As a matter of fact, Cleda, I’m searching the Internet right now for some kind of stopwatch/interval clock like software!

Deb is getting radical!!! Yah!! Awesome job Deb. I’m so impressed with what you are doing. I am more curious to try them too now. I just found out I may be going to Montreal the middle of this month. Think Shawn would be willing let me try them out and put me through my paces?

One thing I noticed… some people are talking in pounds others are talking in kilograms - very big difference! 12 lbs sounds manageable, 12 Kg sounds much more challenging. Be careful.

Oh here Deb ... Please, let me enable you:

http://gymboss.com/boxingMartialArts.html?gclid=CNn52Jvv2pMCFSaiiQodFX78Yg

I have this and it’s great. I also have the plain clock in the room for when I’m just “practicing”. Since I tend to get quite obsessive about things, sometimes I have to leave all my technical toys behind (heart rate monitor, gym boss, etc, etc.) and just DO IT ....

But, the gym boss is awesome ....... It really is worth it’s weight in gold!!!!! I highly recommend it.

Catherine: you are VERY right ..... Kettlebells come in Kgs, pounds and the Russian term “pood” ... A pood is equal to 16kg (or 35 lbs.) Clear as mud? I have noticed that now the kettlebells are mainstreaming, people mostly talk in kgs and pounds.

That’s why I warned Deb to be careful with the 12kg kb!!!  I for one do not (and probably cannot) use 12kg for all my exercises, which is why I have a huge collection in both pounds and kgs! wink

Here’s a breakdown chart for anyone interested:

(12kg/26 lbs.)
(16kg/35 lbs.)
(20kg/44 lbs.)
(24kg/53 lbs.)
(28kg/62 lbs.)
(32kg/70 lbs.)
(36kg/79 lbs.)
(40kg/88 lbs.)
(48kg/106 lbs.)

My heaviest bells are 12 kgs and 16 kgs.  BUT .... I also have (in POUNDS): 10 lbers, 15 lbers, 20 lbers, 25 lber.
I use pairs, I use singles. I use heavy I use light.  I like to mix it up! wink

Some day I’ll get heavier ones, but for now, these serve my purpose!  (and I watch for shipping sales from companies!!!!)

I think Cleda is addicted!  tongue wink Don’t you just love healthy addictions?

Deb, you’re doing great! Can’t wait to hear if you made your trip today. Here its 92 and sunny. I think I’ll melt. The weather says partly cloudy, but those little white wisps don’t count when its this hot.

I just got back from Madeline Island; lots of fun! We got to take the car over in a ferry, very cool! Well, Bree, today it got up to 45 and I actually took my winter coat along, as it sometimes gets pretty nippy on Lake Superior, but I didn’t need it today. It was overcast (no sun - good!), and in the 40’s (not hot - also good!). A good time was had by all! I guess this is the time of the year I’m happy to be here rather than further south!

Yes, Cleda I was sort of hoping to find a freeware program that did what the gymboss does. I downloaded several candidates; I’ll see how it goes. I am being careful with my 12 K bell. From what I read, a woman just starting out with weights should start with the 8 K, those with some experience with the 12 K. I’ve been working out with my Bowflex for almost 2 years so figured I could start with the 12. I’ll have to say it’s perfect for swinging, and I’ll wait a while before I start cleans, presses, and snatches with it. I’ll be careful - promise!  smile

Brrrrrrr.  grrr I’d absolutely freeze, mid 90’s is a bit too warm, but mid 40s is crazy! Though 10 years ago I woke up on June 3rd to snow in the Black Hills, so not that crazy. (I remember the date because it was my aunt’s birthday and I was about to get married.)

When I’m done with this power 90 thing, I’m so getting my own Kettlebell!

Month 6 Day 5

30 minutes Intervals

20 minutes Kettlebells

OK, I didn’t mean to, Honest!  LOL I was going to do 10 minutes of kettlebells each day this week. Today I decided to use one of my software picks for timing the workout; I choose InstantBoss. It sounds like GymBoss, so I thought maybe it was designed to be like it. It was very simple.  (Work Minutes Box + Break Minutes Box) * Repeat Box. So I put in 1 minute work, 1 minute rest, for 10 total… So I counted the first minute 32 2-handed swings. I was pretty done in when it finally said Done! Then I checked it out, and it ended up being 10 minutes work time. So I went 20 minutes all together! Whew! That’s 320 swings today. I’m still functioning, we’ll see how I feel tomorrow! Mistake - honest!  shock Tomorrow (or the next day, if I’m too worn out for tomorrow), I’ll wear my heart rate monitor to see how much gasping I’m doing!  cheese

I totally believe June snow Bree! Here in Superior, we’ve had recorded snow every month of the year!

Whoo Hoo Deb… You’ve found a new passion.  It sounds like you are enjoying it.  The change was definetly good for you!

I’ll have to look up those timers… I might just be about to find a use for them!

Month 6 Day 9

20 minutes Kettlebells

I’ve decided that the kettlebells gives me a much better cardio workout than the treadmill, I’m just not able to walk fast enough to get my heartrate up because of my knees. So, after much deliberation, I’m going to lay off the treadmill for a while and see what happens. I forgot to wear my heartrate monitor to see where my heartrate goes, but I am panting quite heavily by the 10 minute mark. I’m arbitrarily calling 10 minutes a set, just so I can rest 3 minutes instead of 1! Today I did one set (1 minute work, 1 minute rest, repeated 5 times) of 2-handed swings and one set of one handed swings mixed in with 2-handed. I was hoping to do 3 sets today, but man, I’m pooped!  hmmm

I also used a different timer today, just to see the difference. I like it better; it has an initial delay that allows me to click and then go get ready for the first work time. This one is called Interval Timer. Instant Boss didn’t have that initial delay, and it made you click for every work and rest time, just in case you wanted to prolong it. Fun Fun!

Way to switch it up and save those knees! It definitely sounds like a cardio workout.

Month 6 Day 10

30 minutes Kettlebells

I got my 3 sets in today, whew! First 2 sets same as yesterday, third set was low-med-high 2-handed swings. I wore my heartrate monitor today. I looked at it as soon as I finished my last swing, so I figure that’s a pretty good representation of my working rate, which averaged 92%. My highest one was 159, which is 96%. My resting rate, measured after 45 seconds rest averaged 73%. Does that qualify as high intensity intervals? Whew!

Month 6 Day 11

20 minutes Kettlebells

OK, I think my kettlebell is working - every single muscle in my body hurts today!  cool grin hardcore! I was going to do my 30 minutes anyway, none of the muscles hurt THAT much; but my hands couldn’t grip after 20 minutes, I couldn’t hold onto the silly thing anymore! It’s weird, even my lats ache. Lat pulldowns were my favorite Bowflex exercise, I could pull 160 pounds with no trouble; and after a half hour of swinging a 26 pound ball, they object!?! Wow! Weird!  big surprise

I don’t know anything about the Bowflex so I don’t know how weird exactly. . . . Don’t forget that you have to give your muscles some time to recover so you’re going to have to do something different in between kettlebell sessions. How about going back to the yoga?

Month 6 Day 13

30 minutes Kettlebells

I do plan on adding my yoga back in, Joan; but for these first couple of weeks, I wanted to concentrate on the kettlebell. I’m still learning both what the bell is capable of and of what I am capable of in return. I went into this with the assumption I could swing everyday, and add the presses and snatches on M-W-F. It will take a couple of weeks to figure it all out. Today I added one clean/press L and R on each minute on the last set; just learning how the move works at this point. Yes, Derek, I am indeed having fun with this silly little cannon ball with its handle!  LOL

LOL - loved that description Deb.... I have a trip to Montreal in the works and hopefully Shawn and I can meet up so I can try my hand at the “silly little cannon ball with it’s handle”!  Think I can manage his 35 lb one???

You are doing really well!!  Keep it up!!

Month 6 Day 16

30 minutes Kettlebells

10 minutes 2-handed swings; 10 minutes 1-handed swings; and 10 minutes clean and press. I was going to go for one more set of 2-handed swings, but ran out of steam. But I think I am coming along nicely! I think I’m planning on 20 minutes on T-Th, with 40 minutes or more (eventually) on M-W-F Joan. That’s the plan anyway; who knows if it is a good one or not!  rasberry

I think you’ll be able to swing a 35 pounder Catherine - Go For It!  cool grin
