Well, my “Buns of Steel” turned to “Buns of Marshmallow"… LOL

I’ve recently been downsized out of a job, and since I’ve packed on more than just a couple of pounds in the last couple of years, I figured I would make productive use of the downtime.  I joined Brooks Health in Orange City, and have been putting in an average of three or more hours a day between weights, water classes, walking, etc.  and I’ve cleaned up my diet (significantly!!).  So far, in the past month I’ve been doing this, I’ve cheerfully said goodbye to 8 pounds and 2.5% body fat.

So, here I am… and I’m ready to rock!!  Let’s make like a Nike ad and “JUST DO IT!!”

Welcome to the challenge! You have a great start already and it sounds like you are ready and raring to go to lose the rest and get that awesome booty back.

Have fun with it!

What an awesome attitude!!  You’ll do terrific.

What are some of your goals?  You’re already on the right path, but where do you want it to lead?

Good Morning!

Wow, thanks for the welcome!  To look at me now, you’d NEVER know I used to be an athlete… I was an amateur figure skater as recently as 2003.  My goal is to remove 58 pounds (68 would make me absolutely ecstatic… ) I don’t call it “weight loss” but “weight removal”.  To say you’ve lost something, like your car keys, for example, implies that you’re going to go looking for it so you can get it back.  I don’t want the pounds back…

Truth be told, I’m contemplating going back to school to become… a personal trainer.  I’m checking out the school on Tuesday.

I shake up my workouts between the conventional weight and resistance machines, pool classes (which have been a great mix of resistance with the pool weights and cardio) and walking.  I’m looking into a Zumba class today, and I’m starting Couch to 5K this week as well.  I’m planning to take up yoga as well.  Hey, I’ve got the time, so why not use it?

Well, gotta get dressed and out the door… I’m on my way to the fitness center!

Welcome Lori!

First of all, I LOVE the signature!  Switchfoot is a great band!  (they are the sons of our pastor at our church, and we get ‘free mini concerts” from time to time-so cool)

Thanks for sharing about your life, and your goals.  You sound like you had a ‘click’ and that from your previous healthy lifestyle, you already KNOW how to become more fit, thus ‘removing’ the weight will not be a walk in the park, but easier.

For me, it comes down to ‘living intentionally”, with everything we do.  I think we all KNOW when we are doing things that that will lead to unhealthy results. With our weight, it’s a matter of calories in- calories out.  By eating less (and what we eat matters too!) the weight just naturally goes. It’s getting into the mindset of what matters. If being slightly overweight, and carrying around and ‘extra’ 10 lbs doesn’t bother you, then it’s okay. If your 50-60 lbs over your bodies weight, it effects your stamina, your organs, and even self esteem, with can have many more phycological effects.

Glad your aboard!  If I had any advise (did you ask for any? lol) it would be to KNOW what your eat, total calorie intake everyday.  Then just find a way to cut out 500 calories.  I use http://www.fitday.com to track my food, and keeps me honest. It also has a weight goal feature, with a graph that you can watch the ‘removal’ happen over time!

Most of all, enjoy the journey!

Hi Tom!

Actually, the signature comes from an old song by Timbuk 3!  I’ve never heard of Switchfoot.

Actually, I do use FitDay… I am so-o-o-o aware of every little thing that goes into my mouth.  That’s why I love sugarless gum.  There are times when I’m not really hungry, I just want something to chew on… and it fits the bill.  I drink obscene amounts of water and green tea.  Very rarely do I have a soda anymore (this coming from a recovering Coke Classic addict… they need a 12-step program for that stuff...) If I do, it’s diet.  I have several kinds on hand, but I only put them in the fridge one at a time, so I can’t just go in and grab a cold one whenever, and I don’t like pouring them over ice because the ice melts too fast and dilutes it.  Another favorite is Wal-Mart’s Clear American key lime sparkling water… YUM!  I log all my activity, everything.  I was doing this even before I started using FitDay.  I used to have everything in Excel spreadsheets.

As for today’s workout… I walked for an hour, did 55 minutes with the machines and free weights (it was wonderful… I got there early, and I was the only one in there until I hit the last machine!!), jogged the pool for 30 minutes and took a pool class.  If I get a burst of energy/ambition later on, I may do some stretching or work with my resistance bands.  I’ll probably take a short 30 minute walk after dinner.  That’s it for me for today!

Tom -

That’s so funny… I’m SO all about spreadsheets and databases… LOL  I’ll track my workouts and what I eat till the end of time, but I absolutely LOATHE journaling.  I won’t do it unless I’m stuck in a rut and the scale won’t move.  Then I’ll do it for a brief time to see if I can spot psychological trends.  I had everything under the sun in a spreadsheet… inches lost, pounds, body fat %… and lucky me, I have one of those scales that insults you to the 1/10th of a pound… LOL

But in all seriousness, just in the month I’ve been getting back with the program, I’ve noticed so many changes in me already… I’m not as tired and worn out at the end of the day, I have more stamina, and can spend MUCH more time walking without lower back pain and stand for longer periods as well.  I was swaybacked when I was only 95 pounds, so at my current weight, the additional weight has really put stress on my lower back, making it yell at me a lot!  The pool work has helped quite a bit for that, along with working my core.  It’ll all happen when it happens, and I know that as long as I stay the course, everything will be A-OK in no time.

Sunday is technically my “slacker” day, but I’ll get a 30-45 minute walk in first thing in the AM before it gets too warm.

Thanks for the motivation… I knew this was the place to come, because Scott is a great motivator and cheerleader… and from what I can see, there’s a lot of cheerleaders and motivators here on the forum too.

Have an awesome weekend… and I’ll make it a point to check out Switchfoot.

Day 2 - and Sunday is my “slacker” day!

I DID go out and take a nice 40 minute walk… getting ready to eat dinner now, I might try to sneak in another after dinner.

Day 3 - glad I went out and did something on my “slacker” day… because I’ve done nothing today.  Stomach has been super crampy all day long… felling better tonite, but not feeling up to pushing my luck.  I’ll let everything settle tonite and get back to doing what I need to do tomorrow.  Eating has been on plan all day, and so has my water consumption (and I’m never lacking for green tea either!).  Two outta three, considering how I feel, ain’t bad!

Lori,
I’m a few days late to welcome you to the forum.  I saw a post from you in another thread that said you will be 49 in August.  I am a month ahead of you, I will be 49 in July.

Sounds like have jumped right in and have a great attitude.  I love your ‘weight removal’ phrase.  I may just borrow that.

Good luck on your goals - with fitness and with life.
