Good stuff Ann, 1400 is pretty easy to attain, thats walking for an hour every day for average people.

Yeah, and I don’t want to be average! : ) Though today, with really tired delts and triceps, I dunno.

I’ve been paying closer attention to my heart rate. It’s really amazing to me that some days, after a longer resistance workout maybe, my HR becomes resistant, and a brisk walk on the treadmill gets a much lower result than normal. It’s why I’ve started to use an elliptical at a faster pace before ‘retiring’ to the ‘mill for the final cardio. But last night it took another jab session marching up a 9 incline for my heart rate to get way up there, despite the fact that I was sweating the entire time, and occasionally found myself on the verge of being short of breath when I was going faster.

I’ve been putting it off, but am going to load up the Couch to 5K podcast thing ("Podcasts for running") and try doing a few running intervals, probably NOT after my legs and glutes routine, but when I’m fresher. I guess I have to get over my fear of an impact injury bit by bit. Hey, I’m no longer terrified of falling off the stair climber backwards.

If you’ve been doing jazzercise then you are probably more ready than you think!!  Take it slow and listen to how you feel the next day, but I think you should go for it!!

I keep having feelings of envy for those who can run.  I would like to add it to my repitorie, but I’m not yet at the point where it would be the most beneficial cardio for me.  I need to lose considerably more so I don’t reinjure my knees and feet.

I took up running for about a year way back when I was in high school and I remember how good it felt to run up the hills! I would love to get that feeling back!  I was down to 120 lbs then!!  I doubt I’ll ever see that number on the scale again!!

Well, after today I’m not sure I’m up for it in the next few days. I was not only still sore by the time I got to class, but very tired physically. I fudged my way through class, doing the low-impact versions of most of the aerobic moves, though still trying to maintain intensity. I’d stretched well beforehand, and had done some of the 5:30 class from the back of the room behind the counter, so I guess it was ok. A band was rehearsing next door in the church’s space (they don’t sound like a church band, but I guess they might be, as they have a lot of youth outreach) so it was “battle of the music” which was giving me a headache.  At least they took a break at one point.

Glad tomorrow’s a rest day.

Ann, you definitely are not average.  The amount of moving you do is probably 10 times what an average person does.

Shawn, I think the Florida heat may be too much for me to try to run in. People look at me like I’m nuts when I still eat my lunch outside, even under the shade of a tree. (The break room has loud television and I prefer a little peace and quiet, but soon it’ll be too hot even for me.)

I plan on doing it on a treadmill, where I can also track my time and speed pretty conveniently, as well as observe my heart rate without having to watch my watch.

Ha! Maybe the average person is shaped like the old me, though. I didn’t move much at all for years. I never quite got to the point where the stairs at work winded me, but then again I probably didn’t speed up them either.

Just had a nice long hot fragrant bath. I hope I get a solid 8 hours tonight. Been waking up in the middle of the night, sometimes due to soreness, and sometimes just restless. Been cutting back on the caffeine and doing a thorough stretch before bed. Tonight I’ve taken a melatonin which usually helps.

I agree Ann, I would love to add running in, but I’m not there yet.  If you get there first… I want to hear all about it!

Saturday, June 28: Jazzercise classes at 8a and 9:15a. I was really sleepy this morning and struggled to get going, but worked up quite a sweat. Kind of disappointed that I only logged about 600 calories burned on my HR monitor, the first time I’ve remembered to wear it on a Saturday for the two classes back to back. Other women (even very fit ones) say they burn 500 calories per class. Am I just not working that hard? I feel like I’m doing everything with the expected intensity. I dunno. Despite Friday as a rest day, my muscles (particularly quads, hamstrings, and glutes) are quite tight today and after a brief rest I’m going to do some stretching, then run some errands. Gave myself the little project of creating an online slide show for a friend’s 50th birthday, and I just got finished. I added a bunch of facts about 1958 (costs of stuff, major and quirky events, inventions, celebrities born the same year, etc.) and some photos our friend has posted over the past few years of himself with friends, etc. Hard to believe Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Viggo Mortensen, Sharon Stone, Ellen Degeneres, Grand Master Flash, and more are turning fifty this year.  Puts my own age in perspective somehow.  (BTW gas was 24¢ a gallon in 1958.)

Ann 600 cals is noting to be disappointed with, 500 calories even seems a bit outrageous to me,most normal people burn about 500 calories doing very strenuous activities for an a hour, for me that is about one of my weight training sessions.

Thanks, Shawn. That 600 calories would have been for the two classes, with a fifteen minute break in between with the Polar ‘running.’ One of the other women did two classes and her Polar registered over 900 calories.

I took a break over the rest of the weekend, fell into a book, and decided to skip the gym last night due to needing some rest.

That is a legit reason to skip the gym.  Was the book good?

I think the rest and book just hit me at the right time of the month. It was another Adriana Trigiani (as I’ve discussed a bit with Nienke), the second of a trilogy, and I’d read the first one about seven years ago or so. On the surface, the protagonist (a married mom in a Virginia mining town) had little in common with me. But it hit a lot of emotional nerves—about feeling that a long adult life of independence makes it hard to truly merge one’s life with someone else’s, about needing to feel desirable, about needing to feel “chosen.” It’s called Big Cherry Holler. One of my friends picked up Milk Glass Moon, the third, to take on a trip and I thought maybe I’d read that, but the library had all three and I realized they were part of a sequence I might read in order.  I felt pretty sappy getting all emotional while reading, especially while sipping coffee in a diner. Considering I woke up this morning with the worst cramps in half a year, I suppose it wasn’t completely the fiction.

I’ve been there.  I am certainly more emotional/volitle when thatl time is approching.  I just with everyone around me understood that.

Take it easy today - go for a walk or a light workout.

Things did improve as the day goes on. I came home at lunchtime (something I seldom do) and washed exercise clothes, lying down in between tasks, so I felt better afterwards. Made it back to work JUST before a torrential downpour. I did go to Jazzercise class tonight, doing the resistance part of the 5:30 class and then the 7p class. For the most part it went well; I had a small issue with balance on one leg tonight.

Wednesday, July 2: gym night.

Officially, I.did.not.have.it tonight. I know why—I’ve been a bit worn out between not feeling 100%, the mini emotional drama going on, and not eating right. Specifically, not eating enough. I have trouble eating during that time of the month, and I think the jealousy bit shut off my hunger (you’d think it’d activate my sweet tooth, but no, stress does that) and I just logged in my calories for the past two days. Oops. Well, problem identified, problem solved.

I did 12 min of warmup on the treadmill. Okay, my HR monitor is officially on the fritz. I guess I have to dig out the manual and either figure out where to get a battery or send it off to be serviced by Polar. I was at 0 for the first 7 minutes, then 61 (there’s no way after 3.5 MPH at 5%) then 135. Then, squats. Couldn’t quite handle the 80# from last time so I backed off to 70, but did sets of 20 instead of 15. The single leg I did at 40#, but did two sets of 10 instead of one set of 15. Then, lower back extension, then rowing (faster than usual), then chest fly, then adductor. Couldn’t use the hip abductor because a young woman sat down at it and asked me to explain to her how to use it, which I gladly did. (Cool, first time that happened.) I made sure she knew about the orientation with a personal trainer as well. I headed over to free weights, and did tricep kickbacks, delt lifts, lateral delt raises, bicep-tricep curls, then pec flies on the bench. I took a page from Carlyn’s “embarrassing moments” explanation and tried my last set of pec flies one arm at a time, which really does enage the core to keep you centered. (I always brought my feet up on the bench and raised my head to have my abs semi-engaged.)

I put the weights back and noticed I felt a tiny bit lightheaded. I drank half a bottle of water, and hit the elliptical. I really didn’t think I’d make it long, but I ended up going 30 minutes pretty hard. Of course the HRM was all over the place, so I didn’t get a good calorie assessment. It says 441 calories, I think it should be at least 550 for over 1 1/2 hours work total. Oh, forgot, did the calf raise machine for the first time. Will have to check the instructional video to make sure I did it right.

I was really feeling weak after the elliptical, so no treadmill for me. I drank more water and stretched out gently in the ladies’ locker room for a bit till I felt okay. I just made a protein shake. Feeling better, and I will have a warm bath and an early night.  BTW I weighted 150.5 this morning. The first time I’ve hit 150, though it doesn’t ‘count’ till I am there or under, and not “and change” for three consecutive days. When that happens I’ll be at the 80 pound mark.  Big party when that happens. At least mentally.

Hey Ann, I have heard of this problem before,if I may suggest eating some sort of complex carb before exercising, I tend to do most of my training after dinner, so I will have a sweat potato or a piece of whole wheat bread with my dinner, it seems to help the energy levels. And if you can have your carb about an hour before.
