AUNT Catherine - I think of “Auntie” like I think of “Cathy”.  Very few have ever gotten away with it!!  I am still battling my SIL and her family to get it right.  Her sister can be ‘Auntie’ but I am an ‘Aunt’!

Here are some pictures from yesterday

1) Dad (my brother) and his boys!

2) Aunt Catherine with Ryan.
(I’ll have to see if someone else has a better shot of me where you can actually see my face.)

3) Baby Ryan

The birth went very well yesterday with no complications. Christine only had to push twice after her water was broken and the doc was scrambling to catch the baby!! Ryan ate well and then slept through the night with little crying. Unfortunately Christine didn’t get much sleep because the woman in the next bed was having a rough time - she had to have another surgery this morning.

Matthew was very curious about his new brother and gave him some gentle kisses which was soooo adorable. He is such a daddy’s boy that as soon as he got to sit on Dad’s lap for some pictures he was all smiles. Not sure if he was excited about his brother or if he thought he was the center of attention as usual. He is going to have to learn to share the limelight now that he is not the only little one in the family.

Now that I’ve had a good night sleep I am full of energy today. I am going to clean out the trunk of my car then head to the gym for a good workout before dinner with the family to welcome Ryan home.

Plans got changed around today. First we were going to have dinner, then we decided to just see the arrival home since Ryan was supposed to be released by early afternoon and Chris didn’t get much sleep so we didn’t want to be hanging around, but then there were some problems with bleeding with Ryan’s circumcision (I’ll say OUCH for all you guys) and they didn’t get to leave until much later so we ended up going for dinner after all. (KFC - tastes good… but I know it’s not good for me… yuck!) Needless to say my workout got pushed back to this evening.

Got to the gym about 9 and did my Chest and Quads day - it felt good. I hope I just undid what dinner did to me!! I didn’t have time to do any cardio so I’ll do a bit extra tomorrow. I’m planning on Shoulders, Arms, and Legs which I find a bit easier than my other two days so I should be able to survive extra cardio after.

What a beautiful baby, Catherine! I agree with the auntie thing, its just off somehow. I had a nephew that couldn’t say Bree right, so I was “Aunt B” for a while, it was cute and annoying all at the same time.

You’re doing awesome, the KFC shouldn’t have any lasting effects. You may swell from the salt, but you’re way more gooder than badder, so no worries.

Thanks Girls!! He is doing well and his older brother has taken a liking to him which is a good sign. When I arrived to visit Matthew (22 months) took me by the hand and lead me over to show off his new baby brother. Even though Matthew is not talking yet he certainly knows how to get what he wants and gets his point across effectively (most of the time). Mind you it has been a hayday of gifts for Matthew as well as for Baby Ryan. He has gotten several books, clothes, and at least two new toy trucks. The baby just got clothes.

Yesterday was a rest day - after working out so late on Thursday I didn’t have the energy to trun around and do it again earlier the next day. Then I stayed up way to late.....

DAY 150 - Today I didn’t get up early enough to get to swim practice but I did get to the gym. I had to go to a location a bit further away home because I left it till too late and this one is open 2 hrs later. (I was busy getting ready to go on a short camping trip next week). Shoulders, Arms and Legs day - was yesterday’s plan. I’ve noticed the step-ups in my program seem to be getting easier to complete. They are still killer and for my second set I increased my speed and really got my HR up - 179!! It took a bit for me to recover after that!! I’m also seeing some increases in strength - specifically in the shoulders. Must be the swimming.

Today I had my session with my trainer and did Back & Hams as planned. He modified the program just a bit because my left knee was bothering me (I’ve neglected icing this week). So I didn’t have to do today’s sets of step-ups. But I did do the clean and presses. He tried to give me a 20 lb dumbbell, but my hands just aren’t big enough to hold the ends and it would have strained my thumbs on the overhead press so we went down to a 15 lb DB which was a different make and easier to hold. It was good workout and I came out drenched as usual.

I was going to drive right home after, but passed a Goodlife location and since I haven’t done much extra cardio in the last few days I decided to go in and do part 2 of today’s workout. Yesterday I rented 27 Dresses from iTunes and put it on my nano so I hopped on a cross ramp and did about an hour and 20 min of VLSB. I was totally spent after that. Got home had a quick shower, ate some lunch (was starving!!), then set myself up with ice packs on my knees and promptly fell asleep for 2 hours.

I do better with music - it gets me going faster - when I’m listening to podcasts I’m not as motoviated to get my HR up.

Congratulations on the arrival of your new Nephew!

That’s a real special time, and the pictures made me flash back to when my Son was born nearly three years ago.

Great move to stop on your way home and get in some moving. That’s definitely using an opportunity well. It’s an awesome habit to see the spots and fill them!

Thanks Guys!!

I wanted to see little Ryan today but ran out of time before swim practice. I was packing for my camping trip and had to get a PT session in for my knees which have been getting sore. I also have a chiro appoint first thing in the morning so I will be all patched up before I go.

Swim Practice - only 2 km total tonight (I think). I was a bit late arriving and missed the warm-up and the practice was short (ended 20 min early) so I stayed after and swam another 600 m so at least I could say I did 2 km. It was a different coach tonight and she commented that she really liked my stroke for front crawl. So while it is quite, smooth and efficient which is great for endurance I still want to work on speed. I am concentrating on accelerating through the drive of my pull and loosing up my kick to get more out of my legs.

We are leaving tomorrow for a Arrowhead Provincial Park and will be back on Friday. Still have to get my canoe on top of my car, but I have to wait for my friend to come and help with that in the morning.

Have a good week everyone - I’ll miss ya’all.

Well, you’ve certainly had your share of injuries. I hope your new nephew, Ryan, somehow makes up for all of them.

Enjoy your vacation. You’ve earned it with all your good workouts.

The camping trip was too short! I didn’t want to leave. (Packing up and setting up and taking down and putting everything away take so much time and effort it hardly seemed worth it for such a short time - but that was the window that both Jodi and I were available for.)

Activity during the trip

Tuesday July 22

Finish packing the car and getting canoe on. Long drive. Set up campsite (too much time spent figuring out how to set up my new tent.  I bought it a few years ago but this is the first time I’ve had a chance to use it and it seems I got a few wrong poles in the box so it was a bit confusing)

Midnight swim under the stars!! It felt wonderful to be out in a lake that was perfectly peaceful. (Jodi is not much of a swimmer so she stayed on the beach and I went out maybe 50 m and treaded for a bit before I silently dog paddled back to shore and snuck up on her.)

Got tucked into my sleeping bag, but didn’t get to stay there long as we were visited by two young racoons who were quite bold and didn’t seem to be afraid of me at all.  I got up 3 times before they finally gave up and moved on.  Even though we didn’t leave anything out to attract them I think we made the mistake of dumping our wash water from dinner in the firepit, but we didn’t have a fire the first night so we didn’t burn off the smell of the turkey sausage we cooked.  I wished I’d had my camera out because they looked so cute pearing out at me from the tree trunk they hid behind.  I was only about 4 feet from them and one stayed on one side and kept a close eye on me while the other kept switching sides because it wanted to get higher but the first was in the way.

Wednesday

AM - hike to the falls (~ 2 hrs)

PM - Canoe around the lake ~ 3 km, 1.5 hrs - I really noticed a difference from that last time I paddled (a few years ago). I am obviously stronger now and did not feel in the least bit tired or sore from the paddle. I let Jodi decide when she felt she needed to switch sides. I took a few pictures of some water lilies and saw a loon in the distance. They are my favourite bird. I love listening to loon calls in the evening. (Side note: When I was in Florida a few years ago in January I was very surprised at how uninteresting loons look when they have migrated south for the winter!! But they are rather beautiful when they are up here for the summer.  Watching them run across the water awkardly to take off for flight is rather amusing!)

Swim across the corner of the lake (beach 1 to beach 2 and back). Used Google earth to estimate the distance ~ 450 m

Evening - spent chatting next to the fire.  Of course rosting a few marshmallows to make smores was the eventing entertainment.  Trying not to light it on fire but get it perfectly toasted all the way aroud.

Thursday

AM - Guided hike around the smaller lake in the campground (slow pace with stops for instruction ~ 1.5 hr)

PM - Attempted to head down the river in the canoe to the falls, but a bit of Thunder forced us to cut the trip short and get back on land.  We went into town to pick up some fresh veggies and more kindling for the fire, then did a bit of window shoping.  (I was good and didn’t buy anything, but there were a really cute pair of Keen shoes that I would have liked to try on in the Outfitter store!!)

Evening - long evening around the campfire trying to stay dry during a few light rain showers.  We had much more success burning kindling so we went through a bag and a half if it that night.  It kept us nice and warm - I didn’t even change into long pants! More smores over the coals - we had perfected our technique and they turned out much better the seconed night.
I wanted to go for another late night swim, but it got too cold and even I opted to skip it. But the sky cleared and we went down to the beach and looked at the moon and stars for a while. We each saw 1 shooting star.

Friday

AM - another swim across the lake (beach 1 to beach 4) ~ 1400 m
Packing up the camp site

PM - Quick canoe around the south end of the lake - saw a deer eating some Pickerel weed
Got the canoe back on the car - a quick lifting session - it’s not exactly a small light canoe!!
A quick swim before heading back to T.O.

The weather was the best it had been all week and I did not want to leave just then...but at least I didn’t have to pack up wet items and then set them up again in the backyard to dry out when I got home.

Here are some pic I took on Wednesday afternoon’s canoe trip around the lake.  It was a bit overcast - I wish I had taken a few shots on Friday when it was sunny with just a few fluffy white clouds in the sky.

Back to the gym on Saturday - nothing exciting - Chest & Quads - everything felt good, but had to drop 10 lbs off the leg press today (200 to 190).  I was sure to ice my knees after my workout.  They have had a bit of a break this week so they feel good and I want to keep it that way!!

Finished putting equipment away and lots of laundry done today.
