Improving wrist strength

Hi everyone,

I’ve been making good progress with my resistance training but have reached a point where my right wrist is holding me back with some exercises. If I am doing pushups or chinups or any other exercise which involves putting strain on the hand, it’s usually my wrist that gives out before any of the muscles I am training.

I first noticed the problem at the beginning of the year. It probably didn’t help that I was visiting my cousins in Ireland who had gotten a Wii for Christmas - it’s a killer on the wrists!

Does anyone have any exercises or tips that will help me to build up wrist-strength?

Much appreciated!
James

James, I saw in one exercise book a pictoral and description of a wrist curl as part of the upper body workout. Basically you hold a dumbbell in your hand as if you were going to do a bicep curl, but keep your forearm on your leg or a table, and just curl up the wrists. I’ve done this a few times at the gym, must look odd but since I’m on a keyboard every day, I figure it’s good to work out those muscles too.

You can also do reverse wrist curls.
