So I’m running along on the treadmill today at the gym at work and I have the whole place to myself.  Then a senior VP comes wandering in stops beside my treadmill and just looks at me.  Once I finish fumbling around with my ipod to turn it off and not fall off the treadmill he says:I see that you’ve started running, good for you.  At this point I’m just thinking, I’m at the total other end of the corporate food chain, you even know who I am?  Then he says, “I’m also a trainer at the Running Room, If you ever have any questions or need any help I’ll be glad to help you.” (At this point I’m just going...Ummmmmmmmm) Then i mentioned I was thinking about trying my hand (or feet) at a 5K but all the ones I’ve seen were on Sundays and I wasn’t free.  So he says I’ll be right back.  A few minutes later he comes back with 2 5K’s written on a piece of paper, both on Saturdays and says I’ll see you there!

So I guess I’m running in a 5K!?!

Its funny, the day before my friend asked me to try a 10K walk/run with her, but I’m leaving for Halifax the day before.  Seems the universe is trying to tell me something!  Who am I to question?

Road races are tons of fun and a great way to keep you motivated to train. When you do yours please post a race report so we can share your success.

I guess you are doing a 5K! Can’t wait to hear how it goes. What’s your current distance?

thats kinda my problem...I can go 40 minutes, but its at a slow (but steady) trot.  Because I run on a track and can’t seem to remember to count how many laps I do, I really don’t know how far I’m going.

I’ve seen some people use lap counters like these:

I count with my fingers and yeah, it looks kind of goofy but everytime I change my fingers.

Its so true Julie!

I got myself a pedometer this weekend, going to the gym after work and we’ll see how far I’m going now.

It would be fantastic to have a gym at work. And, wow, if a senior VP noticed you making progress, and fitness is seen as a company virtue, then one can see what Scott meant about getting fit affecting your wallet! smile

Sounds like the situation is a great opportunity. You don’t have to break any records, you know. can’t wait to hear how it goes!—Ann

So i hit the gym yesterday and ran 5K (actaully 18 laps around my track, which should be 3 miles, counting on my fingers with Donna’s technique and my new distance pedometer said it was only 4.19K, think I need to remeasure my stride) Anyways. it took 47 minutes.  So i can totally do this!

It weird...less then a year ago I started the couch to 5K program, and i was sucking wind pretty hard at 1 minute intervals.  Now a year later, I wasn’t even watching my watch for how long I had been running, just pushing for that 5K mark!

Just keep moving...hmmmm...seems to work smile

I did it!

38 minutes...9 minutes faster then when I started and my best time by 2 minutes!

I had a blast!  In fact I came to the end sooner then I though I would.  I thought I still had another loop to go, but I turened around the last corner and there was the finish line!  I was able to sprint to the end with everything I had and passed 4 people!

Already signed up for another 5K in Sept!

Hi, Khrystyne!  You are inspiring me. I just downloaded the “Podcasts for Running” and Friday afternoon (at my desk) I listened to the first one. I thought, hmm, music is kind of pleasant, and the run time isn’t THAT long, maybe I can do this! I’m going to load up the first one on the iPod and give it a try for my next cardio session at the gym (probably Weds, unless I sneak in a visit before then.)

Congrats on your success and for being so positive about your progress! smile
