It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

The guy was on a morning workout swim with the San Diego Tri Club, which I am a member.  I have been with them, during their morning swims, on that same beach, but not that morning!

What is so amazing, is that AFTER he was attacked, the shark went away, and the other swimmers who were 20 feet or so in front of them, went BACK to help him...got him to the beach, and he was still alive… unfortunately, he bled out before an ambulance arrived.....

There are a few theories why he was selected out from the dozen other swimmers.
he was not next to another swimmer
he was a vetanaian by trade , and some have said he had been near a seal that had washed up on shore, so the scent may have been on him?? (dont know if that’s true)

Fate, I guess....

There are thousands upon thousands of people that swim open water in San Diego area..... this was such a freak attack!  I’m more likely to be killed driving the 102 miles I do to work and back each day....

He was in all the races I did last year (although a different age group- he was 66) He had won most of his age group heats! A true triathlete!

That’s crazy. I’m so thankful it wasn’t you. Did the tri club do something to comemorate such an athlete?

Hi Tom,

Can you refer a store that sells swim suits out your way? My mom lives outside of Temecula and is having a hard time find a swim suit store.

Thanks
Donna

Hi Donna,
the last ‘jammer’ I bought (made by ‘Zoot’) was at a race (tri).  they always have deals at the ‘expos’ a day before the race.... I got mine half price (off the clearance, end of the year discounted price- quite a deal...I would have bought two, but hey only only had one in my size).

There is a cool swim store off of Encinitas Blvd (in the Smart and Final shopping center, just off the 5 fwy) I cant remember the name, but it has a very nice selection.... It’s a bit away from Temecula, but if she is ever down to the beach, that would be a good one.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Tom, I googled and found it. She is participating in the senior olympics in Pasadena this weekend so she might be able to go by. So what’s next on your racing schedule?

My next race is another short ‘sprint’ tri..... it’s my ‘A’ race of the year, at Carlsbad on July 13th.... I’m going to start regular ‘interval’ training.... try to stay healthy… and beat my friend (who got me into doing these crazy races!)

Ah, its always fun to have a friend to race with. I have a friend that races and we play a little game to see how long it takes her to catch me on the bike.  Its fun and amusing.

The last tri we did, I beat my friend’s bike time by almost 2 minutes… (but he beat me on the run by 3!, and the race overall!)

Wow that is close, should be an exciting race coming up. Is he in your age group? Is it a battle for hardware?

He’s 4 years younger (i keep joking with him that i should get a handicap), so he is in an age group below me
He has a nice bike (Fuji is a GREAT bike too).  the thing is, he has been riding FOREVER!  He has done tri’s since the 1980’s.  So experience is on his side too!
