I have been walking several times this week, but I just joined MTM and made the commitment to do the challenge today. I have a sedentary job but have been making the time to walk 30 minutes to the post office to pick up the mail with a coworker. It feels great! I am also looking forward to breaking out my Pilates dvds again too. I will definitely need accountability!
Welcome Lisa! Walking to the p.o. is a great idea! I work about 6 blocks from mine and could probably get there and back during my planning time (that’s the time I have no children in my classroom.) Thanks for sharing that ‘cause I’m stopping by there every day to check my box on the way home anyway. With your method there’s the fresh air, the exercise, the daylight I never see . . . And do you enjoy the time to visit with your coworker?
I haven’t been able to get to a computer for a while but am still walking and/or doing Pilates. I made the mistake of doing Pilates right before I went to bed last night at 10 pm and then couldn’t get to sleep. I have to get up at 2 am to go to work, so that really threw me off!!! Hope I can make it through my day!
2:00 a.m.! Arrrgh! What a schedule… That’s gotta be hard to work in an exercise period, so the regular walks to the P.O. are a great idea.
I used to work a job where I started work at 3:30 p.m. and got off work at midnight, home by about 1 a.m. I had a tough time with that one and only lasted about a month! I don’t think I would have your dedication!
Awesome about the PO box. Are there also stairs in your office building? In one of the schools I work in, the classroom is up on the 7th floor. I couldn’t make it all the way at first, but I just walked as far as I could go, then took the lift the rest of the way.
Yesterday was a day to learn to be flexible. I left work late and ran to the gym only to find that the lock fell off my bag. I went to KMart next door and bought a new lock. My daily goal is 45 minutes of cardio per day and I now had only 38 minutes for cardio before my training appointment. I was working with my son’s youth group last night so I had to leave after training.
I increased the intensity a little bit to compensate for the reduced amount of time, got off my treadmill leaving me 30 seconds before my appointment with my trainer. Wouldn’t you know it...the lock was jammed with my training log insode the locker. I frantically found someone at the front desk who was able to cut oof my lock, threw mys stuff in the car and started training 8 minutes into our session. So 22 minutes of legs resistance training was all I got.
At the end of the day I had to smile and think that a year ago I had trouble getting myself off the couch. Today I treasure the moments I have to move, feeling every cell in my body come alive. What a difference focus and momentum can make!
I tried something new today for cardio. I spent 50 minutes on the treadmill doing intervals. I am amazed at what a difference it made1! I was really tired at the end and VERY hungry. Cardio only days are really hard for me because I enjoy the challenge of weights and working with my trainer who has a great personality. But intervals were really fun to do.
I spent another 45 minutes on the treadmill today… it seems to go by so quickly! I used to think 30 minutes sounded like a lot of time! I found myself wishing that I could lift weights today, but I’ll have to wait for that until tomorrow.
I have noticed that I am REALLY hungry lately. I have been tracking my food lately and should be fine calorie wise, but I am still hungry. Any suggestions?
Lisa - sounds like you’re doing great! I too look forward to hearing wisdom about what to do about feeling hungry. I don’t want to eat back everything I’ve just burned. If you figure it out, pass it along! How great too that your workout time is passing so quickly. What a rush!
Didn’t get a chance to post the last dew days, so here it goes:
Last Friday was a horrific day at work. I got angrier than I have been in years and decided to put the emotion on hold until I hit the gym. My trainer noticed my frustration right off the bat and decided to put it to good use...this guy is good. So an hour later my sore back shoulders and triceps paid the price for the struggles I had at work in a positive way...and I was smiling.
I then did 45 minutes in the tread mill and called it a day. I took Saturday and Sunday off and look forward to cardio and weights again with my trainer later today.
I did buy a stability ball over the weekend. I would like to spend some time stretching and doing abs on it at home.
I am stressing a little over an upcoming trip for ten days. I am going with my son’s youth group to California to work on low income housing. I had an irrational nightmare that I put on 200 pounds on this trip. In my dream, when I returned, my trainer threw up his hands in disgust and fired me as a client!
When I told him about it, he just laughed, reassured me that I wouldn’t totally fall apart in 10 days while doing hard physical labor 12 hours per day and promised to come up with some exercises I can do with resistance bands and my own body weight.
What a nightmare. It reminds me of the Harry Potter scene where he ‘blows up’ his aunt. buttons popping open, seams ripping . . . (sorry, the image was enough to make me laugh)
I agree with your trainer. Your physical conditioning should help you with the work you’re going to be doing. You can just give the jobs you will be doing a name like hammer curls, lumber lifts, etc. Next thing you have construcaerobics. That should be enough of a workout to maintain you for just 10 days. If anything, if you work hard enough, you may get stronger while you’re gone.
I had another unpleasant day at work today. But every time an unpleasant situation would arise, I would envision my hands wrapped around weights working out the frustration in the gym. When coworkers turned negative I imagined my trainer Mike smiling and making the last few reps doable with his wit and personality ( and sometimes his physical help). I imagined turning up the treadmill as high as my legs would allow and sprinting like I did in high school and college on track teams. And at the end of a work day that began at 3:30 am I got to do all the things I imagined--back and biceps with Mike and 45 minutes on the treadmill.
Today was the first day of training with Mike that he actually has to tell me to stop before I thought I needed to. He kept increasing the weight and I kept going to 20 reps. I am going to be sore tomorrow!
I then hopped on the treadmill. For the first 20 minutes I did a simulated hike on a mountain trail. Then for the last 25 minutes, I did intervals--2 minutes walking at 4.0 mph and 1 minute running at 7.0 mph. In my mind, I can still run the 100 yd dash in 11.9 sec!
All this to say I took the time to ask myself at work how I wanted to feel and what I wanted was to feel phenomenal...and right now, in this moment, that is exactly how I feel!
Didn’t have time to post last night but I did 45 minutes on the treadmill. I always feel like something is missing on cardio only day… I love lifting weights! Will be back on the treadmill later tonight.
I meet with Mike 3 day per week. I would do 4 if I could fit it in the budget. He does give me great advice for eating and he is really good about keeping my whole story in mind. For instance, when I first started working out with him, I told him that I did a bodybuilding contest 13 years ago and wanted to make sure that I DON’T find myself in a gym 5 hour a say any more. When I start to ask about adding things on, he reminds me that I am heading down that path again.
He knows a LOT about nutrition for which I am grateful. I have been amazed at just how hungry I get now even though I eat every 2-3 hours and track everthing I eat to make sure I am eating enough and in proper proportion. We’ve talked about the fact that I may need to add a few hundred calories per day if we keep this pace up.
