It’s important to know that at the end of the day it’s not the medals you remember.  What you remember is the process-- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands—those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish last or you’re an Olympic Champion.

To tri is to risk failure, not to tri is to guarantee it!

Hey, M. Busy as can be. Didn’t think about the knees today and played chase with the preschool kids. Oops. It was so much fun though, having 34 wee ones running after you is wonderful. They got pack mentality and surrounded me. I’m pretty sure the other teachers thought I was nuts.

Found out our septic system is misbehaving. I’m bummed about that, the problem is on my property line, and we had to have it surveyed so we knew whose issue it is this year. Last year it was our neighbor, guess we get a turn. I can think of so many more fun uses of that much money. Hubby took the day off to try to get in touch with someone about the problem, but after repeated phone calls, no return calls at all.

I’ll admit, I’m having a hard time coming to terms with knee pain. Even the elliptical causes pain. I’ve put on the weight I’d lost during the 7/7 plan I did. I’m trying to decide the best course of action from here. I’m staying active, but I’m almost afraid of working out. Any advice? Maybe I should just go back to the 7/7 plan with walking as my LSB. Then get more religious with the ice and elevation. I feel like just strength training isn’t enough.

Hi, Bree. How about swimming? It is very easy on the knees. Just don’t drown on us smile

I swim almost every weekend. The pool is an hour drive, so it’s just not a more regular option. When it heats up, the pool at the activity center closer will open.  Thanks, Derek!

Got some new workout clothes today, its tax-free weekend in Tennessee. I’m gonna do more shopping tomorrow. Yay, me!

Hi Bree

I have been a bit off my game and needed to get caught up on your thread for the week. Oh no! It sounds like the knees are acting up again. But having fun with the little kids sounds like so much fun!!

My knees are improving but they are still not 100% I am getting treatments from my chiropractor. Of course none of it is covered so it has cost me a bit of cash, but the knee treatments are cheaper than back adjustments. Micro-electro current treatments seem to be the most effective in providing relief.
I find the elliptical still bothers them a bit, but I get too bored just using the bike. So long as I stretch my quads well after they are ok. I want to get back to doing squats, but I think it will be a few weeks at least and then I will start out by limiting my range. I have no intention of trying to add jogging to my program yet. I kinda wanted to try out one of the interval programs (eg. first day to 5 K) I have downloaded, but I may have to wait a while for that.

Rest them for now, and then try adding stuff back to your program slowly.

Enjoy your week

Sorry to hear the knee is bothering you Bree, maybe something low impact like an exercise bike?

Hey Bree...don’t give up on it...the knee will get better...may take some time...but it will heal.  Just got to find inventive ways around the issue.  Shawn made a good point for the bike, another might be a rowing machine, something where all your weight isn’t bearing down on the knee...will help alot...and both are good workouts.

sorry I have been absent...keep up the good work out and don’t lose faith.

Well, I went swimming yesterday. It was great to get my HR up again. I did 600m, checked the HR once (jumped out of the pool to use the watch) and it was at 80%, I’m gonna check into the Activity Center that’s only a 30-40 minute drive. I’m miffed about the knee, but I’ve been working hard on my attitude. Gonna do mostly pilates and yoga for a while. And tomorrow Jenn’s coming over for some fun Yoga Booty Ballet!

I’m also back to really watching what I eat. Already dropped 2 of the 5 gained pounds. No more “well, if I can’t run, I’m gonna sit home and eat ice cream” attitude for me!

Went to the doctor today. I rested it yesterday, and today the darn thing hurt despite aleve and ibuprofen. 2 hours and 2 x-rays later, no answers. I do know that the problem is not bone related, the x-rays looked really good. So I have a prescription for massive amounts of ibuprofen (Walgreen’s computers were down, so I will have to pick that up later) and told not to do any running. He said the elliptical would be fine, but then changed that when he asked if that caused pain and I said yes. So yoga, and upper body weights. As much stretching as I want, too! I go back in 2 weeks.

So basically what I figured with some pain killers. And a bill. But when I hurt that bad at school this morning, I had to go.

Jenn’s doing yoga with me in just a bit, so that’ll help.

I guess its focus on the diet for a couple of weeks. And lots of yoga will help with stress.

Yoga Booty Ballet, Cardio Caberet, well modified to fit the knee issues. Just got my prescription filled and took the massive ibuprofen, so in a bit I should feel really good.

Tomorrow Jenn and I are doing Windsor Pilates. Going for the perfect core!

Accelerated Pilates today. Wow, its been a while since I did that. Felt good (better when we were done), I could do a lot more than I thought I’d be able to do. Jenn kicked butt too.

Knee’s feeling better today, but I’m sure the 1800 mg of ibuprofen I’ve had today have something to do with that.

Tomorrow we’re doing YBB - Latin flavor! I’m feeling sassy already!

Bree, consider a chiropractor and/or physical therapy if the knee doesn’t get better. Years ago I thought chiropractors were quacks but no more. The meds can reduce swelling (along with ice) and kill pain but if there are other issues, they won’t actually fix anything. (And I’m the one with a pharmacist husband and an MD sister.)

I agree with Joan - a chiropractor may be able to help you. A sport/physical therapist is likely a better bet. I think you have to find the right professional to deal with the issue and sometimes it may take a few tries. You really have to be your own advocate. I have had issues with a chiropractor in the past and didn’t have a good opinion of them either. When I hurt my back again moving last summer and it was still bothing me in the fall I knew it was a joint problem (lumber vertebrae) this time and opted to try one again. It really has helped, but I still think they should stick to their speciality (bones and joints) and not try to branch out into other areas (orthodics, teeth bleaching...I really don’t get that one from my chiro! leave that to the cosmetic dentists) unless they really have the educational background to be qualified in that field.

Several years ago when I was at doing my undergrad at university I was starting to have some real problems with my feet. The joint in my big toes were really sore and inflamed and I was starting to walk on the outsides of my feet to avoid those joints. I knew if I didn’t take care of them I’d be in real trouble. At first I went to the chiropractor on campus because he had a sign that advertised gait analysis. When I went in for the consultation I told him my complaints, but he didn’t even have me take off my shoes or examine how I walked. He said he had this computerised scanner that would analyze my foot, but he only had it on Tuesdays afternoons. I didn’t think that by walking 3 steps and landing once on the pad (repeated 3 times each foot) could really capture and understand my problem. What the Dr. said to me after really made me suspicious. He said maybe he’d make me a modified golf othotic with cut out for the toes, but he’d have to pick the brain of the guy who loaned him the machine!! I waited to hear back from him, but when he didn’t call I called his office and told them to take a flying leap. I went to a guy who makes prosthetics for a living and also teaches at the college. His were the best othotics I’ve had, but I don’t live in that city any more. I am tempted to make the trip because any othotics I’ve had since (from chiropractors) do not seem to do the job. I saw part of a news report last week that totally confirmed my suspicions - it is totally a sham by chiro’s - they are just out for the money and prescribe othotics to anyone they can. Ok enough ranting.

Take care of the knees.
