Well, I’ve been a premium member for about 2 weeks now, thanks to my wife. We’re trying to get in shape together. Most of our cardio work so far has been walking, either at a local park or on our treadmill. (about 5 miles) I just bought us a used bowflex and that is quite exciting. We both have about 50+ pounds to lose. Being that we’re both in education, the summer is a perfect time to get a good jump on a new routine. I listen to the podcasts while walking and that makes the time go quickly.

I mentioned that I’m a musician. Actually I’ve been teaching band & orchestra for about 30 years in public schools. I’m also a professional trumpet player and I’m convinced that getting healthier would help my playing. The scales haven’t moved during these first 2 weeks but I figure my body is trying to figure out what just happened.

My family medical history on my mother’s side is not a good one in terms of heart health and diabetes. That doesn’t mean that I must follow suit. Actually my father is a real inspiration as he heads toward his 81st birthday next month. He swims 3 to 4 times per week.

Anyhow, I’m very motivated to feel better and look better in my clothes. Thanks for reading.

Welcome Doug,

Good for you to start thinking about your health.

For me, I call it, living ‘intentionally’.  Sure, we live our lives each day, with purpose… but to do so with intention...with each thing we do, and eating and exercise are just a part of that.  For years, I just ate whatever, but now, I look at the consequence of everything i eat.  I look at what I do to keep my body in shape…

I use a calorie counter (http://www.fitday.com) I’m amazed how much I eat, and when I started to track everything, I tended to eat less (and healthier too).  the rule is 500 less calories each day lower than you are eating now.....that will cut 1lb a week off, and if you add in exerice (burning calories), your body will be more efficient at burning too....

It’s a lifestyle, not a diet, and working out for me is a natural now.

It’s good to hear your wife is joining with you too!

good luck.... why not join the 100 days exercise challenge ...its fun and lots of support!

Welcome again!

It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

To tri is to risk failure, not to tri is to guarantee it!

Welcome, Doug! Would your wife happen to be Kris?

Thanks Tom.

Yes Bree, Kris (aka Dr. Kris) is my wife and best friend. I’m grateful that she is including me in her endeavors to get healthier these days.

Ah, the wonderful helpful spouse. You are a lucky man. I know I have a much easier time when my hubby is on board. What have you been doing so far?

So far I’ve been walking about 5 miles per day and a Bowflex machine. Of course with all of that exercise, I’ve tried not to ruin it by putting high calorie foods into my mouth. Most days I walk at the local park but if the weather is too humid/hot I’ll go on our treadmill. Yesterday I did five push ups after each 1 mile lap and today I can feel those muscles in my shoulders and chest.......feels good.

Thanks for asking

That’s a lot of walking! Way to go! And those push-ups will do wonders for your shoulders, chest, arms, and abs. What are your goals, specifically?
