Running in the heat

I’m trying to get my 5K to under 30 minutes...I find running about 3 times a week really works well for me.  I don’t have a summer gym (hey...the sidewalk is free) and I have some Ti-Bo videos and an elliptical machine for when in rains.  But suddenly I find its getting really hot!  I don’t want to take the whole summer off running (my next 5K is in September) ...does anyone have any tricks to stay cool in the summer?

Hey Khrysyne! I’m running outside too, and this southern heat could kill a person. What I’ve been doing is waiting until about half an hour before sunset. When it’s really hot, I wait until actual dark. Another trick is to wet down your hair before you take off.

What time of the day do you run?  I’m not a morning person so I like to go for my walks in the evening after the sun has gone down.  Then it is more comfortable.

I tend to go right after work...about 4:30ish.

Keep in mind I’m in canada....It’s not THAT hot by comparrison...but the sun’s not going down till about 10pm these days. cool smile

Hi Khrystyne,

I’m in Canada too, and it can get pretty darn hot up here sometimes.  I second what everyone else said: try running when the sun isn’t high in the sky.  You don’t need to wait until 10, but sometime around 8 will probably be easier than 4:30.  Alternately, you could run in the morning before the sun rises too much.

If running at those times isn’t an option, make sure you’ve got clothing that breathes (cotton isn’t that great), and keep cold water on hand.  If you can, bring one of those bags that has the water pouches, so that it’s always easily accessible (all you have to do is suck on the straw!).  Keep your head covered with a hat and don’t push yourself too much.  You might not be able to get the 30 minutes you’re used to, but think about how well you’ll be training your body for the coming of cooler weather.  (Like a person who trains at high altitude and then suddenly can do so much more back at sea level.)
