You’re lucky there, Catherine, I can’t stand the music at either gym location. But tonight was a Jazzercise night. Okay, the band practicing loudly in the church space next door during every 7pm class is getting a little old. But it was a new class. Some of the new people are becoming regulars, and we had a new crossover person from another location. New faces always make me feel energized.

We do sell water at the center for a dollar a bottle. I usually remember to bring water, except on Saturdays I’m often forgetful, and I’ve left my bottle chilling in the freezer or fridge at work too.

Well, prepared would have been better than resourceful, but I bet I don’t forget shoes anytime soon, Shawn.

Tonight, Wednesday, July 9: gym night. Warmup: 1 mile on the treadmill, 18 minutes, various speeds and slopes. A good amount of stretching, then with all the will I could muster: squats, lower back extension, rowing, hip abduct/adduct. Free weights: pec flies, delt lifts, lateral delt, bicep/tricep extensions, overhead tricep dips, a few kickbacks (the flab under the arms is almost all gone!). Then 30 minutes on the elliptical, with three 1-minute intense intervals, flat-out. I tried for a fourth but didn’t have the energy; I did keep the last five at a good clip though. Some follow up stretching in the ladies’ locker room, as the legs were pinging and I felt a bit dizzy. Ate a little more than usual tonight. HR Monitor said 511 calories burned, and I know the thing is still fritzing out as it had my HR suddenly dropping to 0 or 50 in the middle of the 130s when I hadn’t dropped the pace. I need to send it off to get serviced.

Ann,

That doesn’t sound so good, dizzy and leg tingling - not so good.  Your heart rate drops could be a defective monitor - or you could be having some irregular heart beats that the monitor is trying to recalculate, so you might want to think about getting them both checked.  Dizzy is not what you should be feeling during or after a workout, though.  I’m not a medical person, didn’t play one on TV, didn’t stay in one of those hotels that makes you smart either, but, I’m just saying!

oh - I’ve had both those feelings before - the leg pinging is actually a good thing - it means the muscles had a good workout.  But the dizzy thing - got to pay attention to that.  Take a rest - drink some fluid - let the blood get back to your head!!  I’ve had similar problems with my HR monitor.  My watch says one thing while the cardio machine I’m on (bike, elliptical etc.) says another.  I’ve even seen my watch read over 200 bpm - I think it must have been picking up more than one signal.

Thanks, you two. The HR monitor is definitely not always working… irregular heart beat or not, the fact that it often sits on zero is a clue. I have only felt lightheaded a few times—and it’s generally when I’m tired or dehydrated or not eating enough. I thought my eating was pretty balanced this week, so I think it was just not being used to the all-out exertion yet. I’m working on keeping up with my breathing through such intensity. After the rest of my water bottle (I sip throughout the weight set but can’t juggle a bottle on the elliptical) and some great stretching, I felt much better.

It’s not exactly a tingling in the legs, Jill, just tight muscles, which I have happen a lot.  I once posted here that my “quads were pinging like a hot tailpipe”—you know, when muscles have been really isolated and worked to exhaustion and the muscle feels tense.  I just didn’t need any more action. I left feeling like I’d underworked my upper body a bit, but really I need to get in gear on the core. Waist to knees needs the most attention. The fat will have to come off on its own time, but I could use more toning all over that area too.

Thursday, July 10: today I left work about 15 minutes early, so I could make darn near all of the 5:30 Jazzercise class in addition to the 7. I was getting antsy at my desk in the afternoon, so I felt like it, and my boss was fine with it. I sweated more in the first class—I was wearing my new Champion ‘skort’ (a skirt with shorts inside) and looked down at sweat running down my bare legs. For the second class I didn’t sweat as much plus I was positioned right in front of a big stand fan, which actually made me a bit chilly till I got going, as I was damp from the first one. Good workouts. Nothing much new.

Ann have you been eating your carbs? For the HR monitor try this-lick the surface of the strap before you put it on, 1-the saliva makes it stick to your body and it is a good conductor.(It also like giving yourself a cat bath! LOL )

umm… I get one of those on a regular basis.rolleyes  But when I put the HR monitor on I usually use water to help make a connection - or just wait till I start sweating.

Okay, Shawn, I can’t talk to you anymore. smile

I do moisten the strap. I’ve never actually licked it though. If I forget, I have licked my finger and moistened the contact.

I think it’s just a battery or a contact issue.

As for the carbs, I try to keep a pretty tight rein on them, but had a baked potato tonight, just in case I’m really running too close to empty. I think I’m just adjusting.

Friday, July 11: decisive rest day, especially after Dr. Goofy adjusted me and my lower back and glutes muscles are quite sore! Lots of squats and lunges this week, and I’m tired. In fact, came home and took a brief nap before it started storming. I hope I’ll be on track for tomorrow’s double class, but if it’s too much I’ll just do the one. Later tonight when it stops thundering I’ll do a nice long hot soak and then some stretching.

Saturday, July 12: 8am and 9:15am Jazzercise classes. Skipped in and out of the second one really, due to ‘desk duties’ (the regular CSR was out and I don’t know everyone from the Saturday crew, plus we had an overflow in the bathroom, fun) but I got in a good workout. Glutes are still pretty darn sore. I’m going to relax more the rest of the weekend and probably either skip the gym Sunday or just do cardio, to let my muscles unkink.

Sunday, July 13: after a relaxing afternoon at the beach, I thought I’d stay committed to an extra rest night and see whether it allows for more energy and less muscle tension as the week goes on. Marriage to a routine is only a good thing as far as the routine is what’s right, I guess.

Side note: this morning someone had copies of a photo taken about 4-5 months ago (I guess) of our little group outside the Friends Meeting. I looked at all the faces of the group, thinking with a smile about these people I’ve grown to love. Somehow in the process I didn’t even recognize that I was on the far left of the photo. I then had to wonder, is that me?, and wasn’t entirely sure until I saw that I was holding my black-and-white polka dot umbrella. I was wearing a cardigan a bit too big for me, but I totally didn’t recognize my body or my face. How strange.

Monday, July 14: 7pm Jazzercise class. Showed up with a bit of pain in my left hip; by the end of the class it felt like the same back problem as December, though not nearly as sharp. I stretched a lot, and took a hot bath tonight, and if it’s not better by tomorrow I’ll call Dr. Goofy. I just saw him Friday and was fine! I rested yesterday! What the heck is up? I could cry for this and other reasons.

Keep your chin up!!!  Do what you can.

Was Dr. Goofy able to resolve the hip issue quickly last time?  I hope it is not serious.  I was supprised when I saw Dr. A and told him about my rib that came out on a Sunday morning.  He said if I had emailed him he would have called me and arranged to go in that day.  But it resloved itself well enough that I was able to wait out the week till my next scheduled apointment.  If it bothered me more I would have gone in earlier.

Take Care

Catherine, when I first started with chiro care I was pretty much in pain and it took a while to get relief. This isn’t exactly the usual spot to feel pain, but as I did class it started to feel as though the nerve might be pinching again. Hot bath last night, and today I feel okay but cautious. I’m tempted to see him pre-emptively just to see whether I’ve jarred something. It might not hurt again till I’m in the middle of class. Frustrating but under control.

And yes, they are very good about saying, call us anytime if you need us. Though, of course, he’s stretched between two different clinics now. But still, maybe I’ll just go in. Otherwise I’m not there till Friday next week.

It was much better today, Shawn. I did stretch gently, and was a tiny bit cautious in my class tonight, but there’s only a tiny twings, not the sharp pain. What a relief. I do marvel that it can get bad so easily, as I don’t remember doing anything Monday to cause it.

Tuesday, July 15: 7pm Jazzercise class. Class #120 for the year. I got a bit daydreamy in the middle of one routine, and ended up doing the wrong moves at the wrong times. I guess I have to pay attention.
