I realize what is meant.
I’m sorry to hear that your knees are still causing problems. Have you ever tried other cardio machines. I have bad knees from a skiing injury and I have problems using a treadmill, but I can do the elliptical machine or a bike. Just a thought.
